SR LeCouBacon called Saturday night with his station assignment -- Ketchikan AK. He's thrilled! He's crazy! We've been investigating the route he needs to take to get there; thru Bellingham taking the Alaska Marine highway (nearly 2 day ferry trip). He was upbeat about OSCAR-182, and looking forward to graduation. Keep the letters coming!

Received a call from my son SR Daniel Rankin on Friday with his station assignment in Memphis, Tennessee. We were both disappointed as we live in south Florida and we're hoping he would be stationed closer to home. Memphis is l4 hours away. Has anyone else in Oscar l82 been assigned to Memphis.

Hey Son,

I hope everything is going well for you. Today begins week 6 - only two to go before graduation day - I love you withall my heart and I miss you so much. I can't wait to see you in that uniform, I know my heart will be exploding with such tremendous pride for what you are achieving.

I mailed you 2 packages next day but the Tallassee postal service messed up - one came back and I had to call Cape May postal service to handle one of the problems - so you should get all of them by Wed., Nov. 25th.

I love you son, we are all so proud of you - see you soon.

Proud mom of SR Gehrke, Shane - he talks about being buddies with a (I'm going to spell this all wrong because he can't spell in his letters - ha ha) Vans Hermisile and a Martinez - and says he's pretty much friend with everyone - which is great to hear. How wonderful to talk to him today from his host home! Shane is going to Electronic Technician A school in California in January and says a total of 6 Oscar company recruits are also headed there - How great is that? They get to know each other from boot camp.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! And a special thanks for the wonderful sons and daughter God saw fit to give us. ~~Julie

I got to talk to my son SR Moran. He sounded great. And so grown up. As I thought, I didn't hear from him over the weekend because he let those w/ families of their own or those needed to let family know where they would be going, call first. We already knew where he was going before he left for Cape May. He is in the reserves and will be going to Virginia for Class A school to be an MK. As it turns out, lucky for me, he will be only 100 miles away until jan 11th, when school starts up. That sounds like I might get him for x-mas afterall.
I hope everyone enjoyed their phone calls from their Coasties. My son was at the Elk Lodge with 14 others.

SN Parks my son SR Rankin has been assigned to Memphis, TN on a buoy tender. His career goal in the coast guard is to be a boatswains mate. His choice was to be on a boat in any unit in Florida. What would his duties be and would it lead him to the boatwains mate position. Thank you for any information you can provide.

SN_Parks said...

Crystal,
I have experienced very little about the bouy tender life. As a non rate on a bouy tender, he will do alot of work. Mostly cleaning bouy's and doing misc. work like that. BM's (Boatswains Mate) do most of the work on bouy tenders and if he wants to go BM, a bouy tender will be a very good first unit for him, he will learn alot of different things and he will definetly know if he wants to go BM or not by the time he leaves that unit. I hoped i helped, let me know if you have any other questions.

With only nine days left (thank the LORD) I made a facebook page for all of the family members of the recruits in Oscar 182. You guys should check it out! There's one for Papa 182 and it looks awesome, they have tons of pictures and everything, so if you guys want, join and and pictures! It's always nice to see everyone and this way, we'll know who to look for at graduation. It still could use a lot of work and if you have any ideas for it let me know! I can make you an admin and we can make it cooler than Papa 182. I've posted the ESPN video, there isn't much else to work with... But you should still check it out and join!

I can't wait until SR Gehrke comes home in nine days. :]

The link for the page is

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=wall&gid=190025684132

Or you could search USCG Oscar-182.

One thing that would be really cool is if we all video taped the home comings and posted them. It may help fill the world with a little bit more happiness. :]

who else is having a problem w/ their new coastie. My son is in the reserves and they don't seem to know what to do with him while he waits to go to A school. His duty station hasn't even head of him. Its very frustrating not knowing if he is going to report to school 6weeks before his start date or stay home. He was originally supposed to report on the 19th of Dec to Yorktown VA and school would start on the 19th of Jan.Then he was then told he wouldn't start school until Feb 1st. and to contact his Unit when he got home and ask them what to do. Why can't this be simple ???
