Hi, Families of O-182,
My daughter is in J-182 and we found out after we bought tickets to fly to graduation that it is actually closer and sometimes cheaper to fly into Atlantic City. Most of us are flying into Philadelphia which is 2 hours from the base, Atlantic City according to the locals is about 30 minutes away. So try getting both prices before you commit to buying your tickets.
Congratulations for supporting O-182. THey and you will get through all of this! Good Luck!

Both Spirit and Air Tran fly into Atlantic City and you can still get good rates until about 2 weeks before your trip. They have specials all the time. Got a postcard from my son, SR Vyse today, which made me very happy and relieved. I have started a new blog on google called Moms of Coast Guard bootcampers so we moms can cry on each others shoulders.
Hang in there Oscar 182. We love you and know you will make it through!!!

Monica said...

Hi coastiewife4, I looked up the rates for Southwest airlines on their website under "special offers." If need be, you are able to change the flight date but you will have to pay additional fees. Ticket prices vary depending on the city you are flying out of. It's worth a shot!

Unknown said...

Hi all, Yes there is a transfer fee and it also depends on where you are flying from. I am flying not-stop from North Carolina. It was $25 one way. So for round trip with fees about $71 a ticket. Couldn't pass it up. Just wanted to let you all know in case you wanted to check it out. Hope everyone is doing good on the homefront. As my teenage daughter would say "The Coast Guard is ball'in"

The Branson Bunch said...

Maureen: Don't worry. We've received one letter and one postcard from our coastie, SR Robert Branson. He says they are very busy. The first week was mostly getting lots of shots, marching and getting yelled at 8)
He said everyone is good. We know our son is OK becuase he asked us to send money; being from Savannah, he perhaps underestimated the cool Jersey Fall and had to by an additional sweat shirt 8)
Hang in there. Remain prayerful. We hear the weeks get better. And we'll see our heroes soon!

Laurie, I have a question about NJ. We are from Los Angeles, Calif. I am trying to find a flight so we can attend graduation. From LAX there is one airline that flies’s to NJ. It’s Air Tran. But I don't know if the airport is close to Cape May. If I fly into Philly I heard it was a 2 hr. drive to Cape May. Someone told me to fly to Atlantic City because it's a shorter distance to Cape May. It is over $400. to fly to any one of the cities, except NJ that is $134.
So can you please help and tell me how far the airport from Cape May is. I would really appreciate it. thanks:]

Debra,

You should probably try to fly into Philadelphia. Atlantic City is closer (by over an hour) but a very small regional airport and prices will probably be higher. Check and see if Spirit Airline or Continental have any direct flights from LAX to Atlantic City - you might get lucky. It is also sometimes cheaper to fly into Newark - a 3 hour drive but could be worth doing if the price is right. It isn't difficult to get to Cape May from any of these cities. Baltimore is another option - about the same drive time as Newark.

We received a letter from our son today (SR Robert Branson)! It's dated 01 NOV. He said that that O182 is only allowed to read letters and write on Sundays. He also says there are 96 members in the Company (one of the largest at the Center). He weighed 151 lbs. going in; he guesses he's lost another 10 lbs. from the intensive training and eating healthy. He says they are eating lots of oranges to stay healthy. Here's the bottom line: write, write, write. Tell everyone you know who loves your Coastie to write. They are craving letters from home. All is well with Oscar 182. We have that from inside! 8)

PS - Our son (SR Robert Branson) is in the O182 photo of our boys running from their sleeping quarters. He's the one in the blue uniform. Ha-ha. Actually, he's the one wearing the glasses, with his left side to the camera. That's our boy!

He is the Catholic Religious Petty Officer for O182 and that gets him out of push ups on Wednesdays.
I am so happy to hear from him and he sounds great!
I hope the rest of you receive your letters soon! It is a big relief!

RAMP is a seperate platoon that if the recruit is falling behind or having problems they work with them then decide if they need to be reverted go back a week or go back to O-182....YES FOR NOW Sunday is the only day they get to WRITE letters...coming week 4 and 5 here and there THEY DO get a 1/2 hour to hour in the evenings to write. But they have mail call other days than Sunday.... And you should def check out the blog momsofcoastguardbootcamp.blogspot.com...I have posted alot of answers to the same questions you guys have on there! VERY INFORMATIONAL for those of you new to this "world" LOL....

basically they are alot harder on them in ramp...more motivational...its not fun by any means and makes reg bootcamp look somewhat easy...

Hi everyone,

My boyfriend left me in charge of paying his bills while he is away at bootcamp and is set with automatic deposit. Does anyone know when they are supposed to be paid? His bills are due soon and I'm worried! Thanks!

S Denne said...

Monica...my son (in Oscar 182)said in his letter that they get paid on the 1st and 15th of each month...his paperwork was missing so he hasn't been paid yet...but if your boyfriends was set up correctly it should be in there! Is there anyway you can check his balance. If it isn't in there you may need to contact his recruiter. Good luck!

MilitaryBrat4Life said...

Hey Monica, I also am paying my boyfriends bills while hes gone and I checked his account on the 1st and nothing...I was told it sometimes takes longer than the 10 days from the 20th to the 1st to get everything processed so be expecting a bigger check on the 15th. So instead of just 1st to the 15th pay we should have oct 20th thru Nov1st and Nov 1st thru Nov 15th on the 13th actually. If payday falls on a sunday...they pay them at midnight thursday! Sooo you should have it there by the friday before the 15th which I believe is the 13th! And then on Dec 1st his pay will be a little less than this first paycheck. Also for the first few months the coast guard will be taking out a specific amt each check to pay for everything they have received. So if its not a whole lot thats why!

Unknown said...

To answer the pay question. My son is SR Hunter and I am the wife of a soldier. He will get paid probably on the 15th, This class did not probably make the cutoff date which is around the 20th of the month. On the 15th they should get paid from the 20th to the end of October and also half of their pay for Nov. Also, remember that some of the stuff they were issued, they have to pay for. So they will take that out of the pay. Probably over the course of 3 pay periods so it won't be so hard. I know Army gives a annual clothing allowance to enlisted to replace worn out unitforms. Hope this helps.

Is anyone else having problems with the "Moms of coast guard" Blog, mine is not comming up

S Denne said...

Stonefamily...Justin's recruiter called us to tell us there was a problem...I guess Cape May called him and wanted his account info again. So if you haven't been called I doubt there is a problem...this was on Tuesday that I got the call. There is still nothing in his account so I am guessing they will get paid on the 15th it will jsut be a larger paycheck.
Maureen...I am not having any problems getting onto the Mom's blog....not sure why you are having problems!

coastiewife4 said...

Didn't see a lot of smiling on that video, but there seems to be intensity, so I'm confident the men and women of O-182 are absorbing their training and learning to work as a team. Hey Everyone,

We haven't heard from our coastie yet about where he is being stationed. My future daughter-in-law got a letter from our SR Dillard on Thursday he would be writing to tell us. I am so proud of my son. I told him at the airport when he left that I was sending him off a young adult but the next time I got to see him he would be a "man" and I hear the change in him with every letter that the Coast Guard is transitioning him into that man. Thank you to all the CC's for the great job you are doing with our sons and daughters and for grooming them to be the best that they can be.
