RECRUIT JOURNALS
Journals are posted to USCGBOOTCAMP by close of business every Tuesday. The first journal for each company is posted in week three of training.
If a journal entry is not posted, it means one of two things, the company is in week one or two of training or the Web master did not receive a submission.
The journals were created to provide family and friends with a peek into the lives of their recruits. The recruit historians try to document the experiences of the company not individual recruits.
We hope you enjoy reading the journals and experiencing Coast Guard Recruit Training through the eyes of our Guardians in the making.
This is an official United States Coast Guard posting for the Public's information.
Our posting does not endorse this site or anything on it, including links to other sites,

He said he only had 10 minutes to write, " it is as bad as he thought it would be. haha, but manageable". He said the stress level is unbelievable. They are in bed everynight at 10 PM. It was short and very sloppy, which is not like him so I can only immagine...It was great to hear him be so honesty yet optimistic about things getting better. Hope all of you get letters soon!

Do the "kids" get to see this blog? I read on another one that they don't....anyone?
Sabrina - no they will not see this blog. The recruits will not have access to a computer until at least week 4, and it will only be used to research potential units they would like to be assigned to. To all you family members remember, the hardest part is over for the recruits. The Company is now formed and are working together towards graduation. For my brother Josh, hang in there. Can't wait 'til you join the fleet. Semper Paratus.

Great to see B181's journal started! Very proud of my son also. Hoping for some pictures soon.
Check out Victor 180s week 8/9 final Journal posted on January 27. They mention our B181's arrival at Cape May. Although it's rough - it was said so kindly and whistfully....I am sure they are coming together - now they are no longer the newest kids on the block. I see that C181 has started.
So proud of the boy (Man). It would be great to her short bio's from family and loved ones. My son was raised in a small town in MT. Participated in sports in H.S., loves to hunt and fish. Our area is famous for its recreation so he grew up doing all these things. Spent a couple of years in College, but could not decide what he wanted to do. It's wonderful that he has taken a new direction that will help him become even stronger and more committed to life. Would like to here from others. Look forward to possibly meeting some at graduation.
"Main Man" Keep up the good work - and hold strong. We're so proud of you. Go Bravo 181
Brandon R. - Poca Poca 269 - Proud of you and miss you much. Keep your sense of humor and be strong.

GO BRAVO 181 - we are all cheering you on...
Hello "Mom of the Old Man" our son Cody met a really nice young man from MT in Boise, Id at the MEPS office. I believe he said he wanted to be an EMT in CG. They roomed together and traveled to basic together. Was wondering if he was your son. Our son also grew up in small mountain, recreation, town, but in Idaho (Mccall). Also loves to ski, hunt and fish. So proud of him!! GO B181!!!
Hi Victor:
Big deal for all my patients that my daughter is going Coastie.
Nice picture in the Record Bee! I thought Tina should have used your graduation photo but she picked out a pic from the cruise that showed what I thought was too much skin.
Do you get yelled at a lot? How's the food? Are you sore?
Love, Binks

I am so proud of Bravo 181. I have a good feeling that tomorrow's journal will be positive and that this past week was successful in your growth in the Coast Guard. Feelings can not express how especially proud I am of Brandon R. He is now part of the company drill team, Captain of the Colors team, Guide-on Bearer, and a mentor to a fellow guardian recruit. Stay strong Brave 181 and work together! ONLY 24 AND A WAKE UP!!!
I received a tear-filled phone call from my daughter last night to tell me that she has been "reverted" for seven days - which means she moves over to Munro Hall to join Charlie 181. You can be sure I will keep sending good, strong thoughts to everyone in Bravo....
Even though it was wonderful to hear her voice, that call was one of the toughest things I've ever been through!
Best of everything to you all...
Aww Sabrina Ferris's mom - I have been holding my breath about that with my daughter, especially on the physical stuff. My thoughts and prayers are with you and util March 20th, you never know how many of us may be joining you on the 27th! Keep the faith!
Way to finish off week Ø4 Bravo 181 ... keep your heads up and eyes straight ahead!!
Waiting to hear if Jess passes physical part as she hurt her ankle on the course. Come Friday we will know if we go up to Cape May on the 20th or the 27th. Bless each and everyone of our kids, husbands & friends. We are proud of everyone of you.
Geoff and Bravo 181, Keep at it! strive to be the best! The roller coaster ride of training is there to prepare you for all that the seas will be throwing at you! Study and know to heart even the smallest details, they are there to make you a true Coastie! Respect is earned and together you will earn respect too! Make us proud of our guardians of the seas!

Hey Brandon M. know people back home love and miss you! Im really proud of you!
<3 Tiger
To Sabrina Ferris Mom, sometimes there is comfort in knowing you are not alone. My son, SR Sisti, was notified on 2/21 he was being held back 7 days which moves him from Alfa Company to Bravo Company. Keep up the prayers and letters. The USCG has been doing this for a long time. I have every confidence they know what they're doing and why they're doing it.
To Linda,
Thanks so much for your kind words...I too believe that things happen for a reason and have no doubt that the CG has a grand plan!
Best of luck to you and your son.
Geoff, Great to get your letter. Sorry to hear you were ill. Glad you're feeling better. To all you at B181 keep up the hard work it WILL pay off at the end.
Linda,
Welcome to the Bravo family! I know it is disheartening to be away from your son an extra week, but it will make him stronger. The Bravo men and women will be there for him. I know it must be tough for him right now, but they will all get through it together.
Stay strong, we don't have that much longer either!!
Brando Main Man - Just 21 days and a wake-up to go. Lots of high 5s and hugs wait for you at the finish line. Keep doing what you're doing and stay focused. Family's prayers and thoughts are there with you. Love you and miss you. G'Ma
Received another letter from my son yesterday. He sounded much more upbeat this time. Maybe this is the indication that things are finally coming together for the Company. Sounds like they had a pretty tough row, but I'm certain it has made each one of them that much stronger. Can't wait to see the stands full of family and friends all with eye's full of pride for all the young people from Bravo 181. See you there.
Well - It's my daughters 19th birthday today. First Birthday away. Does anyone know if they do anything special or is it better if no one knows so they won't give her a hard time? Since I can't wish her the happy birthday, I thought I could at least post it here so when she gets out she knows I was thinking of her.
Yesterday I received my first phone call! It was so good to hear his voice. He called to tell me that his duty station is Dulac, LA! Apparently housing is very limited there so he had to give me the information so we could set it up. Hope you all get to find out your places soon!
Proud CG Wife- Rollins ...Got your assignment congrats ... below is a link to that area with some demographics too.
http://www.city-data.com/city/Dulac-Louisiana.html
NAK- Thanks so much for the information, every little bit helps. They are in quite a hurry for me to get us a place there. They had my husband call me at 11am today to find out if I had housing set up already. So I've been rushing around all day trying to set every thing.
I have a question. My daughter is going straight to A School from Boot Camp. Will she still get an assigment before A school or will they wait until after she finishes to give her an assignment? This is a bit frusterating trying to make travel arrangements from Hawaii not know what is going on til the last minute.
Cactus-This depends on the A School. What rate is she going?
She is going to FS (Food Specialist) A School as an e3 at Tracen Petaluma.
FS "A" School is approximately 11 weeks long. She'll most likely receive orders to her first unit within the last four weeks of school. With the FS rate being a "critical rate" in the CG, she may know sooner, but not while in boot camp.
Thanks a million!! That is a big help. It also helps me to narrow down the questions I need to be able to ask her when she calls. Aloha.
What about OS (Operation Specialist) will they find out their orders before leaving boot camp? His school will be in Petaluma California.
For those recruits being ordered to "A" Schools either in Petaluma, CA or Yorktown, VA, they will only receive orders to those schools. Those schools are their first units. No "post-A-school" orders will be cut while they're in boot camp. Reason being is that it is assumed the students will graduate A school as 3rd Class Petty Officers. E4 and above billets are very different from E3 and below billets. As such, orders to future units can not be issued until they're in school (usually within the last third of the school). There are a great deal of factors that affect assignments and things can change quickly. Some schools can last up to 7 months. Hope this clears up any confusion!
YEAHHHH- I just got "the call'! OMG it was so great to hear her voice. You were right, her orders are to Petaluma for A school and she will get her permanent orders after that. I am on cloud 9!!!
I love to keep up on B181's journal. I know they are trying and they are making progress. Looking forward to hearing our son's voice. We are so proud of you MWC...Hold your head up and face the world...You all are over half way there. Hang in there. We believe in you all as a unit.
Just got the call, 5 min .ago...our daughter, Lauran. is going to Chincoteque, Md....she put in 5 choices and this wasn't one of them, but we'll be closer then Hatteras, N.C. Soooo good to hear her voice...can't wait to visit her on the 6 hour leave in week #7...hang in there BRAVO 181....we are all behind each and every one of you! God Bless!
So proud..to hear that "mom" word on the other end of the phone was just awesome..just got the call and he will be station in Arkansas...
Looking forward to graduation. Go Bravo 181..We are proud of you all.
My boyfriend just called me tonight and said he will be stationed in NJ. This was not one of his choices. I can't remember which base in NJ because the call was so quick. Does anyone know the NJ bases? Its not Cape May or Atlantic City. Thanks!
Hi Anielki2...NJ has bases in Long Beach Island and there's another in Manasquan or Sea Girt...I wish my "pirate" could trade place with yours...she'll be in Chincoteaque Md or Va...Take care
Just realized I had a missed call from 609 area code last night. I have been good about having my cell with me but looks like my recruit tried to call house last night. Will they get a second chance does anyone know?
I am so disappointed
USCG Mom...I'm not sure about this, but Ive been reading "Blogs" form all the units and I think we may get another call this weekend, but again I'm not sure. I was totally shocked last night by our call, she could only talk for 90 sec. and it was to tell us where she'll be stationed, but I've read where others got longer calls and it should be this week end for Bravo 181...but I'm not definate. Try not to feel bad, though...just keep writin' letters!
Just got a call last nite and today. The bad news was today. My Jessica's ankle is still bad and she was moved out of Bravo. No idea for graduation until her ankle heals. I wish all the Bravo famlies my best and am so sorry not to be able to meet you and stand proud with you, She was so heartbroken not to graduate with BRAVO. Stand tall and proud everyone and keep up the blogs.
My Jessie won't be graduating with her Bravo Company. She is still having trouble with her ankle. Congrats to all you great Bravo 181. Stand tall and good luck in all the places you go.
Mama Dukes...so sorry to hear your sad news...hope your daughter heals fast and gets where she has to go.
Go Bravo 181! Got our news yesterday our guardian is headed to Galveston, TX on the USCGC Dauntless (WMEC 624)
Got my short call also. Geoff is heading to Rockland Me. not his first choice either. It was so great just hearing his voice. Keep it up "B181" the end is in sight.
to r&:phallgreen, thanks so much for the message. Hope your coastie gets to be close by. Congrats to you and your family.
My son hasn't called yet. Is today the last day they would be calling? The wait is killing me. OCMOM did your recruit get to call back yet?
It's 8:19pm and we didn't get a 2nd call...the 1st call was Fri. nite, but it was just seconds long, you could hear someone breathing right next to her, timing her...she could only blurt out where she was going to be stationed, and that was it...God bless all of those who started out as Bravo 181!!!
LAURAN...WE LOVE YOU!!!
After three missed calls according to caller id one two minute call priceless!!
USCG Mom...so good to hear you got a call!!!

Wow what a week. Our Jessica was still with Bravo during that week. She must have got sent back for the bad ankle on the BAD Saturday drill. Did get to see a picture of her finally!! Firtst picture on the journal page. That made me feel so good to see her. Keep going strong BRAVO still don't know where Jessica will be.
Good news and bad news. Good news my sons 1st station is Hawaii. Bad news he is in the sick ward for high fever. Get well quick Dustin. We are so proud of you!!!!!
Jenbenda-so sorry your son is sick. I live here in Hawaii so if you need any help with things on this end, let me know. My sons best friend is in the USCG here (stationed on the Jarvis) so we may be able to help. It's always nice to have people so that he has a place to go on holidays :) I so hope my daughter will be able to be stationed back here in Hawaii but we won't know until after she finishes A school. If you need anything - please feel free to email jkribell@benchmarkmanagement.com
Does anyone know if the family has to make living arrangements for our cadets? Do they get a place to rent on their own or do we, the parents, make these arangements? This is all new to us, and our daughter is stationed in a vacation-seasonal area, Chincoteague. I'm just wondering if we go and do this or if the C.G. places them, like in a dorm...appreciate any feedback...Go Bravo!!!

If your comfortable you can contact me at jcollins254@sbcglobal.net with the assignment(station/cutter) and I can send you the unit info sheet. For instance my recruit is heading to a small boat station she will be put up at the duty section while making arrangements for living in the economy. This is a good deal as they get a chance to be at their assignment around the clock & get acclimated. The info sheet will let you know what the deal is at that assignment.
I'll try to generalize your recruit's housing arrangements at their first units. Let me assure you that they'll be taken care of by their units. That's what we do. We'll start with single members with no dependents. Those assigned to cutters will most likely live on the cutter for a short time and then be transferred to barracks (like a dorm, usually shared 2-3 per room). Those assigned to stations or other land units will most likely be assigned to barracks. A release from government quarters to live "on the economy" is generally not granted to junior members unless of course no quarters are available. Married members or those with dependents will generally be offered government housing (not barracks...actual homes, apartments, etc.) depending on availability. Major factors influencing the type or size of housing include paygrade and number of dependents. If gov't housing is not available or there is a waiting list, members are authorized to collect BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing, non-taxable amount which is based on unit location) and live on the economy. Please keep in mind that this is a generalization. Every unit is unique and each command may have its own policies. As SARDOG mentioned the Unit Data Sheets usually offer very detailed info on the unit and include specific info on the type of housing afforded to newcomers to the fleet. You can usually find the Data Sheets using Google. Feel free to email me with questions at Patrick.J.Godfrey@uscg.mil
To my baby bro Josh, only 16 more days of the most fun you've ever had! Grats on CGC Spencer. See ya 20 MAR!

Does anyone know if our recruits get on base liberty today, March 7...and if so, does that include a phone call? I've been reading ALPHA'S blogs and journals and I think it should happen today. Just curious if anyone would know, thanks.
Alpha is a week ahead. It will be impossible to tell what our Bravo recruits have earned on the upside or downside.I look forward to the next journal update. But, if they give themselves to the team or as Alpha's journal writer said become "Family" I think we can be confident they will be given the same rewards for hard work when earned. Bravo families keep up the great support.
I think they usually get the on base liberty but they have been struggling so much that I am not sure they will earn it. I know they have lost their writing privledges during the week so....it's up in the air. Just in case though, I woulnd't be too far from the phone!
We just got a 10+minute call from our daughter!! Hallelujah!!! She passed all her physical stuff and so it looks like she is on target to graduate on the 20th!!! YEAH!!! I hope you all get a call today as well - this is more precious than silver and gold....
Yeah for you JKribell. Did she call your cell or home? Do they call collect? I did send my son with a calling card? I'm so happy for you. I so much to do but dont want to leave my home.
I had sent her with a calling card so she didn't have to call collect.
Hoorah!!! Just got off the phone with my daughter, 15 minutes of pure joy! She's hoarse from yelling, but off base LIBERTY is on for next Sat....Hope you all get a good call!!!
Yeah !!!!! He called. The best 10 minute phone call ever. No voice but it was great to talk to him. He is stationed on the Walnut. I think thats what I heard. Hope everone gets a call today.
Heard from my recruit a couple times today. Priceless 15 minute phone call times 2!!! He said during a drill at 4 am they got their colors, which I guess is a big deal. My recruit sounded strong and had passed everything so far. But did say 4 had gotten reverted this am.
It was so good to hear from Brandon R three times yesterday!! I am so proud of B181 for getting their colors; now they will proudly be able to represent who they are on base. Good luck on all of the tests coming up this week! Only 12 days and a wake up!! I love you BR!!!
(First thank you to the parents who are sending this blog for our new guardians to read!)
Geoff, it was great to talk with you for longer, and it was great to hear positive things are happening! It's awesome to know you have earned your colors. To ALL the Coasties in Bravo 181, do your best make us proud of all our new guardians! Honor that Bravo flag! You are a true inspiration to us here!
It was so good to hear from my husband on Saturday. We got to have a real conversation.I'm sorry to hear about the ones who got reverted! To those families hang in there! It will be over soon.
Bravo- Congratulations on getting your colors. We are all so proud of you. Keep up the good work you are almost finished!
Matt R- I'm very proud of you. I can't wait to see you graduate. I love you!
Yeah Bravo 181 we only have one more journal entry after today!! It's been a long hard journey but we're almost there!! Keep the faith!
Brandon R - It was great to hear your voice on Saturday and to know that you are doing fine. It won't be long now. We are all very proud of you and can't wait until March 20. No matter what the task, you never let us down. Love you and miss you. G'Ma

Way to Go BRAVO 181, Great progress and team work. This weeks journal brought a tear to me eye. The family is counting the days! Smootchie we are so proud of you...
Does anyone know if parents are allowed to see their recruit while they are on off-base liberty? I made plans(I'm 2 hours away) and today I got a letter from her stating recruits weren't allowed to be with family...does anyone know it this is the case or a she is mistaken? I just wanted to be there for her if I could, but I wouldn't want to jepardize anything....any info is appreciated...Pat
Brandon R. you are a week away and I am sure you all are preparing. We can't wait to get there and see what you have been living the past 8 weeks. Bravo 181 has come a long way. We couldn't be prouder. Keep up the good work! 7 and a way up!!!
