I am SR Haenry Reed's mother's cousin. I am also a Navy Veteran, having served from 1984-1988 as a Hospital Corpsman. Hank, I am VERY proud of you! Get used to waking up at 4am, & going to bed at 10pm, with endless marching on the grinder, endless PT, and endless classes in Navy decorum & history. But I grew up in the Navy. I wouldn't trade those years for anything. Take a mental picture of yourself now, and then take another look at yourself after you've graduated. You will be amazed at how sharp & disciplined you've become. How proud you've become. Hint: if the chow is bad, try ice cream sandwiches with peanut butter. We lived on them in boot camp. I will leave you with 2 more pieces of advice, take every opportunity afforded to you, and NEVER volunteer for anything. Just remember, from a proud veteran to a new Coastie, Congratulations on taking this very large step in your growth & in serving your country during a very unstable time. I am VERY proud of you, and will stay in touch. Know your family loves you, and you have me, here in California sending you thoughts from 3,000 miles away. Stay safe, rest when you can, and keep your shoes spit shined. Love you, Judith

Greetings PAPA 182! This is a very proud uncle of one of your recruits. I will go by the name BIG MIKE he will know who it is, he better! Congrats to everyone for completing your first week of training, only 7 more togo, forget what day it is but keep counting down the weeks it will go faster. I've been watching alot of video on what you guys are going through and I can only tell you one thing DONT FALL ASLEEP IN CLASS!! As your mother said "AWESOME are you!" you are all awesome for doing something very few people do. Take care of each other, when one falls pick em up, you never know when you will need a hand and you only have each other to rely on. For those of you who care the Yankees are leading the WS 3 games to 2 with 2 games left in the Bronks to close it out, but like your training it aint over yet. Remember "whats gona work?" TEAM WORK. Leah and Maggie say hello and miss you very much, Maggie misses you more but Leah is keeping an eye on this page as well. Take care, all of you! Dec 18th will be here before you know it! it may suck right now but on Dec 18th you will know why you choose to be a Coastie! Love you guys, see you soon (BUYYYYY)

Hello SR Huppenthal and PAPA 182. I just wanted to let you know that I'm rooting for you all. (Not like with pom poms and a short skirt, cause that would be tacky, and something to save for graduation) but rooting for your continued successes and determination as you overcome the many challenges of camp.
To SR Hupp … remember no matter what, remember: grit your teeth, say “that word” and just do it and do It to the best of your ability.
Know that Mom and I are as proud as we can be and that we never stop thinking of you.

It is true that your young guardians will not be able to read these, but when they earn their liberty in week 6 or 7 they have an opportunity to do so, so keep the comments coming. It also is a good way to converse with eachother about your feelings and create friendships via this blog, so keep doing so.

Hello all I am the Proud Mother of SR Womack. Sometimes we feel that we are all alone in situations sometimes, but when I found this blog and saw all of this love and concern I all of a sudden didn't feel alone. I had been waiting since the day my son left for some sign of life. I've been all over the coast guard website and even went to the city of cape may's website. Our Loved one's will persevere and stand strong. I am praying for PAPA-182 and their families everyday. Looking forward to meeting some of you at graduation. Take care and have a blessed day. Angel, I too have been searching every website for info about our kids. I can't believe how much I miss talking with my son, SR Callahan. Silly, it's just 8 weeks. You can google Cape May live webcams to get a glimpse of the weather there. There is even a beach cam of a light house. I have also read the other company blogs. N-182 shared that the SRs may get a real home cooked Thanksgiving meal by being hosted by a Cape May family. Would that be nice? Hang in there P-182 families!

Hello Ida and Coastiemom, I miss my son so much. Sometimes I am busy doing something at work at home and he passes my thoughts and I get sad because I miss him, but happy because he is away doing such a great thing for himself and this country. We are in Riverside Co. southern california. I was just telling my husband that we better get busy making flight arrangements and hotel reservations. Cape May looks like a nice place to visit, but it is going to be cold when we are there. I can't wait to get to my computer so that I can read all of the posts it is so encouraging for me and I know all the young men and women will be touched when they are able to read all of the love coming their way. I know it is only 8 weeks, but they are still our babies :-). Take care all and SR Womack we love you kid, and as I always say,"you are my favorite son"(he's my only son).

angel said...

PAPA-182,keep your heads up and stay strong you've almost made it to your second week. What a great accomplishment. When sundays come I encourage you to take advantage of relaxing as much as you can. Always remember that your family is back home wherever that may be thinking of you. Sometimes our minds play tricks on us and will make us think that everyone is gone on with their lives but that is far from the truth. One thing no one can take from you is memories. Stay strong, mom of SR Womack

Hi Friends and Family of PAPA182,
I, too, have been all over the other sites and have been reading and participating in a LOT of other blogs... It helps to hear what the others are going through that are just one week ahead of our kids! Most of the OSCAR182 got their first letters today! It's exciting to hear about them, and can't wait to get my first letter!
We are from just outside of Lincoln, NE. My son (Justen) shipped out of Kansas City with 2 other guys - do either of those families happen to be on here yet? If so, I'd love to "chat" with you. I think I remembered that both of you were going to be at the "swearing in" on Tuesday morning and was wondering if either of you took any pictures?
Thoughts and prayers for ALL of PAPA182 and the families of Fort Hood!

angel said...

Thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends @ Fort Hood, from PAPA-182

Ida said...

Hi Kindy,
I took a few pics of the swearing in on that Tuesday 10/27. There were only a handful of them getting sworn in....but I do remember the three going into the CG so one must have been your son. I also did a video of them getting sworn in however my camera was mostly on my son but I did move around a bit :)
And Angel....I think it's wonderful that our sons chose the CG....at least they will stay in the U.S. :)
Take care and Bless you all.
Ida (Manny's Mom).

Good morning Ida, I have to say Amen sister to your comments. I feel that our children picked the best branch of the armed forces. Go Coasties! :-)

angel said...

PAPA-182, Good morning SR Womack. I was sitting thinking about swear-in and what a monumental one you had because your own father was ab le to swear you in. That was so awesome, and as I showed the video to my co-workers I came to realize just how special that moment was really for all of us, but more importantly you and your father. When I watch it I get goose bumps. I am so proud of your choice of going into the Coast Guard you and all of the other young men and women with you are wiser than you know. I have to go now, I am almost late to work everyday messing around with this computer trying to post a message. I feel that it is important. I love you very much. Mom

PRcoastiemom said...

Hi Angel and P-182 families, I am Connie, SR Brian Callahan's mom. We live in Paso Robles. I have had many of the same thoughts and feelings that you have expressed. We are in Paso Robles, Ca. That is on the central coast just 1/2hr north of San Luis Obispo. Will you be flying from LAX? The flights are so expensive but I'll pay whatever in takes to see my son graduate. I am so proud of these fine young men and women! This blog helps so much, I am very grateful.

There have been only two times that reality has hit me as to what is actually happening here. The first time was as the airplane backed away from the jetway in Myrtle Beach. I realized that I saw for the last time the person I called "My Little Boy". The poor man sitting next to me just played 11 days of golf and was heading back to reality. He leaned over and said "I know how you feel" as I sat there trying not to cry all over his clean white shirt. The second was today, as I read the final journals by India182 and Juliet182. Today as the Yankees walk down the Canyon of Heros one "Little Boy" will not be there, he is fulfilling his own dreams. He is becoming a "Guardian"!

Hey Hanker Banker, I hear there's ghosts down in Cape May, don't become one of them!! All the best and we all are pulling for you. Cuz Dennis

Ida said...

Angel ... Kindy ... and all the other Papa-182 folks...it feels so good to talk to others. It's so funny that my son is in Papa-182. Our 1 and only grand daughter was born 21 months ago, and we are Nana and Papa...she is my older son's little girl. So it was kind of special in 2 ways for us, special because our younger son made the best choice of his life and special because of our little angel...Avah. I can't wait for our first letter to arrive but it's just comforting knowing that we all have great sons/daughters and we are all caring/loving/supportive parents. Love and Bless you all. I pray for our sons/daughters of Papa-182 everyday!

Hi! Ida, I see that you have a few pics of the swearing in. My cousin swore in to go off to the USCG, and I'd love to see if I can spot him in any of your pics, or in your video. Hello from San Diego to PAPA-182 families and loved ones. It so heartwarming to read and truly feel the love that is overflowing for our sons and daughters. My son, SR Morgan is 19. Being a single Mom for a long time, now it's like a huge void. Even though he is an adult and reaching for a dream and growing into a more amazing person, I miss my boy!! Having read the other company journals, you can't help but say wow! The maturity, unity and commitment to country exuding from the journals is amazing. We can all be so proud of all of them, whether they are ours or not. Love and prayers to all of you and your sons and daughters.

To all the family of Papa 182. Talked to my daughter today (she is in medical hold) and she told me that the last she heard, none of the “postcards” went out when they were supposed to. CC got IRATE because they either had no stamps on them, were filled out incorrectly, had nothing on them at all, or in a few cases, the recruits didn’t even give them back to him. SO if you have not received your post card yet, that is why.

To Free2b61 - your daughter has joined an incredible group of recruits (if their parents are anything to go by). Join us on facebook at USCG Papa 182 and on the blog at http://momsofcoastguardbootcamp.blogspot.com/

Best group of people ever!

coastiewifejenna said...

Let me help answer a few questions about this blog. The recruits can't see this until and if they earn liberties in the 6/7 week. About Thanksgiving look up operation Fireside. Only recruits in weeks 3-8 will get to go. Also, the post only come out on Tuesday and they dont start until the recruits are in week three. So the blogs will end up being about two weeks behind. You should get a postcerd that they will get to write their first sunday there and then they get to write letters on the next sunday. This blog is really for you the families to communicate back and forth to make and share travel info and plans. Hope this is helpful. And questions just ask! Good luck families. It gets easier from here!

Yes it's Tuesday!!! Oscar182 posted in week two so let's all hope that PAPA182 will do the same. I got a quick note from Hank and he said everything is great! I'm thinking he did not unpack his address book before they checked his travel bag and that is why he was asking for all the addresses I put in there. Somethings will never change. I am still looking forwarded to tomarrows First Take show on ESPN2. We have multiple DVRs set. My eyes will be looking out for any glimpse of PAPA182. This is torture.

The show is called ESPN2 First Take it is on tomorrow around 8:00am New Mexico time

I never thought that Hanks toothache and emergency wisdom teeth extraction would actually be a good thing, The Lord works in mysterious ways. From November182's blog about 20 of the recruits had some sort of dental work done during week 3. No excuse for Hank his teeth are gone!! Sorry Honey you still have to work hard no R.A.M.P. for you, whatever that is.

It's my understanding that there is a five day leave permitted after graduation day however, I believe my husband is to report to A school some time in Jan will he come home or have to report somewhere after the five days are up?

Thanks

Just copy and paste it! There are a lot of OSCAR moms and a lot from other companies too! Even several of us PAPA mama's!

There is also another FB page. In your FB search type in "Coastie Moms". Hope this helps!!

Hi CJ I usually go to Oscar182's blog and look for terri's name and then click on it. That will take you to her personal site go to the bottom and she has the link. My only hope is that the historian for PAPA182 was late and didn't get it to the webmaster until late. I noticed that oscar didn't have a blog posted today either. And the commanders message wasn't changed. Oh so wishful!!!!

All I can hope for is that it will come on thursday. I have been writing a letter or sending a card everyday, but it gets kind of tough to find things to talk about. Anyway I just try to keep the encouraging words flowing, I am not going to lie I am getting a little impatient. Trying hard not to, but I mean it is really tough. I just want to know that he is doing fine. Well we are 2 weeks down and I guess that the journal post won't be until next week in week 3. I've got my fingers crossed for thursday's mail. Hi Sr Reed! Hey Hank, How are you doing on this Veterans day? By now you've been somewhat indoctrinated & are getting used to the grind. EVERYONE feels as if they've made the biggest mistake of their lives in the first 2 weeks. It's tough training, but I know you'll do well because I know your Mom so well & how she raised you. It's 0450 in California & I can't sleep. Hopefully they aren't yelling at you too much. When I was in the Navy, my Company Commanders weren't allowed to curse at us. But we were women. I don't know how the guys were treated. We were also segregated. Women together & Men together. I don't know how it is for you, but some of the photos have the men & women marching together. As it should be. As I said, I was in during the Reagan years which was essentially Peacetime for the US. Have you eaten any ice cream sandwiches & peanut butter yet? I can't wait to see the photos of you at graduation, cleanshaven for the first time since yould grow facial hair! I'm sure you are doing fine. Just follow orders & study Coastie History hard. You'll make it much easier on yourself. And remember, Don't volunteer for ANYTHING! Love you, Judith

Hi Papa 182 families, I'm SR Nash mom, Kim. Some of the songs I thought of that contain Papa are Oh My PaPa by Eddie Fisher in the 50's, Papa Was a Rolling Stone in the 70's by the Temptations, I think, but I'm not sure, and Papa Don't Preach by Madonna in the 80's. In reference to the hotels, if you go under Cape May they have a section for entitled Coast Guard and they list several hotels that are near the training base. Some of them are pet friendly for those of you who want to take your furry four-legged friends; some hotels also have an indoor heated pool for those who like to swim. We received a post card on MOnday; not a lot of information. My son is my only child and he wrote they are very busy, but learning a lot and having a lot of fun. We are planning to go down Decmeber 17th. Hope to meet other Papa 182 families. Keep going strong Papa 182 and lots of support for all our sons and daughters serving throughout the military branches. Kim :-) My apologies if this message is on twice; I'm having a hard time posting it.

Barbara said...

Papa's Got a Brand New Bag by James Brown, and I'm sure there are alot of new tricks in that bag by now. My posts are going on twice also so maybe it's the site and not the Moms. I've watched the show many times saw the kneeling recruits but I can not see my son. I can take out the girls and glasses but that just does not narrow it down enough for me. Flesh of my own flesh, saints preserve us.

BIG MIKE said...

Very good with the songs everyone! Keep em coming! BTW if any of you read my blog yesterday I do know Barbara, shes my sister. I just thought she would get a kick out of it and she did. The reason I'm so interested in what is going on with the recruits is because her son, SR Reed is not only my nephew but also my best friend! He spent the last month with me and my wife (Leah) in Myrtle Beach SC where I live. I drove him to Columbia SC, handed him over and been a mess ever since. I will be easily picked out of the crowd at graduation because I will be the 6ft 7in guy screaming like my sister and crying like a baby. I cant help it, to think of the long haired skinny kid that I last saw in Columbia sitting on the curb smoking a cig as I pulled away, to thinking of him on graduation day, a MAN in his dress blues makes me weak!! I can't wait, see ya'all there!!

My daughter SR julie Jane't just called me. She was in November 182 and got hurt and wasin the hospital for 10 days. She was only allowed to call me today to tell me she is now officially assigned now to Papa 182. I heard "SOMEONE" in the backround telling her that all she could do was give me her new address. She was instructed to call me maam. That was weird. Anyway, I of course gushed, told her the whole time she was talking how much I loved her and I know you have to keep a straight face, and she would say yes maam. It was so nice to here her voice. I asked if she was at the ESPN show, she said no maam. I am so proud of her. I was hearing the woman and recruit in her, but in my mind seeing my little girl.

I got 2 letters from SR Julie Jane't yesterday. she talked about her tie in the hospital, how hard it was to study, how painful her stress fractures and the physical therapy had been. but she got better, yeah. She also she has never been more excited to be a part of "something". She also said she sucked at shining her boondockers. Haha, she never was good at cleaning. she said the company commander loved making them do their ladders drills to the music of metalicca. Boy do I miss her.
Thanks to all the people on this blog. I think we are helping each other get through this.

Good morning PAPA-182 family, I got home from work last night and went to the mail box and I felt like the light from heaven was shining down on my mailbox and I could hear the glorious choir singing, "AWW AWW AWW". When I saw the letter from my SR. HALLELUJA! Talking about excitement, he sounded so grown up and positive. I feel so much better, and next week is week 3 so there should be some journal postings. Well I hope that everyone has a good day sincerely from Southern California. I love you SR Womack and you are the best son a mom could ever dream of having.

Hi, Papa 182 Families and Friends!
It is so great to know that you are all out there all around the country feeling similar feelings like missing our son and worrying about his mental and physical well-being, while he is pushing himself to limits never before experienced --- And to be able to share with you our enormous pride in him and the rest of his company.
We have heard from him and he is well. In spite of all of the hard work and physical demands and lack of personal time, he seems to be feeling that this is all good. We are so happy for him because he may have finally found his calling. We are proud of the person that he was and the person that he is striving so hard to become.
See you all at graduation!

Barbara said...

Hi PAPA People!! We also received a letter from SR H. REED. He is great, He can't wait to come and hangout at Grams, go figure we had to beg him to show his face before. They started with 99
(BIG PAPA)in their company and have lost some, he said they are down to 92. He is also sounding different, changed somehow, for the better. On the ESPN special I only count about 55 in the group that we think is PAPA182. Maybe they had to earn that honor. So TGIF another work week down.

Coastsider said...

Hello Papa-182...For all of you who thought your parents were strict and over disciplined you, now is your reality check. If boot camp feels like another day at home, you were probably correct. If not then now you can value the way your families treated you when they thought you needed to be led in another direction. Being prior Coast Guard, many moons ago, I can honestly say I don't regret one day of it. Good luck to all of you and hang in there. JP's Dad...

PRcoastiemom said...

My letter finally came today! I waited so long and not very patiently I might add. The letter sharing really helped me through the waiting so I will share mine. Brian says Papa 182 is full of talkers and they are getting a lot of I.T. for it. No surprise really, they are just like us on this blog! He says it is harder than he thought but is "staying below the CC's radar", although he did get caught "resting his eyes" in class and paid for it. He misses soda more than he thought he would, driving his Jeep, and getting dressed at his own pace. He is the Catholic religous petty officer for Papa 182. I wonder what responsibilites that entails? Anyone know? He said it was a relief to go to Mass and experience something familiar again, a reminder of home. It was much to short and he clearly had not received any of my letters yet. It was post marked Nov 9th.

Kindy Belew said...

Hi all! Barbara, I thought I counted around 55 in the ESPN show too! Justen told me in his letter that they had "lost" 8, but he didn't say what they started with! 99 seems like a HUGE company!

For those of you on FACEBOOK and have not yet joined the USCG PAPA 182 group yet... join us!! We have several pics posted there of the ESPN show!!

It was such a blessing this week to see Justen's face AND get a letter the next day, he sounded so positive it really made me more at ease!!

Darla said...

Hi everyone! I agree with Kindy that getting our letters is a huge relief! I am not so sucked into the computer groveling for any bit of info. It's exhausting. LOL! My son also indicated there is a bit of the company getting into trouble. I don't like the sound of their consequences. It's getting cold, that makes have to lay on the cement upon waking quite chilly! Yes, they are rethinking how Moms and Dads really aren't so bad after all!!!! I definitely feel the changes coming on. If only he would call me Dearest Mother everyday!!! Love you son!! Every have a blessed weekend. I am gong to relax a little and keep the computer in sleepy mode! Chat soon!

Ok, I said I ws going to call it quits for a few days. I just watched the national news and saw how bad NJ is getting hit from Ida. I looked on the weather channel for Cape May. Strong winds and under state warnings, all kinds of warnings for Cape May. Keep our Coasties in thoughts and prayers.

I thought I would share my letter as well. My husband wrote that things there are very challenging, and that the 5am 'fire' drills on the cold pavement really suck. He also said that there are 2 really strick CC's, but one that is an alright guy. He sent his love, and said he really misses us, and even sounded a bit homesick. I was so grateful to just receive something real from him finally. The letter really helped me cope with him being gone from me and our little girl for so long. He reminded me that it is almost halfway over, and that time really fly's by there. He also mentioned that his bunk mate is a really great guy, and they have a lot to talk about because he is older like my husband. He didn't mention the recruits name...but only that he is 27 years old. I would really like to know who this is so I might get to know more about his buddy!

Does anyone know when the journal's are going to get started? I thought for sure there would be something by now....I noticed that there was never a journal for PAPA 180 or PAPA 181 either?! I don't know...maybe I am just being impatient!

Rose - are you from Missouri? I am still looking for the two families that Justen shipped out with from Kansas City.... and I know one of the guys had a little girl - my daughter played with her in the recruiters office.

No one knows why the journal was not posted last Tuesday, but we will now have to wait until next Tuesday. Someone said (I think it was on the FaceBook PAPA 182 page) that the past PAPA groups have been prior service companies.
Prior service companies are made up of members from other services that have decided to join the Coast Guard, and they are there for two or three weeks of refresher training. So I guess that meant they didn't need a journal! :-D

HI PAPA182 Family, Yes the weather in NJ was horrible yesturday but not as bad as the news made it. Strong wind was the worst part of it. I am north of Cape May and they do get more storm surge then we do but I figure this is what they signed up for. Keeoing myself very busy. It makes time fly. Happy Day to all.

Kindy,
I am the Rose you met in KC...but we are from Wichita, KS not MO. Your daughter Taylor played with our little girl Emma. I am so glad to finally talk to someone familiar! I hope that Justen is doing alright and has sent home only good thoughts. Only 4 more weeks....we only have to hold on a little longer :)

Hi Papa 182 families, Does anyone have information on graduation in reference to how many people can attend per recruit? How many tickets is each recruit allowed? Does their five-day leave begin on graduation day? Thanks, Kim :-)

PRcoastiemom said...

Kim, I am pretty sure I read somewhere that leave starts the day after graduation but they are free to leave immediately after the ceremony. Also, I don't think there is a limit on the number of people attending. There may be a reservation required for the 0830breakfast if you plan on attending that and there is a $5/person charge. Hope this helps. I say the more the merrier! Our kids deserve to be celebrated!

Hey, SR Cassidy - your uncle and I miss you, and are very proud of you. We think of you often, and can't wait to read the journal. Be strong and be well, we love you, Aunt Gina & Uncle Mike

Thank you PR Coastiemom - The infomation you provided does help. A friend's son is in NOvember 182 - he wrote home saying the graduation lasts about 45 minutes, but wasn't sure on the number of people who can attend. I think more the merrier for our children as well to honor their important accomplishment. In case I missed any of your previous postings, where are you from? We are from upstate New York so the ride shouldn't be bad as long as the weather holds up. Kim
