Zulu families: Rest assured your recruits are good hands. OS1 Ricketts is awesome. She is hard as nails but loves them to pieces. She commands respect and gives it in return. My son graduated with Mike182 company and she was instrumental in his success.
Congratualtions and good luck. If anyone has any questions feel free to email me. I've been weher you are now and would have loved an experienced person to lean on and communicate with. Good luck and God bless.

Coastiemombarker, would u know if there are any discounts for families for Airfare and hotel accommodations? And, do u know when the recruits are able to read these comments?

thanks much for all ur help.

coastiemombarker said...

Peggy,
The recruits don't actually "get " to read these blogs. They will get computer privileges in week 5 or 6 and they have to search it out on their own during computer time.
So if they don't look for them they will never see them. Don't print them and send them in the mail, they will be confiscated.
Congress Hall is very accomodating for graduation. Airlines do not usually extend the military discount to family only your recruit. Write often they love mail day! Be patient for information. Know they are in good hands. Pray for their success. BE PROUD!

Greetings to ZULU 182 family and friends.

Hubby and I are the proud parents of SR A.J.Kalinofski-Green.

We will keep your new recruit and your family in our daily prayers.

I have a feeling that these journals and blogs will be the high-lite of the week for most of us.

FYI, I have set up a new Twitter account as StudioBeaz. I thought it might be fun for quick tweets for any and all family members and friends.
Come Tweet about #ZULU182 or any other Company that has been thru boot camp or is in Cape May now #USCG.

I'll just bet we can also learn alot from CoastieMomBarker!...you must have been reading my mind...I was just thinking "I'll copy these and mail 'em", but NO!...see, we need CoastieMomBarker.

Coastiemombarker, thank-you so much for this information. I have written to my son already, hoping that he received it today, I looked up the address last week and mail it out to him..hmmm...u think mom is having a hard time letting go! lol

The no contact is hard!

I am so proud of all of these young men, they are so brave!

I pray for all of them, what good souls they will be.

CoastieMomBarker, if you don't mind:...where did your Coastie end up going? How much time did he have between boot camp and his first day on the job?

Anonymous said...

I was wandering if anyone knows whether or not if the recruits will be on leave immediately after graduation or will they need to stick around? I am trying to make travel plans to accommodate for my sons travel to his duty station. I know they said that they get 5 days of leave before his report date. I just want to make sure to allow for as much family time as possible.

Studio and becbec00:
Your coastie will have 5 days
beginning the day after graduation to report to his/her 1st duty statin UNLESS he/she has been give guarantee "a" school. The "a" school varies based on the availabilty at the time of graduation. Some of our guys going to "a" school didn;t go until Jan 1and we graduated Nov 24. The recruits are allowed to leave Cape May immediately after graduation ceremonies (we hung around alittle to look at the barracks and PX).
Mike 182 graduation was Tues Nov 24, my son reported to duty Mon Nov30
on the USCGC Abbie Burgess in Rockland, Maine. He did not requst Maine specifically but he did want the Northeast (District 1-- I think). It sems that they try to get the recruits one of their top 3 choices. Good luck Zulu. If anyone talks to their recruit have them tell OS1 Ricketts, Sacco says hi from Miane.

ZuluWife23 said...

coastiemombaker are you living in Maine too? I live in Abbot Maine with my parents until Josh graduates then I am moving with him of course. Did you fly to graduation? I am thinking of flying from Maine to Philidelphia then renting a car and driving to Cape May. How long would you say graduation is? Could we cetch a late flight out of Phili on graduation day? U have no idea how much it means to us to talk to someone who has been through this! Thank You.

Thank-you for helping all of us.

Zulu wife: I am in Florida, that is where we lived when my son enlisted. We drove from Atlantic City to Cape May, it is only about 35 minutes. If you fly to Philly give yourself at least 3 hours to make the drive to Cape May. The recruits are allowed to leave as soon as the cermonies are over. They completed the cermonies by 1pm. You could be on the road by 2pm. If anyone has any questions you don't want to post feel free to email me at coastiemombarker@comcast.net.
I wish the USCG assigned a family mentor to each incoming company so it would put families at ease knowing they had a resource assigned. They assing the company a mentor, families should get one too. But until then, I;m happy to hel in anyway I can. Hang in htere Zul it really will fly by. Soon you will be at graduation.

Coastiemombarker,
Thank you so much for the info. That really helps with making travel plans. We were planning on sticking around NJ for a day to see a little of the sights. But I would much rather spend the time hearing about all that the recruits have learned.

SGT. Julie Love (Ret),
Thanks for your support and info. You must be so proud of your son. I of course have no way of knowing if your son will have any contact with my son, but please give him my sincere gratitude for passing on his skills and knowledge to the young recruits that are stepping up to protect our Homeland. I am proud to serve under the same flag.

Good luck to all the recruits of Zulu-182, hope you all survive those chilly winter winds. And special warm thoughts go out to my favorite recruit SR Kammler, RJ. All your San Diego family is praying for you. Stay STRONG Girl, You Rock!!!

Thx to coastiemombarker & Sgt.Julie sharing your words of experience, they're comforting. I admit it's hard being out of contact with my daughter. But reading your posts helps me imagine what she's experiencing and better know what to expect.
Thx for that.

Do you have any suggestions for parents who live on the west coast and can't make it out for graduation?

coastiemombarker said...

SanDiegoLolo:
BUY the video. They have a professional photographer video tape all of the graduations.
My father was unable to join us and was extremely disappoitned. My son bought the video and sent it to him to thank him for all he did for him to help him get through.
It was $40 and worth every penny.
My Dad still watches it every Sunday. He says it's better than Sunday football.

Does anyone know if they limit how many people can attend graduation for each recruit? There are four of us, and my son's girlfriend and his best friend would also like to attend. Also, how dressed up should we be? I know the recruits will be in dress uniform, but what do family and friends usually wear? Thanks for all the info!

Unlimited guests for graduation. The more the merrier. Wear comfortable shoes and what I would call "church clothes". Nice slacks and dress shirt for men, nice slacks/skirt and blouse for ladies.
There is a brisk wind so take a jacket. Congratulations, you'll be there before you know it.

Right now you are missing your recruit more than you ever thought you could. But they are doing some amazing stuff in bootcamp. They have joined the most incredible family in the Coast Guard. The CC's are really good leaders and take very good care of their recruits. You have no worries where that is concerned. If you don't get a phone call, that means your recruit is doing fine. No injuries or illnesses, etc. I hope you all join us on the Facebook pages, too. It is much easier to write back and forth there! if you don't have a facebook page it is really easy to start. Just go to www.facebook.com and sign up. Then come and find us!

Hey Evan & all the Zulu 182 crew:
As we've conveyed in our letters, we love you, miss you, are proud of you and are praying for your continued safety, strength (physical, mental and emotional) and determination. You have what it takes; remember that -- when you start to question yourself -- you just have to dig deeper. Keep digging, and you will find that same enthusiasm and excitement that prompted you to choose the USCG months ago. Reach out to your mates; they surely are experiencing the same feelings as you. Celebrate one another's victories; comfort one another in times of defeat. We SO look forward to seeing your smiling face and hearing your voice SOON. Stay strong, Evan. We love you.
