RECRUIT JOURNALS
Journals are posted to USCGBOOTCAMP by close of business every Tuesday. The first journal for each company is posted in week three of training.
If a journal entry is not posted, it means one of two things, the company is in week one or two of training or the Web master did not receive a submission.
The journals were created to provide family and friends with a peek into the lives of their recruits. The recruit historians try to document the experiences of the company not individual recruits.
We hope you enjoy reading the journals and experiencing Coast Guard Recruit Training through the eyes of our Guardians in the making.

According to Wyatt you guys are doing lots of pushups and swimming lots of laps. Got to love a 6year olds take on things.
We love you so much.
Mom and Wyatt
I have been reading these posts for the last few months in preparation for my daughter leaving.
Zulu's first post is one of the most uncouraging, positive posts I have read.
Hats off to this company's historian. May he/she continue to keep his/her spirits high!
Chris,
Keep working hard, we know you can do it. Hopefully you'll get a nice tan down at the beach.
Love,
Old Lady Lin(50)
Zulu- Hooray for your first post! I'm sure I wasn't the only one stalking the website waiting to hear about how the company is doing. You're almost half way there. Soon you'll be able to say that the time went by so fast.
Devin- Keep moving forward and work hard. Always thinking of you. I love you!
Hello there SR Murphy....Thinking of you, as always, and counting the days until I hear that Murphy voice of yours. Hang in there....before you know it you'll be swappin' stories in the basement playing a little ping pong with the guys...and Lacie!

Erika and all of Zulu 181. Teamwork is everything. I am so proud of all of you for hanging tough and together. I just made reservations for graduation. All of the rooms are high dollar due to the season. I found that telling them that you are coming for graaduation gets a discount or off season rates. I cant wait to see my girl who I'm sure has matured already into a lovely woman!
Devin,
Sounds like Zulu 181 is thriving!! Week 4 is already here. Wow!!
Look forward every tuesday to the Journal. Keep up the amazing work and see all of Zulu 181 at graduation.

GO ZULU 181!
Love, MOM :-p
Go Alex!
We are so proud of you. Sara is still in Rhode Island helping Joan close up her house and should be home by tomorrow. Eric sent you a letter today and mom put pictures and news clippings for you to see what has been going on in the world outside of TRACEN, Cape May. Eric's team did not win in Virginia Beach this weekend but we did. We took the ferry home thru Cape May on Tuesday and drove up to the base. It was great for your mom because she was in need of an Alex fix. I hope you get stationed in Cape May. I hope you got all our letters! There are more coming. We booked our room on the Cape for the 27th August 2009 so we can be fresh and on time for your graduation. We both miss you so much and we are so proud of you and the other coasties! Zulu 181 will surely be the best of the best when you graduate the end of the month.
Stay focused, stay strong, stay positive!
Graduation day is the beginning and it will be here soon.
love you son,
Dad
Hey Jesse, everybody is proud of you and we all hope you are doing well. Joe and Sis say, "Arf, bark, woof," whatever that means in dogspeak.
Love Daddy
SR HUMPHREY....
hi there, i see that you have received your colors. sounds exciting, however i have not the slightest idea what that means. nonetheless i hope you have stored this event in your long term memory because i expect to hear every last detail!!
i have been sending you letters, hopefully you have been getting them. i guess the addressed and stamped envelope i included has not yet been an incentive to write me back. i must come up with something a little more creative and tactful i suppose ;).
as im sure you know (maybe even better than your own name) I MISS YOU terribly! lets not even get into how much i love you.....!!
im sure you are doing great... what with your physical ability, your discipline for studying, and your need to be very clean. this can only make things a little bit easier on you i should hope.
hope to hear from you SOON -- i pathetically check the mail 5 times a day and have my phone glued to my hip... i have not lost hope, yet know you well enough to know not to get my hopes up as well.
w/ love always,
amanda :)

SR Humphrey
Hey, Dude, Kitty here. Heard you are in a new class. Sory you were sick, but after what you did to me I am not so sure it wasn't "justice". I have recovered from the bath you gave me in the pool before you left Vegas. Don't you know cats don't swim? And you wonder why I sank to the bottom of the pool and then scratched you when you did your rescue swimmer thing. Saw the video of your impression of an ostrich - awesome, man! Remember, cats still rule, and Coasties drool.
Kitty
Congrats for the assignment SR Brentlinger. What an amazing adventure that will be. We're so proud of all that we hear about your accomplishments. Keep up the good work! See you in August. Love from Oklahoma

Your almost through! 21 more days to go! Finish strong and make us all proud. We'll buy you boys a decent meal when your done haha :) Congratulations on making it this far!
Hello Ally and Zulu Company. Al, awsome to hear from you again last evening, for a whopping five minutes! Stay strong little weed. Just think, in three weeks for today you will be flying back to mid-Michigan with us. Which by the way is wet, wet, wet today. I am probably going to start drawing up plans for my Ark today.Remember those spaces between your fingers are so that someone elses can fill them in. Support each other. I love you Mom
TAYLOR, if you read this, could you please let me know what station in Michigan Brian got assigned to? Ironic that I live in Michigan and my daughter gets stationed in Oak Island, North Carolina. I think it will be a great adventure for her to branch out and live in another state. The same goes for Brian. We Michiganders will support him. Have a happy day, Margo
SR Drew Humphrey
Looks like you got your preferred location but not necessarily your preferred job, at least to start. We mailed 3 envelopes (marked 1, 2, 3 on the outside so you can track what you recevied) describing your ship (with pictures) and port and a few recent articles on your ship ranging from rescuing a 1200 lb seal, to training with the FBI to being outfitted with new weapons for port security. #1 has the best info along with a sample of the orders you will receive. Needless to say we are excited to see you at graduation. Keep hangin' tough. Pa Dukes
Ricky- hey bro- so many things going on here- preparing for Monique's wedding and Jennyfer got engaged!!! I hear you have some nice Cali locations to pick from- let me know what your top choices are! I sent you a letter not sure if you got it!
Love you and SOOOO Proud of you,

It was great to hear your voice on Fri. I'm so glad I caught your call, was nervous I'd miss it. Looks like Cape May is in for a HOT one today. Hot, muggy and stormy here in Michigan. Sounds like several in your company are coming our way, while you're headed to the other side of the country. You all have such an adventure ahead of you. Hard to believe the first phase is winding to close already. Or is that easy for us to say out here? Keep up the good work! We'll see you soon.
Love ya,
Mom

We finally received the questionnaire we sent you to fill out about boot camp. Your responses were great!
Yesterday, Michaelyn sent us a link to a video from a North Bend OR television news station on a rescue Chris participated in on Tuesday. They hoisted a 10 year old who had been pulled from the ocean after nearly drowning. The cliffs were too steep for rescuers to climb so they called the Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter to hoist both the child and paramedic. We will save the link for you. It is way cool. Chris will check to day to see if the boy survived.
We still plan on coming to graduation. We arrive Wednesday night and stay at the Marriot near the airport in Philly. Then Thursday we drive to Atlantic City where we will stay at the Hilton. Friday, we will drive down to Cape May. It is about 1 hour drive. Love ya dude, Pa Dukes

Good afternoon Zulu Historian. Thank you for the weekly update. You can't imagine how much we appreciate getting news from Cape May. The last line of your letter said you all will completely amaze us. Consider me already amazed from day one in about February when our daughter Ally said to us "I'm joining the Coast Guard!" She could not have chose a better branch to serve in. It will be awesome to see what outstanding Guardians you all will be. I am so proud to be part of the Coast Guard Family. I love you Ally. Mom

Hey Alex,
It was great to see you on Saturday. Just to let you know I spotted you first when you were standing on the corner in front of the base.
I hope you are all feeling better now that you got time off base. Too bad it rained while we were all trying to enjoy time with you on the Wildwood boardwalk.
Zulu 181 it was a pleasure to meet as many of you as we did. The USCG did a great job with all of you. Polished belt buckles, shinny shoes, and uniforms pressed and sharp. Your families will all be proud, as we were when we met most of you on Saturday.
Graduation is just 4 days away.
Thank you BMC Ruchser, GMC Dendy, and SKC Peralta job well done.
Your unit represented well on Saturday.
Alex we are so proud of you and love you so much,
Dad
Hi Ally and all of Team Zulu. I hope you all enjoy this last week of boot camp that you worked so hard to see. How cool is it to be the senior Company that gets to graduate in just 4 days?! Look at the new recruits shaking in their boots and see how far you have come. Seeing you again is on the horizon Ally as we fly out on Wednesday. So excited that I could pee my pants!! I love you Al. Mom
Chris,
Graduation is now just a couple of days away.
I can’t believe that time has flown by so fast. But I know that Friday can't come soon enough for you and all of your Zulu 181 buddies.
We all can’t wait to see Zulu 181 marching tight, crisp, disciplined and LOUD ready to receive the rewards for the long days of blood, sweat, and tears.
So, let the cheers commence: Hip, Hip - Hooray (X3) for Zulu 181.
BTW, Five Guys for your entire leave is on me.
Go Zulu 181!
Dad, plus Mom and Cathy
SR Dean and all of Zulu 181, what an accomplishment! Phase 1 of your Coast Guard journey is almost complete. I had no doubt, Ally, that you could do it. Now is the time to be proud of yourself for accomplishing something that not many can say they have done. Savor the memories of these last few days. I want to hear all the details on Friday. This is my last blog to you since we leave Michigan tomorrow. One step closer to seeing you. Yippppppee!! YOu make me so proud. I love you. Mom p.s. SR Sprague,
We hit the road tomorrow about 4 pm headed in the wrong direction first and hope to leave CMU by 5 pm. We plan to spend the night in Ohio.
Sorry, we couldn't afford the 50 lbs of M&Ms you requested--you'll just have to survive on whatever food you find laying around in our van. Oh, yeah, we're bringing your girlfriend, though she refused to be tied on top of the van in order to make room for more food for you. Ha, ha!
We're really looking forward to seeing you on Friday!
Mr. & Mrs. W
SR Johnson -
We're getting ready to head out! The caravan will pull out Thursday morning!! I'm trying to figure out a way to pack Rayna-lol. She will be spending a lovely weekend at a dude ranch playing with horses (she's staying with Kris and Brian).
Keegan is not going to bed! He keeps asking when we are leaving-I told him 2 days-I hope he sleeps soon! Gabs and Danii are packed and ready to go. Told Danii to bring bathing suit-she wanted to know why-were we going to be by the water...she just can't help it no matter what color she tries to dye her hair!
ooh rah Zulu 181

SR Johnson (Flippers)

Hey Alex
Two more days and a wake up and you will have graduated. We are so proud of your accomplishments thus far. We know that Kodiak, Alaska will be by far your greatest accomplishment and adventure ever!
You have become the young man I knew you could be. In only a short time, and yes 8 weeks is a short time in relation to your life, you have become a mature, responsible and I know capable member of the United States Coast Guard. This was not an easy task but you did it!
Today's journal said it all you are the "Guardians," you are the "United States Coast Guard."
So now its time to end the time at Cape May dry dock, get your feet wet and get under way. Here comes your journey of a lifetime!
It was an honor to meet most of you as it is our honor that you represent our country.
God Bless you all!
love and respect to all of you in Zulu 181,
Alex's Family
Hey Justin -
One last post for good luck I guess. Gram and GUM and GAC are already in Atlantic City making sure the casinos don't lose any money and waiting for Friday to arrive.
I couldn't be more proud of you and what you've accomplished. And to think this is only the beginning! You all have so much to look forward to.
To all the friends and family who is getting on the road or on a plan today to travel to Cape May, be safe!
Love you, Justin. See you in a couple of days.
Mom
Jason,
We are packing up to head your way. Leaving early in the morning and will arrive 13 or so hours later. I am so excited, seems so much longer than 7 1/2 weeks since we've seen you. Can't wait to see you in your uniform! Mike is very sorry he can't be there for you but he is underway this week. You know how proud we are of you, our THIRD Guardian! We are very proud to be a Coast Guard family. See you soon.
Love, Linda
SR HUMPHREY....
Final day!!! THANK GOD! I don't know how much longer I could do this.... Anywho, I just wanted to write and say that I am your biggest fan and hope to be in contact with you soon ;) ...You never know, it may be love at first sight [again]. Hope your graduation goes well, look out for one last letter from me tomorrow afternoon. I love you lots and lots....
Always & Forever,
Amanda :)
Hello Miss Alexandrea Dean, We landed in Philly last night. Headed to the base this a.m. to buy stuff. Thank God for Dad's military connections! Maybe we will spot you walking about. Can't wait for tomorrow. Have fun with all of Zulu on this your last full day of bootcamp. We are so proud of you and we love you. Mom and Dad and Seth.
Family, friends, and graduating members of Zulu 181 --
What an awesome experience! From saying good bye at the MEPS building, getting that last text from the bus "we're here", receiving the first letter home, seeing the progress on the blog, hearing your voice on the phone after 6 weeks, the long drive to Cape May, the anticipation of graduation day, to finally seeing all you so strong and proud with newfound confidence and self assurance that was so obvious on your faces! What an experience! And that is just what we experienced on our end. Oh the stories you are telling now that you're home. Congratulations to every single one of you and to the families and friends who are now busting with pride. Good luck to you all on your journey!
