USCGC Westwind Reunion

(L-R) Jim Glines, Bob Malaspina, Harry Wilde, Ron Rosenberg, Dick Brancato, Tom Davis, and Dave Schlitz served aboard the USCGC Westwind in the early 60s when the cutter was homeported in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Training Center Cape May hosted eight USCGC Westwind (WACB-21) veterans Sept. 24, 2010.

The group met at 10 a.m., in the Ida Lewis Auditorium to watch a short video about recruit training and an organizational video summarizing our current roles and missions under the Department of Homeland Security. All the Westwind veterans attended boot camp in the late 1950s or early 1960s and were impressed with the current training program. In the audience a few joked about the M1 rifles that our recruits still use to conduct manual of arms drills and a few vets shared stories about running around the training center with their pieces as a form of punishment.

After a tour of the regiment and a walk around the waterfront the day ended with lunch in the galley. The vets shared stories about their time in the galley mess and their stories ranged from making horrible coffee to serving their company chief lobster at a poker game.

At the end of the day, the stroll through memory lane brought back a bunch of smiles and laughs.

September 11^th 2001. We can all remember where we were that day. Whether we were at home, at school, or at work. This country stopped. Horrified and grieving as we struggled to comprehend the tragic images pouring into our televisions. We watched as the brave souls redirected one of the four hijacked aircrafts. They knew that if they did not act fast then many of their fellow Americans would be in danger. How could we ever forget the phrase “lets roll”. We watched as brave men and women gave their lives standing fast to their duties amidst chaos. We watched civilians and firemen, police and military personnel as they acted with courage and such fortitude. Before September 11^th we were just a huge melting pot with many different beliefs and backgrounds, but after 9/11 we were changed. All of a sudden our differences no longer existed. We became “one”. We watched as Americans everywhere raised their flags. From the ashes of ground zero to every doorstep in America, we stood together beneath our colors, with our heads held high and as proud as we ever were. This morning we stand before you, as one battalion beneath the same flag, proudly training to fulfill our duties as America’s rising Guardians. We stand before you to say we have not forgotten those who perished on September 11th and the families who endured so much pain. We train so we may honor and live up to the legacy of those who gave their lives. We train so that Americans can trust that we are Semper Paratus, Always Ready. In our hearts we know this generation like the ones before, will continue to stand up to defend and serve this nation we so dearly love.

Friends and Family, Today was a great day as I presided over the graduation of Juliett-183. It was bittersweet for me, as it is my final graduation before my change of command next week and reassignment to Coast Guard Headquarters. The company rewarded me with their own challenge coin, and I will cherish it always. I talked at graduation about the challenges ahead for these newest Guardians and our Coast Guard. We're sending ships, aircraft and people from all over the Coast Guard to the Gulf of Mexico to help contain and cleanup the environment. Our Coast Guard is part of a crew of more than 31,000 men and women from around the government, the region, various industries and volunteers all working to make the situation better. The training center screened Rescue Men, the story of the Pea Island Surfmen, March 10, 2010 during an all-hands event. Please read the story below to learn more about our unique organization and our heroes that faced tremendous challenges during the late eighteen hundreds.

A special thanks to our guest speaker, retired Chief Warrant Officer Frank Hester, a Pea Island crewmember descendant, for sharing his story with us.

The U.S. Life-Saving Service was formed in 1871 to assure the safe passage of Americans and International shipping and to save lives and salvage cargo. Station 17 located on the desolate beaches of Pea Island, North Carolina and manned by a crew of seven, bore the brunt of this dangerous but vital duty.

A former slave and Civil War veteran, Richard Etheridge, the only black man to lead a lifesaving crew - was its captain. He recruited and trained a crew of African Americans to man Station 17. Benjamin Bowser, Louis Wescott, William Irving, George Pruden, Maxie Berry and Herbert Collins made up part of this team and formed the only all-black station in the Nation. Although civilian attitudes towards Etheridge and his men ranged from curiosity to outrage, they figured among the most courageous surfmen in the service, performing many daring rescues from 1880 to the closing of the station in 1947. The Pea Island crew saved scores of men, women and children, who, under other circumstances would have been considered the hands of those reaching out to help them, to be of the wrong race.

In 1896, when the three-masted schooner E.S. Newman breached during a hurricane, Etheridge and his men accomplished one of the most daring rescues in the annals of the Life-Saving Service. The violent conditions had rendered their equipment useless. Undaunted, the surfmen swam out to the wreck, making nine trips in all and saving the entire crew. This incredible feat went unrecognized until 1996, when the Coast Guard posthumously awarded the crew the Gold Life-Saving Medal.

“Serving” the Families of New Guardians

A few years ago, I remember driving to South Carolina from northern New Jersey to attend my son’s graduation from Marine Corps Basic Training: Driving twelve straight hours, arriving in a strange town, not knowing anyone, and feeling quite lost.

Well, I guess I wasn’t the only person to have this experience. Two years ago the Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Training Center (TRACEN) Cape May, Rear Admiral Lower Half Cari Thomas came up with the idea to make the Coast Guard recruit graduation ceremony more enjoyable for attending families and friends by providing a nice breakfast in a comfortable atmosphere prior to the event.

With the help of the Moral and Welfare staff (MWR), the Public Affairs Officer, Mission Support staff, Auxillarists Bruce Long, DCAPT (E) and Judy Dempsey, FSO-PS (FL82), a plan was created.

Once arriving at TRACEN, Auxiliarist provide transportation to the Harborview Club for breakfast. During the ride, Auxiliary members indicate the base’s various points of interest and answer questions. Upon their arrival at the Harbor View Club, family and guests are greeted by a senior Auxiliarist who welcomes them inside.

Then the real hospitality begins. Auxiliarist serve everyone with smiles and warmth, often with a dash of laughter; all included with the meal at no extra charge! Not only is the feeling of fellowship advantageous to the guests, but so contagious that many other Auxiliarist want to be part of this weekly function. Imagine that - too many volunteers!

In addition to the goodwill created by what we call “The Breakfast Club,” the modest fee charged for the breakfast helps maintain the Harborview Club and also generates money for the Coast Guard MWR fund.

All this would not be possible without the civilians and Guardians working the kitchen, the Coast Guard provides facilities and vehicles, and the Auxilitary provides dedicated volunteers from Flotillas 82, 83, and 86.

Rear Adm. Tim Sullivan, Commander, Force Readiness Command, provided members of training center Cape May an overview of FORECOM’s Business Plan and the Coast Guard’s modernization efforts during an all hands meeting Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010 in the training center’s gymnasium.

FORCECOM is the Coast Guard's first command solely responsible for preparing forces to perform missions and execute them properly. It was stood up as a component of the Coast Guard's Pacific Area on June 1, 2009.

FORCECOM is charged with the current and future readiness of the Coast Guard's workforce -- Active Duty, Reserve, Auxiliary, Civilian and Contractor -- to ensure they will be ready when called to execute their missions.

Happy 234th Birthday to the U.S. Marine Corps! - by Capt. Cari B. Thomas

I know that you all heard about last week’s tragic collision between a Coast Guard C-130 aircraft and a Marine Corps helicopter. Nine souls were lost… seven Guardians and two Marines. The C-130 crew was on a search and rescue mission, looking for a 12’ skiff lost off of Catalina Island in Southern California. The helicopter crew was on a training mission. Please keep the families and shipmates of these men and women in your prayers.

The Coast Guard and the Marine Corps have a long history and a strong relationship, in both time of war and at peace, in both good times and ones that challenge us, at home and abroad.
Since 1775, the Marines have proudly served our country. In 1797, Congress authorized the Revenue cutters to carry, in addition to their regular crew, up to "30 marines." Congress directed the cutters to interdict French privateers operating off the coast during the Quasi-War with France and thought the additional firepower of 30 marines would be needed by the under-manned and under-gunned cutters.

As the two smallest services, the Marines and Coast Guard share a unique bond. We help one another, in both war and peace. Our only Congressional Medal of Honor winner, Douglas Munro, died in the line of duty. In 1942 at the age of 22 as an E-6, he led a convoy of five boats to evacuate 500 Marines from Guadalcanal. His last words were, “Did they get off?” He died without knowing that his mission was a success.

I personally have served with Marines at several points in my career. In the mass Cuban exodus of 1994, Marines embarked on my ship helped the safety and security of the hundreds of migrants who crossed my deck.

At a joint command in Key West, I worked with Marines and all the various services in the counterdrug mission… using Department of Defense platforms to conduct detection and monitoring operations and embarking the Coast Guard to then do interdiction and apprehension.
At the Naval War College, two of my closest friends were Marines. One, a communications specialist and one an infantry man. Both began their careers as enlisted members of the Marines and both are in command positions now.

But probably the most influential Marine in my life was my Dad.

On the Marine Corps symbol are the Eagle, the Globe and the Anchor. My Dad was each of these to me. He gave me the confidence and drive to spread my own wings and serve my country. He helped show me new places and new things including the sea which is how I ended up in the Coast Guard eventually. And, he was my anchor. Anchors are used to help steady ships and hold them in place from danger in the roughest of seas and that is what he was for me.
These principles he learned from being a Marine. He served in Korea. He was killed in a car accident now almost 20 years ago and I still miss him. But I know he lives on through me and the things that he taught me. I am Semper Fi because of him.

Eight Weeks for Eight Years

Today, 11 September 2009, 41 men and women became India-182 Company. In the over 60 years that we have been training recruits, there will be only one India-182. Although this process occurs each week, today’s formation is meaningful to remember the tragedy of 11 September 2001. These recruits… the enlisted leaders of tomorrow… will give eight weeks to remember the last eight years.

The Company Commander Creed

“These recruits are entrusted to my care. I will train them to the best of my ability. I will develop them into smartly disciplined, physically fit, basically trained Coast Guard men and women. I will demand of them, and demonstrate by my own example, the highest standards of personal conduct, morality, and professional skill."

Because of the special role, incredible responsibility and complete trust and confidence placed on the company commanders, we require them to reaffirm their Company Commander Creed in front of their recruit company. Much like the oath of office that recruits take, this ceremony is intended to reinforce the gravity of the duties of the Company Commanders. Like a boat coxswain, an aircraft commander, or a patrol boat Officer in Charge, our Coast Guard places full accountability and authority with the lives and welfare of those that we serve… in this case, our recruits.

Why We Serve

Alexander Hamilton, who conceived of the Revenue Cutter service in the 1700s, said this: “There is a certain enthusiasm in liberty, that makes human nature rise above itself, in acts of bravery and heroism.”

And so, eight years ago as a country with great liberty, we watched or did things in acts of bravery and heroism. Helping people home via boats. Closing the ports to help prevent further damage. Ministering to the sick and the dying. That day…in which ordinary people did extraordinary things… changed us. We’re more aware of the things around us. We’re more tolerant of tighter security. We’re more motivated to serve.

What the Future Holds

These men and women who graduated today, and the men and women that began their Coast Guard careers today are the products of that day eight years ago. We take time today to not only remember those who lost their lives in 2001, but we honor those who answered the call to serve in 2009.

78 Guardians graduated today from Bravo-182. Just a few short weeks ago, their Company Commanders restated the creed and took on the duties of the transformation of these men and women from civilians into Guardians.

As they left for their first duty stations, they are motivated and dedicated to serving their Coast Guard and their country. Bravo Company did well in their voyage through recruit training displaying commitment, courage and character. They showed true commitment to improving themselves and one another… the beginning of a lifelong obligation to continual change and improvement.

They displayed extraordinary courage; the courage to rise above their peers in pursuit of a greater good, the courage to serve as a member of the military during time of war.

And, they have begun to understand the importance of character. As Guardians, our public expects us to be always ready and to do things always right. In order to be trusted, you must always be doing the right things, even when no one is looking.

In the Guardian Ethos it says that for the maritime public that we serve, we will protect, defend and save them. But for recruits, graduates and Guardians in the field… Not only does this apply to the public, but it applies to one another. We must protect, defend and save our shipmates. We must be their shield.

We remember to honor those who have fallen, and in the words of General Colin Powell, "You can be sure that the American spirit will prevail over this tragedy."

You are the American spirit that he talked about.

You are now extraordinary men and women about to do extraordinary things.

So the “circle of life” goes on. Another company forms, and more arrive next Tuesday. Our nation is full of young men and women who want only to save lives, make their communities secure and to clean up and preserve the environment. Our future is full of people who want to give eight weeks to honor the last eight years.

Cape May's 400th Anniversary

Shipmates,

Friday, August 28th. Fair and hot weather. The wind at south-southwest.

This isn’t the weather from the local forecast.

It is an excerpt from a mariner’s journal. On Friday, August 28th 1609, Henry Hudson’s voyage aboard the Half Moon brought him from the Netherlands and England to the east coast of the New World. He explored the Delaware Bay and the Cape May Peninsula, describing the voyage with widely varying water depths, a good tide and many islands and shoals.

This event, some 400 years ago today, is thought to be the discovery of Cape May.

We were joined today by representatives from the Netherlands and our local community who are all celebrating this event. As the battalion passed in review, one of the visitors from the Netherlands wept. When asked why she was crying, she replied that these were the children of those who liberated us. World War II is obviously still close in the minds of our friends across the pond.

We're just honored to continue to serve.

Another 81 Guardians today from Zulu 181. They were proud, happy and a little sweaty by the end. I know they'll do well in the field.
