QUEBEC 182 FAMILIES:

Our son just graduated from KILO 182 and can answer questions you have while we still can. If you need a place to stay for graduation try the MADISON AVE BEACH CLUB MOTEL. We were very satisfied and it was only $61 per night with a 2 night minimum. It had a refrig., microwave , sink, two double beds and our friends even had a stove in their room. It
was well managed and modern. All the hotels are near the base because Cape May is a small town but neat, clean and well kept. There are no "chain" hotels or restaurants but everything is VERY nice.

Reccommendations on when we should start looking for flights? Flying in from Long Beach, California which airport should we fly into?

SR Smith,
Keep pushing forward. We are all so very proud of you and miss you very much!

momendad said...

"Westcoastmom"

Atlantic City is closer than Philadelphia. As long as your recruit doesn't get "rephased"
(pushed back) because of medical reasons, getting tickets in the fourth week is a good time.

Anonymous said...

to all the people coming to Cape May for 12/22- the flights are filling up rapidly and the airfare is going through the roof! I am coming from Tucson and we had to hurry and get locked in. It appears that its pretty cheap to go out there but expensive trying to get back....

Liverpool MOM said...

Keep up the tempo SR Pistella !
Its gonna be one amazing day and well woth the journey - I decided to come in a day or two early in case of drama at the airports flying in from the uk via the milkmans run - going out of manchester, through london and amsterdam and toronto to Newark, back through atlanta...wahooo! Make me proud baby, and to those lucky moms and dads stateside go with Atlantic City, only 45 minutes from the base...

Unknown said...

SR Saengpradap!!!! I love and miss you soooo much wifey!!! Your my everything and I can't wait to see you on dec 22nd!!! Keep your head up and continue giving 110%!!!

To families:
We live in the greater philadelphia region... Atlantic city is closer but will be more expensive than philadelphia intl. Cape may is roughly 2hrs from phila intl.. But, atlantic city is def a better city for fun and excitement if you are looking to celebrate with your new gaurdian..

There are also many small hotels in cape may that you may want to consider as they will be much less expensive then staying in atlantic city...
Although, about 20 miles outside of cape may there are your normal chain hotels...I.e. Days inn, motel 6. Etc.
Late december is when it begins getting fairly cold here in the northeast, so I would def recommend comming prepared (jackets, pants, sweaters) It is my understanding that our new gaurdians will have 5 days of leave (paid vacation) before they need to report to there next training and/or duty station, so plan accordingly.

If any of you are military: active, reserve, retired... There are a few bases within a 2hr drive from cape may and you may consider staying at a base lodging facility to save some cash...

I am active military and am willing to answer any questions anyone may have.. Just let me know.
Also, please remember to make sure you all purchase refundable airfare as there are many reasons your recruit may not graduate on time(recycled). Such as injury, illness, failure to meet training/administrative requirements.

Congratulations to everyone and i wish you all good luck in the future!

Joseph
Sgt/USMC

I miss you and can't wait till you come home. Nana and I are playing with my blocks. Mommy is searching for x-mas gifts for you so what do you want for x-mas? Mommy is tired, nana is tired, and I am in my zone.

I get to go to school tomorrow and I don't like to leave when mommy picks me up cause I have way to much fun when I am there. Papa Joe can't wait to see you.

I ask mommy everyday if you are home yet and she tells me not till x-mas so I get really excited. I know x-mas will be really fun this year since I have my own little 2 ft x-mas tree in my room already. Nana bought it for me and mommy bought the decorations so I decorated it myself. Now I am eating raisins sitting by mommy.

I just want to let you know that I am having fun, growing again, and learning to read and already know all my abc's and colors.

Love You,
Princess Kayla

P.S. Mommy is missing you very much also.

Hang in there kid, your halfway there. We think about you every day. See you on the 22nd.

Dave Neps said...

I wrote this a few years ago, but I wanted to share it with SR Workman and Quebec 182.

It was 4 o'clock in the morning. I spend a lot of time on the Fox and Illinois rivers at this time.
I usually feel real comfortable kayaking in the dark. But today the rivers were up, dirty and a little scary-looking for a guy paddling a boat that weighs only 55 pounds.

I laid my kayak down on the boat ramp, nose pointed into the water, and wondered what the heck I was doing going out in that stuff. A voice inside my head told me to put the boat back on the 4Runner, go home and take Tommie for a nice, long walk.

I hesitated, but then I heard another voice say, "Eddie would go."

Legend of Eddie

If you have ever been to Hawaii, you might have come across Eddie. He shows up on cars, surf boards, mopeds and just about anywhere imaginable.

His appearance is usually on a sticker -- a simple two-color affair, no decoration, and only three words: Eddie Would Go.

As a collector of stickers, I noticed them my first day in Hawaii. My friend whom I was visiting in Oahu had one in the back window of her van.

I asked her about this Eddie guy. The Eddie on the sticker is a reference to legendary big-wave surfer Eddie Aikau.

Eddie, a native Hawaiian, grew up in the '60s living the life of a waterman: paddling, sailing, swimming and surfing. He worked as a lifeguard at Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu, which is considered by many to be the most dangerous lifeguarding job on the planet.

When the surf's up on the North Shore, the offshore waves can reach heights of 25 to 30 feet. The inshore break can be as high as 12 feet, making just walking in the water a dangerous proposition.

In the early days of surfing, Eddie combined his incredible talents as a swimmer and his surfing ability to become one of the best big wave surfers in the world. The locals will tell you that there were better surfers, but there wasn't anyone who had the skills in the water that Eddie did.

Eddie would go

These skills made him fearless. When others would back off on a wave or wouldn't venture out, Eddie would always go. Throw in the fact that Eddie was a native in a sport dominated by haoles -- a somewhat derogatory term for Caucasians -- and you have the makings of a legend.

The sad part of the Eddie Aikua story is it was his love of the water and life that led to his ultimate death.

In March of 1978, Eddie was a crew member of a Hawaiian voyaging canoe that swamped during a stormy night at sea. With his fellow crew members' lives at risk, Eddie volunteered to paddle a surfboard that they were towing 20 miles to the little island of Lanai for help. Ironically, the crew was rescued the next morning, but they never found Eddie.

It's a great story. There are times in our lives when we question going. Usually it is fear that holds us back. Eddie knew fear, but he overcame it with skill, humor and an insatiable love of life.

QUEBEC 182 Families:

Did you know that your recruit will not be able to read these blogs? It's true. Our son graduated from KILO a few weeks ago and never saw these blogs. They were too busy with uniform inspection and cleaning squadbays and writing letters home to find time to read these. However, on the off chance that they will plod through these 230 plus blogs when they have their on-base liberty in week six, keep the positive comments coming. They also have a chance on their off-base liberty in week seven to do so , but usually they want to hang with their fellow recruits and pig out on soda and snacks and watch TV and football, etc. This is really more of a way for families of recruits to communicate with eachother. Do you have a place to stay for graduation? Check out the Nov. 16 blog above and some of the other blogs from PAPA and OSCAR to see how they are communicating. If you have question that we can answer, please ask while we still can. GOOD LUCK TO QUEBEC 182 !!!!

SRMattesMom said...

That is true about the blogs. I have printed them off and included them in my letters to my daughter so she might share them with any recruits whose name she recognizes. She asked me to keep them coming, that they are a great hit!!

I know you and your company are working hard--only 28 more days!Every time I see movie previews I think of you and wonder which ones you're going to be dying to see...earn that liberty time so you can go to theater! Can't wait to hear from you love.

SR DiNicola-Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you all get to go for a nice meal (is the chow hall good?) and a little break. I love you and miss you.Hope you get a chance to read the blogs over the holiday.Keep up the good work:it is worth every push-up! See you soon! MomXXXXOOOO

Are we sure that we can print out these blogs and send them in the mail? My understanding was nothing except letters and cards can be sent to the recruits. Courtney (SR Workman)wrote to me and said do not send even a newspaper clipping as they can get in trouble for that. To be safe; I'm just rewriting the blogs in letters just to let her know that people are thinking about her. If anyone knows for sure; please let us know. Viv (aka SR Workman's Mom)

SRMattesMom said...

Vivalaviv,
I have sent them to my daughter a couple of times and she hadn't got into any trouble that I am aware of. I know someone sent her a music card and while she didn't get into trouble, they wouldn't let her keep it. That is as much as I know. But aren't these just like sending a lot of letters at one time? That is how I looked at it. Anyway, maybe someone else who knows more could clarify it for us.

I just printed out the pages that refered to my kid and highlighted those entries, out them in a regular envelope. I wrote on the outside the contents with a note that if it was "unauthorized" to just chuck the envelope so no one got in trouble. Hope that is ok. The last thing our people need is more grief!

Hey does anyone know about graduation and how parents, spouses, etc can find out specifics like what time to arrive and do we just show up at the gate or do we have to let someone at Cape May know we will be there? Any information would be helpful. Viv.

Vivalaviv said...

Hey Kody's Girl,
I've only heard from my recruit once at the very beginning of boot camp. When I talked to her at Thanksgiving; it sounds like they have very little time for personal tasks like letter writing. I think the company commanders have the recruits so busy all the time that it's hard to squeeze in time for letters. We're getting close to graduation time so hang in there!
