RECRUIT JOURNALS
Journals are posted to USCGBOOTCAMP by close of business every Tuesday. The first journal for each company is posted in week three of training.
If a journal entry is not posted, it means one of two things, the company is in week one or two of training or the Web master did not receive a submission.
The journals were created to provide family and friends with a peek into the lives of their recruits. The recruit historians try to document the experiences of the company not individual recruits.
We hope you enjoy reading the journals and experiencing Coast Guard Recruit Training through the eyes of our Guardians in the making.

Morgan - everyone says HI and WE LOVE YOU!
Hey Travis, I read the journals and it sounds like you are working hard and staying focused. I just wanted to add something about teamwork that I have learned since that is what you and your fellow team mates are working on. The thing to remember is that all of you are working towards the same goal. So maybe in the heat of the moment or in a crunch time situation things are said, don't focus on the tone it was said or the way it made you feel, instead focus on what that person is needing or wanting you to do. So much time is wasted on arguing and becoming defensive. Besides once you achive your goal all the harsh words are forgotten and all you feel is great pride in what you achived as a team. Keep up the good work.
Don't worry be happy wifey loves you always all day every day

You are our Love. So proud.

Whiskey 181 - Looking forward to reading your blog this week to see how everything is going. How did your 1st Independence Day feel as a USCG? Thanks to all of you for choosing to serve our country.
Keep Focused
Hello Charlie,
I hope this finds you well (as well as can be expected). Reading the posted journal entries takes me back to my own boot camp experience and even BUD/S. In all such cases, what begins as a somewhat disorganized splattering of individuals will, through hard work, close attention to detail, practice, plus the usual blood, sweat and tears, ultimately become a finely honed team. Stay focused and it will happen. Kudos to the USCG for creating this interactive method of comms (great idea!). I have not received any mail from you, but I went ahead and provided your address, etc. to family members. Perhaps you sent something to Mom. She is still in Spain scheduled to return 070809. Keep the ball in sight. I love you - Dad
Whiskey 181 - hope you all had a Happy 4th of July and enjoyed the celebration at Cape May. Morgan - we got your letter and just wanted you to know that we are very proud of you both individually and as part of Whiskey 181. Work together as a team and you can accomplish anything. Look out for each other and remember that you work as one. Can't wait for graduation, miss you like crazy!!!
Know that you all are glad to be hitting the halfway point. Stay focused on the goal - bonding together as a team and friends. This will be a special time in your lives. TEAM work will get you all through this. We - your families - are SOOOOO proud of you.
Looking forward to seeing you in August. Time is moving on - Keep up the good work. Love and prayers.
Whiskey 181 you looked wonderful at the Sunset Parade! We are lucky to live in NJ and were able to attend. You marched in synch, stood tall and worked so well together. John, dad and I were so proud of you and all of Whiskey 181Keep up the good work! Can't wait to see you at the August 2nd parade!
Whiskey 181 - Team work will get you through any challenge that is put before you. Hold your heads high and continue to grow and learn as a unified group. Everything you do every single day is a learning experience and opportunity. Have faith in yourselves and in one another.
Chase - we love you and are so very proud of you. Keep pushing forward and never forget the goal.
W-181
The journal this week shows peaks and valleys but it appears that you all are learning that teamwork and perseverance will help all to achieve their goal of becoming "Guardians". Keep working towards this common goal and it will be achieved. PO Garcia gave very good words to live by on 7/3-
"everyone one of you have something inside that would get you through anything". This is so very true because you would have never made the choice to become of member of the CG without that special something inside. This is what makes you all unique and what is also will help you to your common goal of Graduation. Remember this every night and should you have a bad day with much "incentive" training start the next day with a clean slate and a positive attitude. You will be successful!!!
Work as a TEAM and remember you are all in our thoughts and prayers and we are VERY proud of you.
Coastie Mom Ohio
Whiskey-181:
I just finished reading your Week 03 Journal and I was impressed. Keep your focus on the goal, work hard individually and as a team and overcome the individual differences you might have. Once you have done that you will be surprised at how things seem to fall into place.
God Bleess each of you for your service to our Nation. Freedom is a costly venture.
Love yourselves and each other, for who know what may befall you and who you may need to pull you out.
Fair Winds and Following Seas, from and old Marine.
Gibson, Travis - Hey brother! Basic is Basic...Good days and bad ones, but remember you've already been through Marine Corps boot...there is nothing you can't do - nothing you can't overcome -nothing you can't achieve... Nothing is impossible - it only takes longer or you need a bigger gun...Be strong and courageous, and remember the words of Admiral D.G. Farragut -"Damn the toropedos and pass the lattes..." or something like that...?
Fair winds and calm seas - an "old deck ape" Dad
Mentor88 said...We just read your companys 2nd journal. It is great to see your company progressing as a unit. Your days are full, you are working hard-lots of IT, marching, classes and plenty of running. Can't wait to see you and the rest of W-181 at graduation. Sara - Mom and I are following your company journals. Your sister and Bonnie miss you. Keep up the good work all of you. See you in August.
Whiskey 181 - Just read the journal posted 7/7 sounds like you are all learning that working as a team will have its lows but the highs will make it all worthwile. You are half way thru basic and are working and thinking as ONE. You know you can all count on each other and we can count on you as GUARDIANS of our country. Keep up the good work. We are all proud of you. Can't wait till graduation!
Whiskey 181 -- you're 1/2 way there. I'm sure some of the toughest days are behind you, with more to come. Keep your chins up and focus on what brought each of you here!
Katie, stay focused on your goals and dreams. You are a strong, intelligent women and will make your country proud. Keep up the good work!!
Love Auntie Christine
Whiskey Company 181- you all can pull it together. Leave no man/women behind- help them out. You are at the half way point.. Keep working at it, you all will make it over the rough spots as a TEAM.
Hey Travis, read your guys journal, sounds like a rough week with some high points. Also sounds like you guys still have a lot to learn from each other. And it looks like your leaders are trying to give you good visuals to help you see where you are and where you need to be. Those of you who were the motivators need to take a look at those in the life jackets and see where you are able to help motivate them to keep there heads above the water. And remember to keep being motivators and keep moving forward cause if you don't you could end up needing a life jacket. And those of you in the life jackets look at the motivators and see what you can learn from them. Don't feel bad or disapointed because of where you are. That was not the purpose of the activity. It was ment to show you where you are and where you can look to for help. And that it is standing right beside you, your teammates. Dig down deep inside of yourselves and help each other achive greatness. Everyone is motivated by different things and are there for many different reasons. So get to know what your teammates motivations and drives so you can help build them up when they are down. Also another thing I noticed, every day is a brand new day do not drag or carry the disapointments of yesterday into the next day. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is the future, today is a gift that is why they call it present. I know this happened last week but I hope this still helps. Love you Travis more than you'll ever know. Till next time.
Hey Whiskey 181 - sounds like last week was one of opportunity! You made it through and just kept trying! Almost done and we can't wait to come out and watch you all on August 7th! Hang Tough!!!
W-181 - You are about half way up that mountain. It's been a long hard climb to this point. Now is the time to really come together as a company and demostrate to everyone that W181 is great team. Each one working together with all the others to move upward to the summit and on to victory. Together you will accomplish what individually would be impossible. In the U.S. military there has always been the absolute, "leave no man behind". Everyone's part of the team. Stay strong and determined. Despite your set backs you have demonstrated you have what it takes. Peacemakers Son: Mo Mo and Schnitts say hi. See you soon. Semper Paratus.
Whiskey-181 ~ Keep your heads up, keep moving forward and don't let the bumps in the road get you down. Keep working hard and putting your best efforts into everything you do. You're gonna get there!! You're already half way through basic training.
A special hello to my daughter Haleigh! We are so proud of all of you!
Love, Mom
xoxo

Dear Whiskey 181 - just as you all have been forming we your families have been forming into one big cheerleading squad for our recruits! We are behind each and everyone of you encouraging you to work together and share your skills. Mario I know you are working as hard as you can: keep it up. If you guys can march in sync together you are over the hump - that takes a lot of teamwork!
I read all the journals so know that everyday up until graduation will bring more challenges. You recruits are incredibly courageous - you can handle it because you are now Semper Paratus! I can't wait to meet my son's new friends in August!
Love Miguela
Keep up the energy Whiskey 181 - you have a little cousin at home wanting to be just like one of you when he grows up. We're proud of you E.Feaster and love reading the blogs.
Nice to see that Whisky 181 did well in the Sunset Parade. But I hear your having trouble making your bunk - just do it "Aunt Gwen clean" - miss you and Frank ask about you everyday and if your driving boats yet.
Hello Charlie,
Mom returned home from Europe, last night. Sounds like she had quite the experience. I am in EI this weekend, but headed to the mountains, in Sunday. Hope to get some waves and cycling in today. Tomorrow is renter turnover day at the beach house, so I will be cutting grass, wading things down, etc. I am sure that they are keeping you guys busy, but if you get a chance, please send a note. It would be particularly helpful to know approximately when you might be calling with duty station info, so that we might ve standing by ready to receive. You are half way there buddy, so dig down deep, embrace a team ethos, and keep charging. Always with love - Dad
Hello Charlie,
Hooyah! Mom received both pieces of correspondence and, today, I got your letter. Thanks!! I was sorry to read that you have been sick, but glad to read of your recovery. I will scan and circulate your letter asap. It is good to know that your company commanders are squared away, patriotic, fit guys serving as good role models. Learn all that you can from them. Even the seemingly most anal things will likely become relevant in the real world. Often it seems ridiculous to pay so much attention to how one might fold a t-shirt, etc., but the lesson is in the detail and attention thereto. I can assure you that getting in the habit of paying close attention to detail is critical to mission safety and success (ex. think how important the difference in a red, green, or black wire might be in a demo op; or tying the right knot in a rescue; etc.). It is all important. Stay focused, motivated, alert, and on point. The reward will be worth the effort!. Good luck with the PRT! Always with love - Dad (Mom sends her love , as well)
Whiskey 181
Your weekly journals show an increasing amount of skill and knowledge...You should all be so proud of yourselves!! Learning to work and function as a team is one of the most important skills you will ever learn...no matter where you are or who you are with, you will possess the skill and determination to carry on and succeed in anything that comes your way! Halfway there...God bless you all and remember to focus on the pride that being a part of such an elite group will bring to you (and already brings to us!)
AVM- I knew you could do this!!!!
Keep up the great work! Whiskey 181 can become something great if you all dig down and work as one. As a tubesniper once told me, "aim small miss small." You all know the goal dont let it out of your mind. Justin, im sure your doing great. Remember what Tony Horton would say, "your doing 20 well im doing 21." Your working hard for your family and country and I could not be more proud to call you my brother. I have much to learn from you my friend. Cant wait to see you finish strong. Your biggest fan - Rankin
Whiskey 181 - everyone of your parents, spouses and children wish they were on hand to watch you march in the sunset parade. What a proud moment for you, all of us and for our country as it trains another company of Guardians. Almost there - stay focused, work together and start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Morgan we are so proud of you and love you very much. Semper Paratus!

SR MA Gill - We love you and miss you. Waiting for August!
Hello Charlie,
Hope things are starting to gel for you guys, as you progress toward graduation, etc. I am in Asheville today having just finished PST/training with the boat crew there. Heading to Charlotte from here. The mountain is nice. I think that I will go do the trail in Balsam that you introduced me to a few times as part of my workout, today. The weather is fabulous. I will do a lap for you. Stay focused and all will be good! Always with love - Dad
Whiskey 181 - Sounds as if things are really coming together - having official portraits taken, having a better understanding of colors, patriotism and what is means to serve your country, mid term, fitness exams and filing out the dream sheets. The road has been tough but you have worked together as a team and celebrated the highlights and hopefully learned from the lows. You are becoming a strong, cohesive unit Whiskey 181 and we are all so proud of you. Morgan - we miss you and love you and can't wait until graduation. The pride we feel can't be expressed in mere words. Stay focused, continue to work as a team, take care of each other and remember you are members of the United States Coast Guard. Semper Paratus.
The weeks are going by fast now so keep up the momentum, Whiskey 181. Hope the team work is starting to get stronger and your helping each other out. Frank is proud of his big cousin - love & miss.
It seems surreal to read about your progress, your ups and downs, and your dedication to motivate yourselves and inspire others all wrapped up into one big weekly post! Whiskey 181's desire to be the best that you can leaves me cheering you on here from home, and wondering if you all know just how much you are thought of and appreciated for what you have set out to do! Hang in there, remember your purpose, and use your newfound knowledge to assist those new recruits as you stated!
AVM- See you soon...Keep up the Great work!!!!
Whiskey 181 - we remain proud of each and everyone of you and the choice you made to serve as a Guardian of our country. Freedom is not free and it is because of people like you we will remain that way. We hope that you all got the stations and/or schools you wanted. Morgan, the USCGC Mellon sounds like an awesome ship, we are so proud of you and all that you have accomplished. Remember to continue to work as a team, remain focused and celebrate each others successes. We can't wait to see you all on the parade field for graduation. Love you and miss you Moe. Semper Paratus!
