OCMom said...: Apparently they are doing alot of PT (physical training) and IT (intense training), so they are pretty tired, but working well as a team. There is also a forum at www.uscg.org where lots of parents and USCG members share info.; February 2, 2009 at 12:04 AM

Not sure why he can't get them on base but happy to send a "package" even if it only contains supplies. Hopefully on Tues pm or Wed we will have some info on website and some pictures. Sorry to tell you this but Don't send care packages. They are not allowed and will be taken away. Sorry. Our son is in Yankee 180. They are only allowed to write on Sunday morning during their "devine" hours as they call it. Tuesday afternoon and sometimes Wednesday are when the recruit journals are posted. My understanding is that they never see this. It is a great way for families and loved ones to share info though. Take time to read the past journals of other companies and you will get a feeling of what is going on during a particular week. It has been very helpful to our family.; February 2, 2009 at 8:27 PM

OCMom said...: My daughter said they can receive "Allowed Items Only". I suggest sending it in an envelope, not a box and without a letter. It will get opened. I sent a pair of underarmour bottoms. No word if she got those. I have also included with letters - stamps, pictures and a couple envelopes. Although they may be able to get these at the store, they may not have time. I am so proud of my son and to be able to be a part of this. It is nice to know that I'm not the only one really missing my Coastie.
My son says aside from being tired, they are learning that they have to count on each other. Become a team. I think that would help us parents too! Any info. we get & can share would be great. My son too seems to leave alot out at times.
I believe the date for graduation is not correct. We originally had info. that it was going to be the 13th. I hope they get this corrected soon I need to make flight arrangements.; February 3, 2009 at 6:58 PM

Coco said...: I agree with those who have said it's a guy thing. My boyfriend has written one letter and one postcard. Both are very vague. His mom and I on the other hand have probably written a total of 6 or 7 letters since receiving our first last friday.

I think the blogs have been great, so OCmom- your girl is doing just fine (I'm sure I don't need to tell you that:) Time alotted for extra duties such as Historian vary from company to company. Every company is run differently and the training to be a Guardian is much more critical than a blog for the families. We had nothing but snail mail when my husband went through. No contact with other families or comparing notes at all. Also photos are ok...no newspaper clippings, no printouts from internet, and photos must be "clean" obviously. We don’t know what goes on day to day but we all know we want to know that’s for sure. If you hear that someone has gotten numerous letters over the week and you have gotten none you begin to worry. You wonder what is going on with your loved one? Is he or she okay, is he or she doing their job, are they in trouble, etc? My father & father in law both served in the military, Navy and Marines, and both say your writing time is allotted and earned , so when I don’t get letter like others do I begin to worry. He also remarked how he has yet to receive any letters from me even though i sent the frist ones out over a week ago. is anyone else having this problem? does mail travel usually take this long? my husband was almost begging me for a letter so you can understand my concern to fix the problem asap. Dee2 said...: You can follow site links to local hotels in Cape May. We stayed at the Grand Hotel when my other son completed training 6 years ago, and have reservations now for the 13th. Nothing fancy, but the price was right!, Make sure if you are driving up the coast through the eastern shore to check the ferry schedule and get a reservation. The CG will send us more information a few weeks before with a list of some hotels.

*cgwife* said...: Hi Laurel- I am sure your husband has received a letter by now (his probably passed yours on the way out:) It is hard when we are so used to instant communication to have to wait for letters- I see you are from Texas so that might add an extra two days or so- I saw OCmoms profile said Ocean City NJ which is just 30 minutes from the training center so that is obviously much faster. I sent my husband self addressed stamped envelopes when he was in- that is allowable and saved him that extra step. I think some of the recruits don't write as much because it is harder to have their head "at home" rather than focusing on their goal of graduating and gettting out of there- so shining boots and ironing takes up more of their personal time. It's great to see that she has other Texans there also and all others. She grew up as an Army brat so can't claim to actually be from Texas (we are from all over), and she loves meeting people from all over. Her husband got a letter from her, (he is the designated letter receiver and distributor of info as she has only so many stamps and envelopes! He said she passed out from dehydration on day 2 and lost her voice from all the yelling 'Aye Aye Sir' on day 4! Yikes!! I believe she was given the honor of second in command of her unit/company? and also in charge of fire safety and evacuation! How awesome!!
Hope to meet some of you at graduation!! I can't wait. Stamped envelopes are good to send. I need to check to see if I can send bobby pins, from what I hear if they can't keep their hair back they have to get it cut..she may look quite different when I finally get to see her. thanks for the encouragement. i just got a letter from my husband today saying he received all my letters thus far. I could be wrong but I don't think Alfa 181 will get to make a call home until the 5th week and its only for a minute. They mentioned in the response that there were no pictures this week because the camera was damaged. We will all have to wait until next week. KcTeXas, that so amazing to hear that they got to know each other on the way there and someone to share the butterflies (probably terror!!) feelings!! Jade is a riot and even when things are horrible or crazy, that girl can laugh and smile and be uplifting to a deaf, blind, half asleep goat!! I'm sure they shared a nervous laugh or two before they went deaf from the Company Commander's getting on the bus screaming that they had 15 seconds to get off the bus and they just wasted 10!!!! I'm from the Dallas area, and we are making our flight reservations tomorrow!!! I know they are non-refundable but I am so confident that she won't have to do any extra week due to needing 'corrective training' that I'm ready!! As far as her wish list....I think she is going for Washington State or somewhere along the West Coast. She wanted to go where there wasn't a lot of other people trying to go to. She may have changed her mind since. I'll just have to wait and see.......
As far as I know her husband didn't get a phone call today unless she called him later after I spoke with him at 6ish CST, 7ish EST! I hope he did!!

So, so far we have SR Jade Cude (my daughter), SR Micheal ?? from Dallas, SR Michael ?? from El Paso, SR Graeber(OC moms daughter,our wonderful historian who gave an EXCELLENT journal blog this week!) and that's all the name's I know...........anyone else?? Let's get personal..... :))
Our Coasties are living, breathing, working, yelling, sleeping, running, running, running, running......well, you get the picture!, together, day in day out and will remember each other forever.......and I can't wait to shake each and everyone's hand at graduation.........

i enjoyed reading your response. your high spirits give me courage and emotional stamina. it's been tough without my husband around but the comments made by you and others are truly uplifting. i know they too are taken care of and doing well.i think getting family and friends involved to give blood is a wonderful idea. i would love to take part in it. i am totally on board!! i will encourage Michaael's family along with mine to also participate.

They have to make arrangements through the travel person at Cape May. I forget what that title is called who does that.......but they are strongly encouraged (otherwise known as ORDERED...hehehe...) to go through this officer. So once they get their orders or assignment, and if it's possible, it can be arranged through them to fly Mike home and then either fly from home to his next assignment or if it's close enough, to drive from his hometown if that's the plan and enough time. That's what Jade is planning on doing if possible. They graduate on Friday and are released after graduation. Their leave starts on Sat. She is trying to arrange a flight back around if not the same flight as her husband and arrive in Texas as early as possible on Saturday. Then depending on where they are assigned...she will either fly there and he will drive...or they'll drive together.

I made reservations at Congress Hall beautiful place about a mile and half from base. Not to costly think it was @117 a night for 2 beds. Hope we get there early to view the town (Ricky and I visited Cape May about 8 years ago what a quaint, historic, little town) but it doesn't look like we will be there early we have to wait until his brother's get out school. My husband retired after 20 years in the Coast Guard 4 years ago, so we know a bit of what is going on. This is great to have, we had nothing but snail mail. The Coast Guard is a tight family, and you meet so many wonderful families. My son will get to come home for four days, then head off to A school to be a cook. I've only received two letters, very brief - but am glad for those. I love the journal, I can't wait for the next one. I will be flying up with my parents for graduation. Hopefully we can get the word to him what flight it will be. I won't book until week 5, just to be safe - you'd be amazed at what they will revert you for, but it sounds like they are an amazing company that is already working well together.

flywatt said...: Hello everybody. I look foward to meeting you at Alfa 181's graduation. We should be recieving phone calls and more frequent letters during these final weeks of bootcamp. In the last few weeks, the recruits will find they've learned many shortcuts and working together will buy them more time. In order to fill this extra time, the company commanders allow the recruits to write letters, shine boots, and if they're lucky, make phone calls. I've recieved about 3 letters from my brother, and it seems the company came together rather quickly and is acting as one. We will also be learning soon where our loved ones will be stationed. This can be nerve-racking for the recruits. Some may get where they want to go, and some may be disappointed. It's important that we encourage and support them, help them realize that their first station will be short (approx 1 year), before they are off to A-School to learn their specialty rate. im curious about your comment regarding stations. as i understand it, recruits first get sent to A-school prior to being stationed. My husband is scheduled to report to A-school in California on April 27th, but i have yet to hear where we will be stationed. His recruiter told me that we should know by june or july of this year. Perhaps i am mistaken. could you clarify things for me? Also, good luck to your brother. charndeb said...: Hi Laurel, my husband retired from the Coast Guard and he went to a ship first to wait until the A school was available (a little over a year), and then was re-assigned after A school. My son enlisted with a food certification, he will be going straight to FS A school in Petaluma because that is the deal he made with the recruiter. Because FS (Food Service Specialist) is a shorter school (I think 12 weeks) anyone getting into that critical rate will normally get their name on a list and go when their name is up. Some schools only happen once a year, some schools are much longer. There are some rates that wait years til there are enough people to provide the training - it just depends.

Chanrdeb summarized it up pretty well. Critical rates take recruits straight to A-school from bootcamp. However, this must be established on contract before the recruit goes to bootcamp through the recruiter. Sounds like your husband has the guarenteed A-School set up already. If his A-School is in California, you will be going to Petaluma, CA. Lots of wine country down there, and about an hour from San Fransicso. There's plenty to do! Near completion of A-School, the students will be given a list of avaliable units. The students will list thier top picks, and submit them to the instructor who will slot them into the unit. I hope this answers your question!

flywatt said...: 3x5 photos should be allowed. Photos can be taken away from the recruits if they are inappropriate. When pictures are recieved, they can only be viewed during certain times. - Calls are generally made in the evening, anywhere from 8-10 pm.

- Everyone should be allowed to make calls, unless they've lost their privledges as punishment. Keep in mind, recruits are also encouraged to use some of their call time to gather info about their next stations.

- I'm not aware of any published list of recruits. However, if you are able to find one, I would probably go with names only (without the SR, SA, or SN). Some graduates may be a Seaman Apprentice or a Seaman after graduation, depending on their contracts established by the recruiter.

The resturaunt is a family oriented place. I imagine the gathering will last a few hours. I'm sure everyone is going to want to be well rested for the graduation ceremony! Cape May is a slow moving place during the winter. It thrives in the summer, but is pretty quiet in the off-season.

I've received a few letters and a post card, which go everywhere with me. Can you tell I'm proud of him? Many of you sound as though you have a military background or you've been through this before. But, this is my first time. All of my son's communications have been very positive which is such a relief for me, and he sounds very proud to be a member of A-181. My daughter Jade was one of the three that got a 100% on her midterm and got to make a call to her husband!! Wish I could've heard her voice but hubby has dibs!! She said everyone was doing really well and that they were all really working as a team now!!! I am so proud of all of them!!
We are flying in on Thursday the 12th, my son-in-law and his best friend to Philly, me and my youngest into Newark. I will be driving down with my sister from Newark airport, picking him up in Philly and then driving to Cape May!!! We have reservations at the Marquis De Lafayette Hotel and I can't wait!!

BTW, we had a total of 69 people donate blood on Friday!!! YEA!!! WE SUPPORTED OUR ALFA-181'S AWESOMELY!!!! Gonna try to post some pictures soon of the blood drive here in Texas..it was so kewl to know that that very same day, all 64 SR's and their commanders had done the same thing!! It definitely made me feel closer to my daughter and the Alfa's!!!

flywatt said...: Most recruits that have made it this far and have passed their physical fitness assessment should be in good shape to graduate. They would have to slip up pretty significantly to get held back.

I called a hotel in Cape May, and they suggested to wait until a few days before the graduation to book a room. The informed me rooms should be readily avaliable during this season (slow season).

I booked plane tickets last week for my family. If worse comes to worse, we will have to pay the re-booking fee ($115 with delta airlines), plus the price difference in the plane ticket.

Other companies form and march onto the field, they render honors, all kinds of cool stuff, lots of fun to watch. The indoor ceremony is just the graduating company, I believe. Yes we are from the area, Gloucester is about 20 minutes from home. He was guaranted it when he signed up. Our other son graduated from Maine Maritime Academy and is a tug boat captain working in New York. They both love the water and hope to start a fishing charter business. We made our arrangement to stay at Le Mere Motor Inn. It is about a 1/4 mile from the base. Price was good and we have AAA so we got a discount. If for any reason graduation is postponed they won't refund the money but will put it towards a future date.; February 22, 2009 at 12:49 PM

We are from the tropical part of the U.S. so we are looking forward to an outdoor graduation ceremony in NJ which I am sure is gorgeous. We were also getting letters asking why we weren't writing, but this Sat finally got a letter that said he got the first package we sent with all kinds of items that I didn't know he wasn't allowed to receive, but he said thanks for sending the package and the pictures. Hmm?! Anyway we are so proud of him - I get teary eyed when I read his letters about his company and team and when I read these blog entries that you guys are sending. Does anyone know how we will be able to keep from crying during the graduation?!

I did some asking around for you, and your daughter is going to Alameda, California. She will be stationed on the CGC Sherman. CGC Sherman is a 379' High Endurance Cutter. Absolutly AWESOME first unit (in my opinion). She will be doing patrols in South America and Alaska. Amazing oportunities to see places throughout the United States. I'm excited for her. I just got transfered from a West Coast Cutter, and it was the time of my life.

WOW!!! Thank you sooo much Flywatt!!! That looks so amazing!!! Above is a link to some photos of the beautiful cutter Sherman!!! Looks like she will be going to Alaska and Costa Rica quite often!!! Wish I could be a fly on the wall in her berth!!! So I must have heard her husband incorrectly as I thought he said Anaheim as opposed to Alameda!! I was just so excited that he got to hear from her!! It is wonderful to be able to finally look at where she will be, check out the local scene online, read about the history of the Cutter Sherman and Alameda, and Coast Guard Island!!! I am so excited I might pee my pants!!!!
And to JoRobby- I don't think there is any way not to cry at graduation!! You will be in fine crying company though!!!

gotta few questions concerning on base liberty. as i understand it, liberty has already begun. what do they get to do the entire week? since its called on base liberty, i assume they must remain on base the entire time? how do the phone calls work. i wonder, do they have the right to call whenever they want? my husband told me he would call me back this coming saturday so i guess calls any other time this week arent permitted. also you mentioned the graduation possibly taking place outside. i could have sworn that outside ceremonies arent held until may or so. maybe im wrong on that one. it would be wonderful if it were possible to attend an outside graduation.

flywatt said...: Shoshi- You're welcome ;) I always preach, the 378' High Endurance Cutters are the way to go! She's lucky! She'll have oportunities that no other boat class in the CG can offer! I was fortunate enough to circumnavigate the WORLD on the CGC Midgett. Amazing boats.

Laurel- In the Military, liberty refers to "time off". While in recruit training, trainees get 2 liberty days. Week 6 Saturday, and week 7 Saturday. Week 6 Saturday is on base liberty, week 7 is off base liberty.

I must apologize, I was a week ahead of myself when I said "we should be expecting calls this friday/saturday". This upcoming Saturday will be week 6 "on base liberty", the recruits should be able to make phone calls during this time.; February 23, 2009 at 2:56 AM

Second look at your post, I didn't answer all your questions. Liberty is only granted twice during the entire boot-camp experience (as mentioned in my last post). If the company is well organized, and there is time, the CC's may grant the company "phone time" in the evenings. Keep in mind, phone is a privledge in boot camp. Privledges can be lost for missing a whisker while shaving. . . (learned that one from experience).

As for the graduation ceremony, I'm not sure where it will be held. Like I said, I hope outdoors! The outdoor ceremonies are much more brilliant. I marched in 2 outdoor ceremonies, but my actual graduation ceremony was indoors because RAIN put a damper on it. So the ceremonies are subject to weather. . . If the weather is nice, I imagine the ceremony will be outdoors. Ultimately, its up to the command on the day of graduation.; February 23, 2009 at 3:29 AM

He turns 21 today - HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHARLIE :) As I mentioned before, he will be going straight to FS school after his 5 days leave. I received the official letter in the mail regarding graduation today. It doesn't have a date listed, but the quick note on the back of the paper from my son didn't mention any changes so I assume all is a go for the 13th. Laurel; could you add three more to the growing list going to the Ugly Mugg? That's in addition to the three for my group. Looking forward to meeting everyone and seeing my son.

They are working well as a team, but make some mistakes (they are human). SR GRAEBER specifically mentioned SR Cude, SR McNash, SR Phauts, SR Pavlik, SR Vicherello, SR LaFourtune, SR Bracklow, SR Fullenwider, SR Ensor & SR Herbert in her letter. I did get an email from a parent who said their kid is going to a Polar Ice Breaker in Seattle. I was stationed in Seattle for 3 years. The base is in the heart of downtown, across the street from the Mariners and Seahawks fields... If he is single, he will probably live on the cutter. Not bad for a first unit! They hear this a lot, especially from their company commanders when they first arrive in boot camp.

At this point in their training, as they've already made it really far and are almost finished, this phrase is probably used more as comic relief than anything.

I don't think you have anything to be concerned about, "Jacked up" is a phrase they'll hear probably for the rest of their Coast Guard career, and for the most part, they'll use and hear it in a joking manner.

mari said...: The directions that come up for me in Google maps were, (from the hotel to the base) East on Beach Ave, Left at Pittsburg Ave, then a Right on Pennsylvania Ave. and the base should be on the right. Looking at the map, it looks right. We are getting a map from AAA, as well as using a GPS, so by using 3 forms of directions, I hope we get there!! Also, at the hotel I am sure they will be able to provide ample directions to the base. The base is about 2 miles away from The Grand. I booked our room about a week ago. I’ve been knitting a lot lately, and there is a site that supports knitting for the various military troops (including U.S. Coast Guard) called the Ships Project. I also found another site that supports quilts, knitting, sewing Christmas stockings, writing letters, and other volunteer efforts called Citizen S.A.M. For anyone who does crafts or wants to help. Sure no problem, but I probably won't have it done until after he graduates because I am adding his graduation pic as the middle square. I have a embroidery machine so I am doing a basic quilt with lots of embroidery, downloaded alot of Coast Guard designs, my father(Navy Vet) says to add as much information as possible from Cape May. I think I am going to add the names of Alpha 181 in the sashings (which is the pieces that hold the blocks together). I am such a procrastinator but hopefully I will have by the time he heads out to A school or at least finishes LOL. Once I get the picture it shouldn't take me that long to put it together. I did quilt however for his girlfriend that he wanted me to do for her that was for Valentine's since he couldn't be with her. RECRUIT JOURNALS

Journals are posted to USCGBOOTCAMP by close of business every Tuesday. The first journal for each company is posted in week three of training.

If a journal entry is not posted, it means one of two things, the company is in week one or two of training or the Web master did not receive a submission.

The journals were created to provide family and friends with a peek into the lives of their recruits. The recruit historians try to document the experiences of the company not individual recruits.

We hope you enjoy reading the journals and experiencing Coast Guard Recruit Training through the eyes of our Guardians in the making.
