My son is having all four wisdom teeth removed, not sure when, but before the end of boot camp. From what we were told it is common, they take about 5 recruits a day (that need them extracted) for a week, they spend the night in the infirmary and are back to training the next day. We are hoping this does not cause any problems and that he bounces back quick. Waiting to make the flight arrangements until we hear it has been done, just in case....

Love Mom, Dad and Ben

CG Fergie,
Oh so jealous of your phone call, wish my son had been one of the 6, but that is wonderful news for you and happy to hear these random acts of kindness exist for our Recruits and their families!
The curiosity is not going to kill me, just has me twisted a bit, LOL.
Just about 3 weeks to go, cannot wait to hear his voice, wondering if they can pick up a prepaid phone card in the exchange, he did not take one with him, I imagine he will be calling collect! As Diana so eloquently said, PRICELESS!

Marianne said...

hoping our recruits get to enjoy an extra hour of Divine Time today..:)

SR Michels,
This website is really neat all of here in Mission Viejo, CA have been reading about your agenda and what you have been learning. We are so excited and proud of you. I received your first letter today and hope you get mine soon. We all love you and stay strong.

So Do the recruits get to see these blogs, or is it just between civillians?

Hello Families! Just FYI -- your recruit will not be able to view this blog. It is meant as a tool for communication among yourselves with other families who have loved ones in basic training at Cape May. Your recruits are in good hands in Mike 182!

Hang in there and be sure to write them often as that is what keeps them going. :-)

Well I read the post to late, I have already mailed them to her...I hope she doesn't get everyone is trouble...I did get a 10 minute phone call from her today..she said it is going well and loves all of the letters and cards...she did cry for a few minutes when she heard my voice...and was told she will be at the recruiting office in San Diego for 29 days but doesn't know anything after that...she was very up beat about everthing the company is doing...

Only 6 went to chapel? Wish my daughter had been one of those. Really miss hearing from her. Letters are nice but nothing like hearing that voice. Looking forward 11/24. Hang in there parents!

Marianne said...

Samantha's Mama,
at what time did you receive your call? i am carrying my cell phone everywhere, leaving it on at all times, my son wrote that he was asked to play piano at church services, wondering where he was when calls were handed out??

Marianne said...

Well...I got the skinny on the phone call, LOL. He called his lovely girlfriend yesterday, thought he could squeak in another call to me after, told you he still had a sense of humor, CC's must have been on to him, LOL. I do not think she wanted to tell me, maybe she thought I would be upset that he didn't call me, but it's all good, so glad he got the opportunity. I am sure it made his day....I better be getting the next on tho, ;) Hope you all get your calls soon, I am still holding tight to my cell phone

coastiemombarker said...

So, did the phone calls come only from those who attended church?
Did your recruit know their 1st assignment yet? I thought we might not hear from them until at lest the end of this week. Great news for those who got the calls. I know we are all anxious to actually talk to them. Although I have to admit, the old fashioned letter writing is really fun. I actually enjoy and look forward to checking the mail.
Anyone know if USCG in CM is ever coming back??? I would like to sponsor a recruit from another company for Thanskgiving dinner.
We will be staying in Atlantic City for Thanksgiving and I would like to extend an invitation to an Oscar 182 recruit. I know their parents worry about them not celebrating Thanksgiving. I wonder if I am able to do something like that?? If anyone knows or USCG in CM can answer, that would be great.

Larry Richardson, my son and I are arriving at Philadelphia airport at 10:00 am on Monday the 23rd and are renting a car. We are returning on Tuesday as soon as graduation is over (flight is at 6:00). We would be happy to give you a ride to Cape May (or share cost of car) if the times coincide. We are staying at the Grand Hotel but would be happy to help you with transportation while we are there also.

Larry - I was so glad to hear from someone else making the trip from Hawaii. I'm on Oahu. My son is Aaron Pasoquen. The expense and time spent traveling is overwhelming, but I decided that I could not miss such an amazing event in my son's life. I am also renting a car and driving from Phillie. But, I'm staying in Cape May for 2 nights. So, I guess sharing a car would not work. I would have loved to have a driving companion - I'm hoping my son can make arrangements to return with me. Our sons must know each other by now! I look forward to meeting you, and everyone else at the graduation!

My sister's wisdom teeth were removed while she was there last week, so I guess they are serious about doing it during boot camp! I wonder why there are pictures of every company but M-182? They even took pics of N-182 and O-182, I don't understand! I guess if I had to choose between Thanksgiving holiday and pics, I choose turkey day! lol

Chaddy said...

SR VANRENSSELAER(:
Miss you so much, can't wait til you come home! Thanksgiving is going to be the best (: Rammy is keeping fuzzy and your bed warm, and is rolled over waiting for one of your tummy tickles! you make me so proud sister!

Marianne said...

Whitney,
I was wondering the same things and you are correct, if i had to choose it would be early release for turkey as well. Did you hear from your sister since her teeth were removed? How is she doing? Hope all is well. I guess we will hear soon...I hope to anyway.

Donna said...

We are traveling from Florida as well. Fort Walton Beach. What part are you coming from Diana? We have not purchased plane tickets yet but will soon as Heather seems to be on track. Looking forward to it.

Stacie said...

Debbie- I am arriving in Philadelphia on Monday the 23 at 1:42pm and leaving on Wednesday the 25th at 12:57 pm. We are staying at the Congress Hall Hotel. Let me know if those times will work for you as far as sharing a car.

Stacie said...

I am nervous about the wisdom teeth!!! This is a big deal and only one day to recover...Yikes!! I guess they know what they are doing. I have not received a call yet. I know my son must have been at chapel. (I'm right there with you Marianne) They have made him a religious petty officer and he says he is assisting in the chapel. He said he gets to pray with and for people. I am so proud of him!! I am ready for that phone call.

Unknown said...

On ESPN this morning they mentioned they will be showing footage from Cape May and I believe they said shooting live as well. I don't know what this means for M182 but its still exciting that there is a possibility of catching a glimpse of our recruits. It will also be a nice preview of the base so be sure you are around your TV next Wednesday!

Debbie said...

Stacie - Thanks so much for the offer to share a car. Unfortunately, I arrive and leave much earlier on both days. There weren't many flight choices because of connections to Honolulu.

Marianne - I'm guessing that if my son gets a chance to make an earlier-than-expected phone call, he will also choose his lovely girl friend. :(

My son had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled before he left for boot camp. He was back to normal activities the next day. Just needed extra time daily to rinse and keep the areas clean. I'm sure they will allow for (and insist on) that.

Waiting for that next letter - or phone call!! :) Take care everyone!

I noticed that India 182's last journal was posted a little more than an hour ago...it is very inspiring to read. The rest should be following soon! Can't wait to see Mike 182's progress, just 3 weeks to go!

Marianne said...

Oh no!
Did Mike 182 not post a journal this week? Do they know how much we look forward to this?

Diana said...

Donna,
We live in West Palm Beach however are flying out of Ft. Lauderdale to Atlantic City on Monday. There were limited flights into Palm Beach Int. and Gaduation is at 11:00 a.m. on Tues. so I needed time afterward to drive back to the airport. I debated Philly but we had a coastie on the blog earlier that told me that Atlantic City is actually closer to Cape May,a smaller airport and easier to get in and out of so I compared prices and it was also cheaper to go to Atlantic City from Ft. Lauderdale. I booked at Congress Hall which was $109/night for 2 beds which suited our needs. I rented a car with Budget because I had a corporate discount with my employer that made the car about $40 a day. I booked earlier because I have had previous experience with airline tickets getting higher as time got closer. I didn't want to take a chance at not getting flights around Thanksgiving and then if he was rephased I decided to just pay the fee to change them if necessary. My son seems to be on track, so barring injury or illness(praying that doesn't happen) we should be ready. Isn't that the coast guard motto "Always ready"?

Diana said...

Wow I didn't realize how long that was but I hope my research benefits you and others on the site. Oh by the way Congress Hall was reccommended by the coastie also and from the pictures it looks awesome!

Ok, Mike 182 families; Where's our journal for this week? I am trying to be patient but I look forward to Tuesday night every week. I don't even care about weekends anymore, just Tuesdays. Hope all is well with our Mike 182 recruits.
If anyone is reading this blog, send in the journal Please....

Well; looks like no journal this week. :-( We now live for Tuesdays and Cape May Mail Day (Thursday to the rest of the world and us pre-basic training!)in this house; just like everyone else here. Tuesdays bridge the gap between Thursdays.
I'll be curious to know how many make it to church from here on out after word about the phone calls get out....bet its more than 6! And I'll remind Andrew thats what he gets for not going to church... LOL. 21 days and counting!
GO MIKE 182!!

Unknown said...

Ok well even though there isn't a journal for this week (not yet at least) and we still don't have any pictures but there are other options to at least hold us over until then. November 182 has some great pictures of the base and the classroom (check out how little the desks look with all those big boys!) and November's journal as some extra information that Mike's journal didn't include. Hopefully this will supress our curiosities a little.

Debbie said...

Well, USCG in CM is missing and now, so is our journal writer. Hopefully a new one is being assigned. Tomorrow is another day! I noticed those small desks, too! Yikes! I hope their beds (racks) aren't that small!:)

Donna said...

Just like all of you I have started looking forward to Tuesdays and Thursdays. So I really miss having an update today. Hope all is well. Nice to meet you Diana. We will be flying from Pensacola Fl and into Philadelphia. But my parents will be driving up from NC so they will be picking us up from the airport. We are looking into renting a house through Home Away or VRBO.com we have used both sites before and were very pleased. Can't wait!!!

Larry Richardson said...

Tdavis37: Thank you for your kind offer. It is very much appreciated.
Unfortunately, I don't arrive at PHL until 430 PM. Too late to hitch a ride with you to CM. Perhaps after the graduation I could ride with you to the airport?
I still have not booked a room or rented a car, so anyone wishing to split these costs, please e-mail or call me at 808-652-0802. (in Hawaii) Thanks everyone!
Larry

Tuesdays and Thursdays have also become my favorite days of the week!! I was very disappointed that there was no journal and that we have yet to get a single picture!!Not to mention how baffled i was that the Coast
Guard chooses basic training as a good time to take out wisdom teeth!I have never heard of such in any other branch of service.Interesting!!21 days and counting. I know that no news is good news so i jump everytime the phone rings!lol Hopefully we will get our calls real soon from our recruits telling us where they will be staioned! Stay Strong Mike -182 you have a lot of people supporting you!!!

Marianne your question was what time did my daughter call...it was Sunday morning 8:21am...I am in Calif...so she called 11:21am Cape May time...She didn't say where she was calling from but did double check the time it was 5 min 50 seconds...The area code she called from was 609 ...I miss the journal too everyone....look forward to seeing all of you

If any of you are going to rent a car through Avis, Budget, or Hertz here are some promo codes to help you save money. These codes are through my employer but I'm sure the car rental company won't mind me sending them some business.
Avis: Use AWD# B723700 and coupon #TUTA035
Hertz: CDP205666
Budget: V816100
Compare prices from your area and see which saves you the most.

Diana,

That is so sweet. Thank you.

Debbie said...

Wow! Thanks, Diana! It's sure worth checking out. Also, if anyone is still looking for a place to stay, after a long search, I've found that the Buckingham Motel is cheapest ($55/night), very near to the CG training center and the beach. Saw from most reviews that it's clean, quiet and friendly. That's all I really need - just a place to lay my head for 2 nights.

coastiemombarker said...

Hello Mik182 families,
The journal wa great to finally see. Wow, didn't even realize how much I look forward to Tuesday.
We should probably get a call this weekend sometime. And hopefully another letter. Also a letter regarding graduation next week.
Only 20 days to go! Hang in there Mike 182.
We are SOOOOOOOO proud of all of you! Can't wait to meet you all Nov 24....

Diana said...

I'm sorry, I booked at The Grand Hotel not Congress Hall. I'm so confused with all this hotel talk. It was the one recommended and it's 5 minutes from the base. It is also on Beach Road as is the Buckingham. I'm only staying one night since they have a limited amount of leave time.
My son says he's going to "A" school in Yorkstown, Virginia next.

Diana said...

Woohoo! Got a letter today. Apparently my son has been playing taps for the past few days for our company. Hope it wasn't too bad, he hasn't picked up his trumpet in 2 years! Guess church services have picked up, he went on Sunday only no phone call. Hopefully soon.

WOO HOO, got our call from our recruit tonight, about 8:20, said he'd been at band practice when he got back all the other recruits had already gotten their calls so they gave him his late, it was 2 minutes, said he's been sick but they are still giving them all the small pox shot tomorrow, said it is getting cold up there, the long sleeves are the new official uniform and very much welcome. I hope you all heard from your recruits too, especially welcomed on a night when the news coverage of Fort Hood is so sad. Thank you Coast Guard!

Had just read Marianne's post and had sterted typing that we had no call and no letter today; that maybe tomorrow...then I heard my husbands phone ring. I flew upstairs and sure enough..it was Andrew. Sounds great; said everything is going well. He will be stationed in Miami on a cutter.
Somehow he got stitches in his head but will need to wait till we see him to find out. He doesnt know when he needs to report yet. I was supposed to go to a dinner meeting tonight and wouldnt have gotten home as yet. SOOOOO GLAD I didnt go!!!
Hope everyone else has a phone call soon!! GO MIKE182!

Got my phone call about 8:00-
3 min 45sec. Bitter sweet of course and already looking forward to the next phone call when they have their on base liberty next Saturday. Apparently they were allowed to write letters with additional information about their stations which we should get in the next couple of days.

Stacie said...

Just got a letter from my son. He seemed in good spirits and not as stressed out. He said they found out yesterday where they are to be stationed and that he would call me Thursday, Friday or Saturday around 8pm central time....I didnt get a call last night so hopefully it will be tonight!!!!!

alina said...

Got my call last night at around 8:00pm .It was so good to hear my sons voice!! But I am not very happy with his orders to Gavelston, TX.I was praying he would be a litte closer to home for his 1st duty assignment.Where is everyone elses recruit going to be stationed? Only 2 more weeks to go! YEAH!!!!Good luck Mike-182!
BTW...I bought my sons plane ticket after i talked to him because he said he didnt think the CG would fly any1 out of Atlantic City. His ticket 1 way was more than mine was roundtrip!!Its only money and having him with me you cant put a pricetag on that!

Debbie said...

I just hung up from talking to my son! It was so great to hear his voice - hard to describe how happy I feel right now! He is being stationed on a cutter in Hilo, Hawaii. We're on Oahu, so at least he'll be pretty close. Have a good weekend everyone! A little more than 2 weeks and we'll be in Cape May!

coastiemombarker said...

I hope I will hear from my son this weekend. I did receive a wonderful, long letter. He sounded great. Very encouraging and upbeat.
I don't know where he will be stationed yet. Will blog when I get the info. I hope to hear soon.
He did say love all the mail, keep sending. Stay by your phones MIke families. Stay healthy and God Bless. See you at graduation.

Brack said...

Congrats to all of yall that got your calls from your recruits . Kind of bittersweet with my son being pushed back a week due to his injury . His letter this week was upbeat and he stated he hopes to call nest week with information about where he will be stationed .

@ Alina .... How far away from Galveston are you ??

Take care M182.....Stay Strong and Finish Strong

coastiemombarker said...

Got the call!!! He's off to Rockland, Maine, assigned to CGC Abbie Burgess. Said one of his good friends was also assigned to Rockland. Anyone here on the blog have a son going to Maine???
Well, it's been worth the wait. My 19 yr old boy sounded like a 30 yr old man. He is a victim of the dentist also, he has to have his wisdom teeth pulled next week. Hope he does alright. Not too painful for him. Well, hope everyone received their calls as well. It was very loud and very limited, only about 3 minutes. May be able to call again next weekend.

Stacie said...

Hi Mama...two of the best words I've ever heard!! Yea!!! Got a call from my son Brandon tonight!!!! 7:31 pm! He quickly told me he only had 4 min. His voice was a bit horse...he said they have to yell alot. He sounded happy and told me he loved and missed me very much!! He said his unit is terrific (go Mike -182)and he is actually in with a boy that he has known since 4th grade!! How cool is that? He will be stationed in Port O'Connor, Tx...that is only 3 hours from home!!!! I couldnt be more thrilled!!! He said that next saturday they should have more free time and he will try and call again. He had to get re-fitted for his dress uniform as he has lost weight. The best part is...NO WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL!! They told him that his teeth wernt too bad afterall and he could wait...Praise God for that!! Cant wait for everyone else to hear from their recruits.....it is such a relief!

Donna said...

Got my short phone call tonight too. SR Pearson is on her way to Galveston TX. Neither of us are too happy about that but it could have been worse. At least the same climate she is used too. She is from Florida. So she will be about 13 hours from home. The phone call was too short and she seemed a little down. Think she was disappointed in her assignment but it is only 4 months. Guess we'll get the flight arrangements taken care of now all seems to be on track....Yay!!

katie said...

Sounds like the calls are coming in to the families as expected. YAY!! Didnt get a letter this week but I can live with that; the phone call more than made up for the letter!!!
Sounds like some are happy with their assignments, some not so happy.Andrew will be in Miami which is about a 12 hour ride or a quick 2 hour flight. Bottom line; this is the military and you go where you are needed. I would much rather be a parent of a Coast Guard recruit staying here in the States than a parent of an Army or Marine recruit heading to Iraq or Afghanistan. That said... GO MIKE 182!!!!! November 24th will be here soon!!

bethanybowman said...

Our son-in-law called and got his orders to Detroit MI (CGC Bristol Bay I think.) Not the kind of weather he was hoping for, but if it is the place it is 20 minutes from my brother's house in Royal Oak. (All of the USA needs guarding, not just the warm spots.) It is amazing how fast all of this is happening. I hope to see many of you soon.

coastiemombarker said...

I'm not sure what happened to our companies "dream sheets". I was informed by many that the recruits usually get one of their top 5 picks and it kinda sounds like our group didn't. I hope I am misinterpreting. Although my son was excited he too said it was not where he requested. Anyone from Maine? Or anyone else going to Maine? Well, I guess we are getting our welcoming into military life. You go where they need you. I thank God it is U.S. soil for right now. Home for us is Florida so I won't get to Maine but my son will come home to visit as soon as he can. Now we wait for next weekend, hope they earn their liberty and call us again.

katie said...

coastiemombarker,
I am from New England and spent a fair amount of time in Maine; I love it there. Its a gorgeous state and if your son is an outdoorsman, he will be in heaven. I wouldnt suggest going up in the winter but spring, summer and especially fall do not disappoint!! Make sure you find your way downeast while he is stationed there!! Its not too bad a drive from Boston and Portland has a decent airport. Amtrak also services the northeast so that might be an option for you for part of the trip.
Not sure what Andrew had listed on his dream sheet. I will ask if he calls home again on liberty. I know in his letter home (before the call) that he had listed Boston, New York, the southeast and California was listed last in his letter. Not sure if that was the order of requests or not. But you go where they send you; its all good.
Looking forward to the blogging and meeting you on November 24.
Hang in there Mike182!!!

Glad to hear that SR Pearson will be stationed with my son. Considering the location they will probably stay busy.Good to hear some recruits got the assignment that they wanted. Thanks to Katie for pointing out how grateful we should all be that recruits are all going to be stateside and not overseas.I cant wait for next phone call and of course graduation in 2 weeks!!Good Luck Mike-182.
@ Brack I live in Georgia. So it will be about a 12 hour drive.Good luck to your son and hopefully no more injuries!!

katie said...

@ Alina,
Where in Ga. are you? We are in Fayette County. I was at Fort Gillem MEPS for the swearing in & there was one other family present. Andrew shipped out with 3 other recruits.
For us it is approximately a 16 hour ride. It is a 12 hour ride to DC & from DC roughly 4 hours to Cape May. I may gander at the ferry to see if it is running. We will be leaving as soon as we can after graduation. I want to go to the store & get CG Tshirts & sweatshirts. Andrew is hoping he will be able to ride home with us; he wasnt sure yet if he can.
Wishing each recruit well and Mike182 continued success. 2 weeks!!

I feel blessed to have received a phone call last week, but this week when my recruit called she called her boyfriend...but he did give me some information. She will be stationed in Almeta, CA that is in the San Fransisco area. That was in her top choices, I am not certain if it is was number one or not. She is thrilled with the location, not a bad flight home or about a 10 hour drive...She also told him they did some type of gladiator training and she did very well and loved it...not sure what that means...I can't wait to hear all the stories...Maybe a call to mom tomorrow...my phone will be near at all times...

When my son called earlier this week he said to make sure we watch ESPN on Sunday for the countdown. Made some reference to it being taped at Cape May as well. We said ok, but didn't question, now that we have searched ESPN, we wish we had gotten more info. We know about the Veteran's Day 2 hour program but cannot find anything re: Sunday, today. Does anyone out there know what he is referring to?

katie said...

Marianne,
ESPN is doing a Veterans Day special and will be profiling Hotel 182. Go to the main page of the blog and scroll down. It will be shown Wed. Nov 11 at 1000.

Tdavis37 said...

Samantha's mama, my son's girlfriend SR Archard (Kristin) is also going to be stationed in Almeta CA. My son was so upset when he got the call (we live in Florida) that he did not remember the name of the city or anything. I do not know if California was on her dream sheet. I am happy she will be with someone from Mike 182. Hopefully we can meet at graduation. Just a few short weeks. Can't wait!

Marianne said...

thanks Katie, we saw that, but we have been watching ESPN all morning and during the countdown for the football game they are featuring different military blips throughout the day, of all the services, different topics. maybe that is what he was referring to and there will be something re: our recruits or CG at some point, haven't seen it yet....

alina said...

@ Katie
We are in Columbus,Ga but did not go to the atlanta MEPS because his recruiter was in Savannah!(long story as to why we didnt use recruiter closer to home)He left out of Jacksonville FL.We are flying into Atlantic City on Sunday because i cant stomach 17 hours in a car.lol I bought my sons plane ticket after his phone call because he said he wasnt sure if the CG would pay for his ticket if he flew out of Atlantic City! Now that i know that Texas is his assignment we will be limited on time together. So buying his ticket made it easier!!Stay Strong Mike-182!! It has been so nice hearing thoughts and news from other coastie parents. Thank you everyone for that! I am very interested in where everyone is being assigned -our son, SR Paul Jacob, is being sent to Hickman, Kentucky - on the Mississippi River, close to the Tenn. border. Don't think it was on his dream sheet, either. We are from Pensacola, Fl and happy that it is within a day's drive! His girlfriend, from Panama City, was hoping for closer as were we, but it is doable! I cling to the hope that the Coast Guard matches them to certain posts for a reason and that this is the best place for him! What an awesome group Mike 182 seems to be! Families, please share where your Coastie is going! Paul's mom

My son's phone call on Friday was 6 minutes long - someone finally yelled from the background that his time was up. (Just like at home!) He sounded so grown up. He said he'd been sick and that they'd had their small pox shots that day. He said Cape May is a beautiful place and he's really been enjoying it, for the most part. He's been assigned to the CGC Kiska in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. I know his first choice was going to be Hawaii, but, I don't think it was Hilo - which is a very laid back place. Does anyone know how long they usually stay for their first assignment? He also asked me to try looking for apartments for him. Doesn't the CG help them with that? I'm concerned that he's not going to have a lot of time to find somewhere to live before he has to report for duty. I guess Mom is no longer supposed to worry about these things - but, I don't think Moms ever stop worrying. :)

My fiancee has been stationed on CGC Harriet Lane in Portsmouth VA. This also was not top on his wish list. As far as apartments go he told me that he is required to live on the cutter even when it is in port (unless he is married). I don't know if this is for all cutters or just for some. The Harriet Lane is typically at sea for 2 months and in port for 2 months and vice verse. I don't know how long their first assignment typically is but I am under the impression that some will have the option to go to A school after which they will be re-assigned. Has anyone heard anything close to this? And has their been anyone else assigned to VA?

Sandijacob said...

Debbie, I am wondering the same thing about apartments. My son will not be on a cutter and will need a place to live. With only five days leave, I was wondering about looking for apartments for him, also. But the CG seems to handle everything and I am holding off until I hear more. I, too, wonder how long this first assignment will be?

Got a call from my husband last Thursday. His orders are for St. Petersburg, FL. Ironically we currently live in the Tampa Bay area. FL was our number one pick. The downside is he is on a 210 cutter. :(

2 weeks left!! Can't wait to see our men and women!!

All Parents,
I just found additional info for us about our recruit's assignments. Go to www.uscg.mil/hq/capemay, on the left side click on Recruit Training; under the heading click on Unit Information Sheets; then choose geographical map of units; on the map click where your recruit is assigned; a list of units in that area will come up; choose your recruit's unit - that leads you to details about that unit, including housing! It helped me alot!

Sandijacob- great info- thanks!

Mike's journal has been posted, it's all good, hoping the small pox do not make our recruits too sick...2, that is two weeks from today, see you all soon!!

Chelsea,
My son is going to "A" school in Yorkstown, VA. He says it's 12 weeks. Originally we were told "A" school didn't start until Jan. 14th so there is some down time until then that I'm sure they will be working around base. I didn't get alot of time on the phone so I don't know if the 12 weeks includes that time or not

Hello Sandijacob from Pensacola.. I am from Ft Walton Beach. Our daughter SR Pearson is going to Galveston Tx that was not on her list but it is in her 1st choice district. Just like you, would have loved her to be closer and her boyfriend ironically is in Panama City. See you in 2 weeks

Heard from my recruit this morning, he has been in the fever ward, got sick from small pox shot, but will still graduate on time, good news for us! Since we had heard from him last week we felt it was safe to buy our tickets and secure our non-refundable rooms...that was before the shot, do not want to wait any longer, we are ready to head north on the 22nd! He still has his wisdom teeth tho...

Hi can any one help me understand the procedure to get them home? Does the Coast Guard make the arrangements to fly home or do we? Or is my daughter in control of that? so Confused!

Judy
Samanthas Mom where in California are you from?

Sandijacob said...

Here is what I understand about getting our recruits home. Please correct me if I'm wrong - I've studied every site I can find! The coast guard will not pay for our recruit to come during their five day leave if home is not their final destination. They will pay to get them to their first unit assignment. They strongly encourage our recruits to make travel plans through them. Because I am hoping they can secure a better price and a definite seat on a plane home, I am leaving it to my recruit to make his own travel plans, even though he does not know ours. He may beat us home because I read they are free to leave after graduation and we leave the next day. Hopefully they will earn their on base liberty this weekend and can call us and fill us in on this! Anyone else know more?

j fearn said...

Thank You and yes I hope I can talk more to my daughter this weekend and tell her to make those arrangements to get home!

About the recruit flights home:

After hearing from our son on Thursday evening,we booked our flights on Friday and i quickly mailed a letter to him with our flight schedule on it. We are driving to Detroit for family holiday and then flying from there to Orlando, home. He is a reserve so he does not need to report to his base for 9 days per his recruiter, who told us to let SATO arrange his flights (not sure what that stands for) so that is part of the reason he called us this morning, he got my letter and went to the Yoeman's office to see about scheduling his flight from Detroit. They told him to have me book it and they will pay him a reimbursement fee for what it would have cost for them to fly him to Jacksonville from Philly, as Jax is his base. Fortunately we got his one way flight on Spirit for $65.00, today believe it or not! $81 with all taxes so I will not worry about how much they will reimburse him, it was worth it. I quickly sent him his flight arrangements by mail so he can submit it is he wants.

I would suggest you mail them your flight arrangements and let them work it out with the travel office up there (SATO). But if they are active and going to a base within 5 days, that is the flight they pay for.

Hope this helps answer your question.

Donna said...

I went ahead and bought our daughter her ticket home. That may have been a mistake but it was worth it to me just to know for sure! I wrote her and told her so she can see if she can get reimbursed if not no biggie..I'm just ready for the 24th

katie said...

Sent off a letter to my son to find out his report date as he did not know it when he called last week. Was looking at the CG family forum site and it was stated that the recruit needs to pay for his travel to the duty station. I was thinking otherwise but okay... Anyway; given that it is a holiday weekend (assuming he needs to report Monday) flights will be jammed; especially coming out of Atlanta to go anywhere. If I need to get his flight booked to Miami I will need to do so ASAP.
Anyone have any different info or thoughts?
11 more days!!! GO MIKE 182!!

Diana said...

@Katie & Donna,
Earlier in the blog the coastie that was present made comment that the Coast Guard would pay for his trip. In reading website info. they recommended letting the base travel agent(SATO) make his arrangements. This is so they know he will be where he is supposed to be. However, my husband being former military told me when he was in, they usually paid for travel between duty stations only. I asked that question on the site here and got no response. I went ahead and made our son's travel arrangements home and told him in a letter when it came time, to make arrangements with SATO from home to his duty station. On the phone he told me that he wanted to drive to Virginia after his trip home because he wanted to take his car with him. The Coast Guard would reimburse him for meals and mileage, but only the mileage it would be from Cape May to Virginia. Sometimes (talking from Past experince again) you can get a military hop (catch a ride on a military cargo plane) from point to point but that is usually on a space available basis. That is what your son will be able to find out from SATO. Flying everywhere can get expensive as you well know and he might want to check into all the possibilites as he gets more experienced. Just thought this might help him in asking the right questions of SATO.
Good Luck!

Diana said...

@Katie and Donna,

Also, they will give him time for travel, for instance my son will get One day to get to Virginia because that would be the time allotted from Cape May to Virginia. So it will be a long 12-15 hour drive for him from Florida. They contact their next duty station before they leave Cape May so they will know when they have to report and where.

Does any body else have a recruit stationed at the Traverse City, Michigan Air Station?

bethanybowman said...

Does anybody know if the Coast Guard will pay moving expenses. My daughter is supposed to move up to Traverse City with her husband and they need to bring furniture and clothes & stuff from Tennessee to Michigan.

Sounds like we are all worried about travel arrangements. It would be nice if we got more information sooner. Well, maybe this weekend we'll here from our recruits. Hang in there,we're almost done. Anyone have a recruit going to Rockland, Maine? My son will be on CGC Abbie Burgess and told me another good friend was going to Maine also. Have great weekend and stay by your phone..

I got a letter from my son yesterday and he was still under the impression that he had to find his own housing at his duty station (CG Cutter Kiska in Hilo). So, I searched the web and found a good, informative site. The main link to go to is "USCG ISC" (Integrated Support Command") Then, they have the individual duty station links. There is a local phone number to call, if you don't find your information on the website. I called the housing office to ask my questions and they were very nice and informative. In fact, he asked my son's name and when I told him, he laughed and said they had just been talking about him because he owes them some paperwork. It was comforting to know they were expecting him. Anyway, hope this helps some of you.

Just received an on base liberty call from our son; we spoke for about 20-25 minutes. It seems like a lot of us have had questions re: transportation from leave to duty station. The CG travel people will book his flight from Atlanta to Miami on Delta with Andrew picking up the cost of the flight. As far as housing goes; he will have to live on the cutter for 6 months so that is one less thing we need to concern ourselves with at the moment. Before he left; he had decided to go the aviation route but changed his mind since being there. His report date is December 3rd so that is a huge bonus for us; we get an extra few days having him home. YAY!! He was going to a place and pig out on fries and burgers tonite. It was a fantastic phone call and the highlight of our week. Hope you all have had (or will receive) calls from your recruits. 10 days till Cape May. GO MIKE 182!!

Received my call too. Talked for about 15 minutes. My son sounds so mature and has a lot of pride in himself and his company. Says it's tough but great (and even occasionally fun). Says CC Wingate is awesome. Also the other CC's (I was so excited to hear his voice I forget some of the details. They toured a cutter today and he is excited to get to "His ship". Had his wisdom teeth pulled yesterday and is doing fine. Not sick, no fever just needs some soft food for a couple of days. Anyones son/spouse named Paul? My son, Joey, says they have become great friends and he is also stationed in Maine. He asked me to book his flight from home to Maine. Report date is Nov 30. Wishing much success to Mike 182 and see you all at graduation. Only 10 days>>...

Well; I cancelled the reservation I made a while back at the Days Inn in Wildwood and made one at the Grand Hotel. For those who havent made reservations (or will need more rooms)they still have rooms but are filling up. Looks like there will be enough to occupy our 11 year old with the pool and arcade room for the short while we will be there on Monday.
9 days and counting!! Go Mike 182 recruits and families!

Got our call too, talked about 10-15 minutes but he said the line behind him was growing and he did not want to hold up the other recruit's calls, he had called his girlfriend and was making one more to his best friend. Said they too had all gone to the exchange and loaded up on junk food, was almost sad to see it coming to an end. Said they may wait to take his teeth out and that they told them they sometimes do it right up to grad day, and keep them an extra day to make sure they are good to go...good thing we have reservations for Wednesday night too. Can't wait for next week...counting sown 9, 8, almost 7...see you all real soon!

Any one have a prior military service member in the company? Our son was in the Navy from 02 - 06. Is anyone else from Colorado making the trip for Graduation? We're from Fort Collins area & are flying in on Sunday to do sightseeing in Philadelphia since our daughter is on break from CSU whole week. Does anyone know how formal we are to dress for graduation, is a tie required for Dad? Looking forward to next Tuesday. Our recruit sounds great, glad it's almost over & he can start A school in CA after the first of the year.

katie said...

Got a call from our son today. After thinking hat his flight from Atlanta to Miami was goig to be booked by the travel office and paid by our son, we found out otherwise. I spoke with Delta and found out a couple things. They have "military fees" which can be a little lower than the internet rate. Also, if he has his travel orders, they will waive the $15 fee per bag. They can check up to 10 bags. This is only if they are reporting to a duty station and not on leave. Since he is reporting to Miami, his t-shirts
and shorts shouldnt take up too much space so i think he is safe!LOL
One week from tomorrow!!! Safe travels to all!

Got a call from our recruit on Saturday. She indicated that people dressed in all fashions for the graduation. Some dressed formal and others in "nice" jeans. Hope that answers your questions. She said she might be able to get on the computer this week and was going to read the blog. Guess my surprising her for graduation will be revealed if she reads them. One week from today - Can't wait!!! Tina

I can't wait to see you in the color guard. That is so cool! We will take lots of pictures and have a great time even though it will be short. See you in one week! Miss you, Love you, SOOOOOOOOOO PROUD OF YOU! Tina

Coastie Parent,
I saw the ESPN special on Veteran's Day and the parents of those recruits (Hotel 182)wore "Nice" clothes. I would say whatever is comfortable for you. It will be a memorable event and you may want pictures. Your recruit is going to be in his/her dress blues. I think "Church clothes" (whatever that means to you) would do, probably a tie isn't necessary. Check the weather before you all go!

I'm not sure if anyone else plans on spending the day with their coastie during their off-base liberty but here are a few details you may want to keep in mind: as of now leave will not begin until 1:00. Also, there are two gates and they are not sure which they will march out of but apparently there will be a lot of cabs waiting at the gate so just find the one with all the cabs. Hope this helps anyone who plans on being in Cape May on Saturday.
