Welcome aboard! I am the Mom of a Mike 182 graduate. (Nov 26-seems like yesterday) The recruits don't get to see these comments until about week 6 or 7, and only if they take the initiative to look for it online when they get computer privileges. WRITE TO THEM EVERYDAY! My son said "mail" was the highlight of their days/nights/weeks. They all get very close and share news/stories with the entire company. Stay strong, be proud. Any questions, feel free to email me. coastiemombarker@comcast.net
(8 weeks really does fly by after about week 3)

Welcome families of India 183!! My son is a Whiskey 182 graduate and I would like to suggest that you all join the facebook page set up for USCG Mike 183. Type USCG Mike 183 in the search line of Facebook.com and you will find the group page. If you don't have a facebook account it's easy to do. This is a great way to help you through these eight weeks, too!

Well done. That sense of pride in your company and it's accomplishments as a team is one of the primary objectives of boot camp. That spirit will sustain you to your first command and beyond. For those of you who really feel it strongly, it can and does become a worthy and fullfilling life style. The PO1s and CPOs you have as Company Commanders are the kind of people who got it. Learn everything you can from them and make them proud.
To JTH, we love you and miss you and are waiting anxiously to hear where you are headed for duty. Keep up the good work.

Hey Chris (Rogers), Hope all is well. Just wanted to let you know we all miss you. Your dad's food bill has gone down drastically, since you've been at boot camp. I'm sure that the fly fisherman of Boca is missing his fly fishing buddy--he's starving without you catching all the fish. Fishing in Jax has been great--that is until I snapped my finger in half from a dog bite- tell you that story later... David left Guam the other day and is heading for the "Gulf". Stay safe, can't wait to see you and hear all about your boot camp "sea stories". Cami says hey. Later --- Navy Dave

Good evening friends and family of M-183! My name is Lieutenant Commander Bill Field and I have been assigned as the mentor for M-183. This is a unique opportunity for me and one I take very seriously; the recruit training process is an arduous one and it challenges each and every recruit in unique ways.

The role of the mentor, as I see it, is to provide guidance, counseling and coaching to each member of M-183 so that they may obtain their ultimate goal of graduation and service within the United States Coast Guard.

I feel I’m in a unique position to provide this service. I myself attended boot camp in 1990 as a trainee and returned to Cape May some years later as a Company Commander. Seeing boot camp from “both sides of the fence” has given me a unique perspective on the overall training program - from both the youthful eyes of a trainee and from the eyes of a seasoned instructor.

I had the pleasure of meeting with the company last week. They are in good spirits, although homesick, but motivated and headed in the right direction. I will return to Cape May this weekend to meet with them again. I know I’ll be amazed at their transformation in such a short time as will you when the process is complete! I’ve also had the pleasure of meeting the Lead Company Commander for M-183, Chief Petty Officer Brannon. He is a true leader and I can assure you your loved ones are in good hands.

What can you do to help? Keep up the tremendous support! I can’t say enough about the support provided by loved ones while going through the recruit training process myself. A simple letter or post on this blog goes a LONG WAY in lifting the spirits of a boot camp recruit!

If you have any questions for me, please feel free to ask! I can’t guarantee I’ll have all the answers, but I’ll do my best to get you the information you seek. I’m looking forward to meeting many of you on July 8th as the Coast Guard welcomes its newest members into service.

Best Regards,
LCDR Bill Field

Lt. Commander Field,

Thanks so much for your update. I know the recruits love getting news and encouragement from us, but we're equally thrilled to get news of them! Thanks so much for what you're doing for them.

I also want to extend an invitation to join our USCG Mike 183 Facebook group, if you're a Facebook user. We've developed a real support community there as we deal with being on the outside of the boot camp experience. We would welcome your participation.

Again, thanks so much for updating us. It means alot.

Words cannot describe how proud I am of you and all your accomplishments. You are a courageous, motivated, driven man. I wish I could take away all the hard and painful moments you have had to experience in these last several weeks. You are my rock, my inspiration. TO ALL THE PARENTS/SPOUSES OF RECRUITS IN MIKE 183:
MY NAME IS FN FLORES AND I GRADUATED WITH DELTA-183. I HAD MEC BRANNON FOR A COMPANY COMMANDER AND I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THAT HE HAD THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON ME OUT OF ALL MY COMPANY COMMANDERS. HE IS A GREAT CC WITH A NO NONSENSE APPROACH TO LIFE AND HAS A "NOTHING IS EVER GIVEN TO YOU" WORK ETHIC. HIS REASONS FOR BEING A CC ARE SINCERE AND NOT BASED ON SOME SORT OF POWER TRIP. THIS IS WHY I BELIEVE THAT THE RECRUITS THAT COME OUT OF MIKE-183 WILL BE SQUARED AWAY AND THAT THE LOVED ONES OF OUR FUTURE COASTIES WILL HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.

VERY RESPECTFULLY,
FN FLORES, N.J.
USCG STATION SAN FRANCISCO

"It's a shame that we are unappreciated until we're needed...but that's what makes it a job for a Coast Guardsman."

FN Flores,

Thanks for your words of praise for CC Brennen. Speaking as one parent, I look forward to meeting him in a little over one week!

To the parents and family members here who don't participate in the CSCG Mike 183 Facebook group, a number of us decided to donate money to the Company Commanders Association (CCA)in honor of Mike 183. The CCA helps the community in various ways – food banks, sponsoring sports teams, clothing banks, shelters, beach clean-up, etc. Recruits participate as well; it’s one of the requirements, so you’re helping to directly benefit them as well as the community with your donation.

If you would like to participate, please do the following:

- Sign on to PayPal (https://www.paypal.com/) and click on the “Send Money” tab.

- Type in joshua.r. garza@uscg.mil and then the amount you want to donate (CC Garza is the treasurer for the foundation and his email is linked to the account).

- Click on the tab that says “Personal” – not Pay, and click the “Gift” spot.

- Once you donate, it lets you send an e-card to notify CC Garza of the gift. Be sure and specify that it’s for Mike-183.

- We’re going to ask CC Garza to keep track of donations so we can make a presentation on graduation day.

Thanks!

Barb Didrichsen, mother of SR James A. Nieman
