Pugil Stick Training?

Company Juliett 180 is the beta test company for the new recruit curriculum modernization that includes more physical fitness, more hands on training, and new instruction techniques.
Some of the new physical fitness and team building exercises include the pugil sticks, obstacle course and the Guardian Challenge. Company Juliett 180 is the first company to train with pugil sticks.
Pugil stick training is geared to build esprit de corps, physical endurance and courage. Members are paired up with shipmates who are approximately the same height and weight and then they battle for points in an open arena. The training is closely monitored by their company commanders and other instructors.
Master Chief Stephen Dykema, the Battalion Commander, asked recruits if they enjoyed the pugil stick training, of course they said "YES!". Then he asked them what they thought the pugil stick bouts would add to their readiness for the field. They said things like "more confidence if on a boarding team", "more self-discipline", "thinking on their feet", and "reacting in a situation when you don't know what is coming at you". We couldn't have asked for a better end-result.

RECRUIT JOURNALS
Journals are posted to USCGBOOTCAMP by close of business every Tuesday. The first journal for each company is posted in week three of training.
If a journal entry is not posted, it means one of two things, the company is in week one or two of training or the Web master did not receive a submission.
The journals were created to provide family and friends with a peek into the lives of their recruits. The recruit historians try to document the experiences of the company not individual recruits.
We hope you enjoy reading the journals and experiencing Coast Guard Recruit Training through the eyes of our Guardians in the making.
This is an official United States Coast Guard posting for the Public's information.

Thanks for the post about the pugil stick training. I watched the recruits this morning, and they really seemed to enjoy the session. They all demonstrated courage, professionalism, and motivation when they faced off in the ring. Can't wait to see how they do next week.
Man, why couldn't they have done that when I went through? (Uniform-136)
I am so proud that my son is part of the "beta" test of the pugil stick training and I SWEAR I saw him in the video! Thanks for keeping we parents so much in the loop as to what our young adults are experiencing throughout their basic training! It's making the weeks go by with lots of interest and LESS worry!
Hello up there from Florida Grandparents. The video was great and the Juliette-18 entries so good to read. Please PLEASE can you show a log or pictures or maybe a video of MARK-180 Company? You give family the chance to share into each units 8 weeks there and it means so much. Yes, I realize it is alot to ask but so much appreciated if allowed.
Thank you
Thank you so much for showing the video of the pugil stick training. I'm POSITIVE that I saw my son. The blogs and video keep us parents in the loop and make the 8 weeks go by much faster.
Thanks again!
Ah yes, pugil sticks. I have fond memories *chuckle* of this when I was at Parris Island. Good times. LOL
It's nice to see Cape May giving it a go.
