Hello families and friends of Papa 183! Welcome! My son is a Whiskey 182 graduate and is now preparing to graduate from MLE "A" school. Many familes get through the weeks by a facebook page for their recruits' company. It's a great way to "meet" others with recruits in the same company, ask questions and get answers, share info and thoughts and just survive the 8 weeks. For an idea you can search "USCG Oscar 183" or any previous company on the search line of facebook to see what it's like and then you can start a group page for USCG Papa 183. Joining facebook is easy, too, if you haven't done so yet.

Becca,
We sure are glad to here that you made it to Cape May. Everyone here is extremely proud of you and your goals that you have set for yourself. The only real thing different around here is that the lawn grew an inch and it is hot as you know what around here. Aurora and Joseph miss you and can not wait to be able to call you a "Coastie". Joseph says that he does not have anyone to swim with, but you know JoJo;that is always the case. Your Mom has not hit the ground yet; she is so proud of you. Your courage is admirable.
We all hope that you are in the best of health and that your training is going well.

Hugs and kisses from Mom, Dad, Aurora and Joe.

We Love You and God willing we will see you 07/30/2010 .

Does anyone know the name of the company and hall that just arrived this past Tuesday? Also, approximately how long is it usually before this information is received? In addition, if I send mail without that information will it still reach my husband?

John said...

Tiffany I still haven't heard anything either. If I do I will let you know. I am hoping sometime soon as it has been a few days.

Unknown said...

I'm guessing that the company formed on 6/15 will be Quebec 183 (Q 183)

John said...

I figured that but did not want to get her in trouble. Would they just hold the mail until the rest comes or should I wait to receive "official" word of the address?.

riCKy said...

Good Luck Eda, I know you can make it. When it gets tough, just tough it out. It's all in your mind so if you believe you can make it then you can totally do it!

Unknown said...

Ok thanks john! Email me at ladyperris_06@yahoo.com and I will let you know if I hear of anything either!!!

Unknown said...

I have been sending mail without the company or hall info just the name address and grad date, do you think this mail will still reach them? And if anyone knows the company and hall formed 6/15/2010 please let me know asap!!!

jbsb said...

A letter will come in mail next few days telling you the mailing information. The company name suppose to be in it.

Mark A. Sanchez said...

Go Becca !!!!

A friend, driving home from a fishing trip in northern Michigan with his boat in tow, had engine trouble a few miles inland from Lake Huron. He didn't have a CB radio in his car, so he decided to use his marine radio to get help. Climbing into his boat, he broadcast his call letters and asked for assistance.

A Coast Guard officer responded, "Please give your location."

"I'm on Interstate-75, two miles south of Standish."

The officer paused, "Could you repeat that?"

"I-75, two miles south of Standish."

A longer pause. Then an incredulous voice asked, "How fast were you going when you hit shore?"

Families of Papa 183. As of Tuesday June 22, your letters, having been received at TRACEN Cape May, have not been distributed to the recruits per the Company leadership's decision. There may be some logic behind this with-holding of critical family and friend support in the name of some bizarre sense of motivation, but even prisoners of war are entitled to their mail in a timely fashion. This is barbaric and not the same smart, morale focused Coast Guard I served in.

Tiffany said...

wavepony... this is really upsetting to hear. Can you tell me how you got this news? I know myself and other for PAPA 183 have been chatting a lot about it on FB.

Tiffany said...

Ryan...

Graduation will be here before you know it (COME ON JULY 30th :) Keep doing a great job and know that I'm always thinking of you. I miss and love you to pieces babe.

Tiff

wavepony said...

Tiffany
Heard this directly from a Papa 183 member. Slight correction needed for absolute accuracy. The letters have been distributed to the company recruits -- they are not allowed to open them.

wavepony said...

I am not on FB and so cannot join in your chat, but my report is accurate as of yesterday evening. I have two recruits from my family at Cape May right now.
No doubt there is some kind of military-minded discipline logic behind it, but it is misguided and it leaves recruits who may be struggling without a crucial support system that could be the difference in their success.

samkitty said...

Wavepony,
Thanks for the clarification. At least they know we are sending letters.

Recruits have been receiving mail and sending mail. Parents posting on Facebook are all reporting have received mail.

Sgt Julie Love (Ret) said...

Hey everyone - I hope you can meet us on the Facebook page USCG Papa 183. It is much easier to converse back and forth and you can also see all of the pictures and videos that are posted.
As for the mail - in the first few weeks the recruits are extremely busy and exhausted. Many times the CC's will not let them open their mail until Sundays during divine hours. The recruits have very little free time, espcially in the beginning. The CC's are really good people. They don't do anything without a purpose. When the recruits are exhausted at night, the CC's don't want them spending time reading letters and then being upset because they are so homesick. But they DO want the recruits to know you are writing. So they let them have the mail and tell them they can read them on Sunday's during divine hours. The recruits don't understand a lot in the beginning and typically feel frustrated and homesick and often wonder if they really wanted to sign up for this. But it does get better!
Our Coast Guard is an amazing service to join. I am sorry someone hear is telling you discouraging things. Please trust that the CC's know what they are doing.
You can write to your recruits anytime and don't have to have the hall's name. There is only one Papa 183 and only one Quebec 183, etc.
Keep writing and keep encourating. They will be fine and by week 4 they will sound much happier and excited! No worries!

Megan, Dr. Fern wanted you to know he is excited for you. Because he owns a boat and is always out in the water, he did not want to get stopped and detained for 2 hours to have his boat inspected. So he called the Coast Guard himself and did a volunteer inspection. He now has the sticker for 2010. He is excited. He says hang in there, 8 weeks go very fast.

Mom says today is 3 weeks, on Tuesday and Friday will be the end of 4 weeks. Almost time to talk.

Hang in there!
