Friends and Family of FOXTROT 181,

Please allow me a brief moment to introduce myself, my name is Senior Chief Petty Officer Steve Carleton, I am a Public Affairs Specialist assigned to the Fifth Coast Guard District in Portsmouth, Va. I have been in the Coast Guard for 18 years and volunteered to be a Company Mentor for FOXTROT 181.

My duties as a Company Mentor include visiting the recruits a minimum of three times during their 8-week training cycle, to talk to them about what life is like in the Coast Guard once they leave Training Center Cape May, and to answer questions they may have about life in the Coast Guard. I will also be the guest speaker at their graduation on April 17, and look forward to meeting some of you at the graduation events.

This past weekend, I made my first visit to FOXTROT and was impressed at how well they are doing after their second week of training. As can be expected, some of the FOXTROT members are receiving some one-on-one motivational training that only a Company Commander can provide. I can assure you that Petty Officer Sutton, Chief Petty Officer Dendy and Petty Officer Ross are working hard to motivate and train the men and women, your loved ones, of FOXTROT for the challenges they will face in the Coast Guard once they leave Cape May behind.

I spent nearly three hours talking to them and answering questions on Saturday morning, followed by lunch before I returned home, their questions ranged from, ‘what can I expect to do at my first unit?’ to ‘how did the Flyers do last week?’

I will be making another visit to see FOXTROT the weekend of March 28-29, and hoping to go on a Company Run in formation with them outside the gates of Training Center Cape May. By the time I see them again, FOXTROT will have received their orders and will be full of questions about specific units and locations.

FOXTROT is seeking all the kind words and letters you can give them, so please take the time to drop them a card or letter, mail call is one activity they all look forward too. I will be more than happy to pass along words of encouragement from you to them, please feel free to drop me a note at stephen.j.carleton@uscg.mil

We missed our daughter's call on Sunday around 11:00, we are just sick about it. I carried my phone EVERYWHERE with me, but for some reason did not hear it ring. Todays' (last) journal brought tears to my eyes. What a journey these kids have been on!!
We have all been counting down the weeks, the days, and now we're down to hours!! I don't even have words to describe my feelings.
I talked to my SR last Sat. and she said "Honestly, Mom, if I had my shipmates here w/ me, I wouldn't mind staying an extra week".
I took that to mean that not only is F-181 a team, they are FAMILY and how cool is that?
F-181- you are our SUPERSTARS!!!

I, too was moved by this last journal entry. A beautiful piece of writing that is to be commended. Initially, I was hoping for more 'details' about the week, but was pleasantly surprised by the emotion and sincerity. No words can express our pride and appreciation for all of the men and women of F181. I look forward to shaking their hands and telling them personally. And, of course a big hug and a kiss for our own SR Stockton, C.
