Yay! This is so exciting! Can't wait for updates. This will be fun keeping up with what is going on :)

Awesome, can't wait for the first update.

Anyone know who their Company Commanders are?

OCMom said...

My daughter is in A181. She said her company commanders are Wingate, Leathers, Garry & Mendosa and with 4 of them they don't miss a thing. I have received 3 letters so far and they all are positive.

Unknown said...

OCMom: How does your daughter have time to write? My son has only written 1 letter! You are very lucky ! Did she say how they were all doing as a group? My son did not give much info.

OCMom said...

Apparently they are doing alot of PT (physical training) and IT (intense training), so they are pretty tired, but working well as a team. There is also a forum at www.uscg.org where lots of parents and USCG members share info.

Deborah said...

Well Patricia your not alone I have a son in Alpha 181 and when I read OC Mom's post my heart sank, then I read your post and was relieved. My son too only wrote one letter very short not alot of details. Must be a male thing.

Unknown said...

Deborah and OCMom, Got a postcard today, my son said he needed a ruler and some sharpies. Not sure why he can't get them on base but happy to send a "package" even if it only contains supplies. Hopefully on Tues pm or Wed we will have some info on website and some pictures. Hope we see our kids.

Anonymous said...

Patricia,
Sorry to tell you this but Don't send care packages. They are not allowed and will be taken away. Sorry. Our son is in Yankee 180. They are only allowed to write on Sunday morning during their "devine" hours as they call it. Tuesday afternoon and sometimes Wednesday are when the recruit journals are posted. My understanding is that they never see this. It is a great way for families and loved ones to share info though. Take time to read the past journals of other companies and you will get a feeling of what is going on during a particular week. It has been very helpful to our family.

Deborah said...

Well I got my son's bank statment today in the mail and he made a pretty hefty purchase on his ATM to Cape May Commissary I don't know if he bougth supplies or not but I was wondering if I need to put more money in for him or not. I hope I get a letter soon and one that is a little more descriptive. I am hoping to get an update as well.

OCMom said...

My daughter said they can receive "Allowed Items Only". I suggest sending it in an envelope, not a box and without a letter. It will get opened. I sent a pair of underarmour bottoms. No word if she got those. I have also included with letters - stamps, pictures and a couple envelopes. Although they may be able to get these at the store, they may not have time. I can't wait to see a post.

mari said...

I received a post card yesterday :) Although, nothing about supplies or money! Just to send lots and lots of letters to keep him pre-occupied! Also, my boyfriend say they are NOT ALLOWED to receive pictures!!!

mari said...

did anyone notice on the recruit journals that for Alfa 181 it says graduation date 03/06/2009? That is incorrect right? It is supposed to be 03/16/2009.....

mari said...

3/13...my mistake

Dee2 said...

Great to see pictures up. I think I see my son's ears, though they all lookalike now! Have had very positive mail home, sounds like they are doing well. Looking forward to graduation March 13th, think the posting lists the wrong date!

OCMom said...

Got some letters in the mail today! She Did get the package! I believe they can get pictures of family and of a certain size and not in a frame or anything. I did a "copy and paste" to make pictures of the family part of the stationary. My daughter is the Historian!!!The one writing the blog.

OCMom said...

P.S. I think the date is a mistake. It looks like they didn't change the Zulu 180 graduation date when they entered the post.

SisterMaryKate said...

Yeah, Dee, those are definitely your son's ears. I'd say I recognize his haircut, too, but...

dean mcnash said...

my son is in alpha 181 ,can anyone suggest where to stay in cape may march 13th.

Tam said...

So glad that I can get a little more info than pouncing on our mailman everyday. He's getting a little nervous to stop at our box.
I am so proud of my son and to be able to be a part of this. It is nice to know that I'm not the only one really missing my Coastie.
My son says aside from being tired, they are learning that they have to count on each other. Become a team. I think that would help us parents too! Any info. we get & can share would be great. My son too seems to leave alot out at times.
I believe the date for graduation is not correct. We originally had info. that it was going to be the 13th. I hope they get this corrected soon I need to make flight arrangements.

ermtiger14 said...

Hey oc mom so since your daughter is the writer could you please tell her to be more descriptive and detailed with her journals, because if you would read the other journals they are more well written. If she has wrote you so many letters than she has time to write better journals. Sorry if I sound mean but it seems to me that she is using the time to write you instead of focusing on the journals. Every other co. Already has two or more and even b181 has written already. So I know that the other supporters probably feel the same with how short ours journal came out. so please if you could tell her to be more detailed we would all appreciate it!

Coco said...

I agree with those who have said it's a guy thing. My boyfriend has written one letter and one postcard. Both are very vague. His mom and I on the other hand have probably written a total of 6 or 7 letters since receiving our first last friday.
It is great to know that I am not alone. I love his family just as much as my own and being closer to them makes the time go by faster.

My son in law is in Alpha 181. Sure wish the quality of the photos were a little clearer. It is hard to see any faces unless they are right next to the camera. I pray daily for all of them and am proud to be a part of their new life and the commitment that they have made. It is nice to have a place to go to talk with others who are along for the journey as well.

To ermtiger14- Just wanted to let you know that the blogs and letters home have nothing to do with each other. The Historians personal time is hers....her blog time is work time. I think the blogs have been great, so OCmom- your girl is doing just fine (I'm sure I don't need to tell you that:) Time alotted for extra duties such as Historian vary from company to company. Every company is run differently and the training to be a Guardian is much more critical than a blog for the families. We had nothing but snail mail when my husband went through. No contact with other families or comparing notes at all. Also photos are ok...no newspaper clippings, no printouts from internet, and photos must be "clean" obviously. No singing cards.

*cgwife* said...

To Dean McNash- The Montreal Inn is good- http://www.montreal-inn.com/ also the Atlas http://www.atlasinn.com/ and the Periwinkle Inn also http://www.periwinkleinn.com/ All are on the Ocean about a mile and a half away. Good luck!

We all are going through a new experience obviously with the one we love. It’s human nature to be curious of the unknown. We don’t know what goes on day to day but we all know we want to know that’s for sure. If you hear that someone has gotten numerous letters over the week and you have gotten none you begin to worry. You wonder what is going on with your loved one? Is he or she okay, is he or she doing their job, are they in trouble, etc? My father & father in law both served in the military, Navy and Marines, and both say your writing time is allotted and earned , so when I don’t get letter like others do I begin to worry. I am thankful for this board & thankful for everyone’s input, expressing their selves, that is how we learn and are able to cope with our feelings.

Laurel said...

hello to all the new coastie families out there. wanted to thank you for your comments.they are helping me through this rough time without my husband. I just received my second letter from him today and he seems sad to say the least. He also remarked how he has yet to receive any letters from me even though i sent the frist ones out over a week ago. is anyone else having this problem? does mail travel usually take this long? my husband was almost begging me for a letter so you can understand my concern to fix the problem asap. I know that letters are all they have.

Dee2 said...

You can follow site links to local hotels in Cape May. We stayed at the Grand Hotel when my other son completed training 6 years ago, and have reservations now for the 13th. Nothing fancy, but the price was right!, Make sure if you are driving up the coast through the eastern shore to check the ferry schedule and get a reservation. The CG will send us more information a few weeks before with a list of some hotels.
I am thrilled to see the note and pictures posted by our Company A181 and applaud all their hard work

*cgwife* said...

Hi Laurel- I am sure your husband has received a letter by now (his probably passed yours on the way out:) It is hard when we are so used to instant communication to have to wait for letters- I see you are from Texas so that might add an extra two days or so- I saw OCmoms profile said Ocean City NJ which is just 30 minutes from the training center so that is obviously much faster. I sent my husband self addressed stamped envelopes when he was in- that is allowable and saved him that extra step. I think some of the recruits don't write as much because it is harder to have their head "at home" rather than focusing on their goal of graduating and gettting out of there- so shining boots and ironing takes up more of their personal time. Hang in there everyone -37 more days!

mari said...

I love getting the letters! Looks like everything is going well! Cannot wait to head out to New Jersey for graduation. I know the recruits love getting our letters. I am sending one everyday. I try to keep comments on every day things I am doing, not on the "I miss you's". Happy for all of them in making the decision to join :)

Hi all. It's so good to be able to see all your comments and updates! My daughter Jade is in Alfa 181 and she is from the Dallas Texas area. It's great to see that she has other Texans there also and all others. She grew up as an Army brat so can't claim to actually be from Texas (we are from all over), and she loves meeting people from all over. Her husband got a letter from her, (he is the designated letter receiver and distributor of info as she has only so many stamps and envelopes! He said she passed out from dehydration on day 2 and lost her voice from all the yelling 'Aye Aye Sir' on day 4! Yikes!! I believe she was given the honor of second in command of her unit/company? and also in charge of fire safety and evacuation! How awesome!!
Hope to meet some of you at graduation!! I can't wait. Stamped envelopes are good to send. I need to check to see if I can send bobby pins, from what I hear if they can't keep their hair back they have to get it cut..she may look quite different when I finally get to see her. Stay strong families.....our Coasties' need us! DebrafromTx

Shoshi/DebinTx said...

oh this is so awesome!! If you check out the journal entry for Zulu 180, (which is the Company that got there one week before Alfa 181), our A181 Coasties kicked Zulu-180 butts in sounding off in PT weight training!!!! Check it out!! Just love to hear any news about my girl!!! She should have out yelled them because then she lost her voice!!

Laurel said...

shoshi,

great to know my husband is'nt the only Texan holding strong in New Jersey. I'll be praying for your wife and all our coasties.

OCWife,
thanks for the encouragement. i just got a letter from my husband today saying he received all my letters thus far. Whew, what a relief. also he has enjoyed a full nights rest thanks to getting his wisdom teeth pulled. he said he had all his meals taken to him in bed! man and i thought this military thing was suppossed to be hard.

KcTeXaS said...

Hello all!! I just love everyones blogs they have been so helpful in many different ways. Lots of information. My boyfriend is in Alpha 181 and we live in Texas. I was wondering if ya'll knew what your loved ones who are in Alfa 181 are putting on there dream sheet? And how likely it is to get a location they request on there dream sheet?

KcTeXaS said...

Oh yeah Shoshi, my boyfriend was texting me when he was on the bus and he flew with your daughter Jade and was telling me how nice she is:) it was comferting to know he had someone friendly to talk to so he wasnt so nervious oh and he thought it was crazy cause my roomates name is Jade too. Just thought I would share that with you:)

Laurel said...

kc Texas,

What part of Texas are you from? Im from El paso, the armpit of Texas. Who is your boyfriend, perhaps my husband knows him. His name is Michael. I have yet to hear anything about the dreamsheet, but i know we would love to be put somewhere in New England(im assuming you were thinking of station locations?)

dean mcnash said...

did everyone get a call?

mari said...

no, did you receive one? if so, when?

dean mcnash said...

yes,I heard others in the background so i'm assuming everyone got a call.they could only call one person. He did mention he did a good on the gun range so maybe he got a special perk.He said the food was great and everyone is doing good. They are starting to do more hands on training so more fun.Next week they start fire training.I ask him if he was starting to meet the kids and he mentioned they have a great group.

mari said...

Aww, well I hope some of us others get calls soon!! I am sure they don't send everyone to the phone at once! I didn't think they got to call until Liberty...That's what I was told.

PasoJack said...

Dean are you in the right blog? Yankee 180 got to make calls from Fri-Mon to tell their families where they would be stationed. I could be wrong but I don't think Alfa 181 will get to make a call home until the 5th week and its only for a minute. That seems to be the regular schedule of all the companies.

Laurel said...

dean mcnash,
I also got a call from my husband. he said it was a reward for doing well on the gun range. glad you got to hear from you loved one too.

has anyone made flight plans yet? as i understand it, we are supposed to wait until the fifth week before making travel arrangements. im thinking about making mine on friday.

Laurel said...

pasojack,

I believe the reason why dean and others received call today was because their loved ones did well on the gun range and as a reward got to call home for a couple minutes.

PasoJack said...

Wow, lucky you!! That's great the CC's will reward them that way. Good reason to encourage them to be their very best.

Nancy said...

Sounds like Alfa is really coming together as a strong and united team! I got an e-mail response earlier tonight from the CG. They mentioned in the response that there were no pictures this week because the camera was damaged. We will all have to wait until next week. Anxiously awaiting on the coast of Massachusetts for more news on Alfa!!

KcTeXaS said...

Laurel,
I'm from Dallas and that's funny my boyfriends name is Michael too. Yeah I read on other groups posts that they make there dream sheets and I know they pick three places I believe Mike put Houston, South padre, and corpse.
I didn't hear from his parents or from him on a phone call yet. I know there broken into two groups and today a group did classes and the other one did the shooting and pictures. Then tomorrow they switch so there will prolly be a couple calls tomorrow.

Laurel said...

kctexas,
Im sure your michael is gonna do great tomorrow! i'll be sure to pray for him. My husband and i love dallas. we went to school nearby in denton at north texas, and not a day goes by that we dont miss the area and the great people. hang in there, only four and a half weeks left!!

Shoshi/DebinTx said...

Don't know about the rest of Alfa-181 families but I sure love reading the updates on the journal page about how they are doing, what they are doing and how their week has been. I just about bust with pride and awe at how our loved ones just keep stepping up the bar for themselves, their shipmates, and how that makes me step up the bar for myself!!!! I decided to go to my local bloodbank this Friday and donate blood in HONOR of and dedicated to Alfa-181!!!! Anyone else up for it???!!!! Every single one in Alfa 181 and the Company Commanders are donating on Friday of this week........there is 64 SR's in the company and I'm thinking 3-4 Company Commanders.....Can we match their spirit and commitment??!! Think I can get 67 commitments from Alfa-181's loved ones to donate on Friday??
Anyone with me??!!! If that's not possible, whomever can, write back on here and if we fall short, I'm recruiting from extended family, friends and co-workers here in Duncanville, Texas and the surrounding DFW area!! I'm determined to at least match them in the commitment..........pass it around..........make them proud.......be a part of the Coast Guard family!!!!!

Shoshi/DebinTx said...

Hi KcTexas, Laurel, and all the Alfa-181 loved ones family and friends!! So great to hear from the other Texans esp.!! KcTeXas, that so amazing to hear that they got to know each other on the way there and someone to share the butterflies (probably terror!!) feelings!! Jade is a riot and even when things are horrible or crazy, that girl can laugh and smile and be uplifting to a deaf, blind, half asleep goat!! I'm sure they shared a nervous laugh or two before they went deaf from the Company Commander's getting on the bus screaming that they had 15 seconds to get off the bus and they just wasted 10!!!! I'm from the Dallas area, and we are making our flight reservations tomorrow!!! I know they are non-refundable but I am so confident that she won't have to do any extra week due to needing 'corrective training' that I'm ready!! As far as her wish list....I think she is going for Washington State or somewhere along the West Coast. She wanted to go where there wasn't a lot of other people trying to go to. She may have changed her mind since. I'll just have to wait and see.......
As far as I know her husband didn't get a phone call today unless she called him later after I spoke with him at 6ish CST, 7ish EST! I hope he did!!

So, so far we have SR Jade Cude (my daughter), SR Micheal ?? from Dallas, SR Michael ?? from El Paso, SR Graeber(OC moms daughter, our wonderful historian who gave an EXCELLENT journal blog this week!) and that's all the name's I know...........anyone else?? Let's get personal..... :))
Our Coasties are living, breathing, working, yelling, sleeping, running, running, running, running......well, you get the picture!, together, day in day out and will remember each other forever.......and I can't wait to shake each and everyone's hand at graduation.........
so we have 4 Alfa's to call by name out of 64.......any shout outs??!!
GO ALFA-181!!!!
Proud to be a Coastie Mom!!!

Shoshi,
i enjoyed reading your response. your high spirits give me courage and emotional stamina. it's been tough without my husband around but the comments made by you and others are truly uplifting. i know they too are taken care of and doing well.i think getting family and friends involved to give blood is a wonderful idea. i would love to take part in it. i am totally on board!! i will encourage Michaael's family along with mine to also participate.
i am so proud of all our coasties and pray for each of them every night. thank you for taking the time to get to know the other recruits names. i know my husband michael would appreciate that.I too am gonna go for it and book my flight asap-im thinking i'll do it friday. have you found a place to stay yet? im making my reservations at the grand hotel.it's near the training center and it's affordable. thank you again for all your uplifting comments. good luck and many blessings to jade!

Hi All!! Thanks Laurel for the support and feedback!!! I sure wish they had pix for this week!! Did you get a chance to ask your's and Michael's family about the blood drive?? I know for me, being there tomorrow and donating blood and knowing that Jade and all of Alfa-181 will be doing the same just makes me feel more connected to her and I don't know....miss her just a tad less..........and I know when they hear about it it will raise their spirits knowing how much we support them!! And they will hear about it!!

Otherwise I will have to donate 68 times tomorrow and I'll never make it to the graduation!!! I have a very physically challenging job and would love to go home tomorrow and just crash on the couch!!! It's Friday tomorrow, start of the weekend but somehow Alfa-181's Company Commander's have gotten in my head and are screaming "GET OFF YOUR BUTT YOU LAZY COUCH POTATO TRYING TO PASS YOURSELF OFF AS A SUPPORTIVE FAMILY MEMBER!!!! NOW DROP AND GIVE ME A PINT OF YOUR BLOOD!!! I WANT YOUR PINT AND I WANT IT NOW!!!" hehehehe..........my imagination just gets ahead of me......... :))
Come on ya'll.........even my youngest who is 16 years old is donating tomorrow!!!
shout it out for ur Coastie!!!!!

Shoshi/DebinTx said...

Laurel,
They have to make arrangements through the travel person at Cape May. I forget what that title is called who does that.......but they are strongly encouraged (otherwise known as ORDERED...hehehe...) to go through this officer. So once they get their orders or assignment, and if it's possible, it can be arranged through them to fly Mike home and then either fly from home to his next assignment or if it's close enough, to drive from his hometown if that's the plan and enough time. That's what Jade is planning on doing if possible. They graduate on Friday and are released after graduation. Their leave starts on Sat. She is trying to arrange a flight back around if not the same flight as her husband and arrive in Texas as early as possible on Saturday. Then depending on where they are assigned...she will either fly there and he will drive...or they'll drive together.
Hope that helps!!!
Don't know where we are staying yet? Will let you know when I do!!!
Stay strong!!!
We will make it!!
They will make it!!!
GO ALFA-181!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:) :) :) :) :))

Hello, my SR is David Patnaude from a city North of Boston. He will be in the reserves when he finished A school. He will be going to Gloucester Mass where there is a big fishing fleet to serve. He will return to finish college in the fall 2009. I will check with my local Red Cross to see what time the blood donations are for tomorrow. Have not made any reservations yet because want to wait until week 5. Hopefully there will be some rooms left when I call! How many people are you all brining to the graduation?

Deborah said...

My son is SR Ricky Pavlik, we are unable to donate blood tomorrow but good for all of you that are. I made reservations at Congress Hall beautiful place about a mile and half from base. Not to costly think it was @117 a night for 2 beds. Hope we get there early to view the town (Ricky and I visited Cape May about 8 years ago what a quaint, historic, little town) but it doesn't look like we will be there early we have to wait until his brother's get out school. Then we will be driving 3 hours up there.

Shoshi,
im going to make flight arrangements tomorrow for just myself, then send the info to my husband and he can work with his SATO travel agent to hopefully get on the same flight as me. Does that sound like the right decision? tomorrow im going with my sister in law to give blood! thanks again for the great idea

Deborah,
I'll keep your son Ricky in my prayers. Best of luck to him.

Patricia,
Hello Boston! Greetings from Texas. Hope all is well with David. I'll be sure to keep him in my prayers.

Hi, I am so glad to have found this. My son is in Alpha-181. He is; SR Charles DiMaria from Port St. John, FL (near Cape Canaveral).
My husband retired after 20 years in the Coast Guard 4 years ago, so we know a bit of what is going on. This is great to have, we had nothing but snail mail. The Coast Guard is a tight family, and you meet so many wonderful families. My son will get to come home for four days, then head off to A school to be a cook. I've only received two letters, very brief - but am glad for those. I love the journal, I can't wait for the next one. I will be flying up with my parents for graduation. Hopefully we can get the word to him what flight it will be. I won't book until week 5, just to be safe - you'd be amazed at what they will revert you for, but it sounds like they are an amazing company that is already working well together.

I also received a phone call from my boyfriend tonight! Said he got a 100% on his midterm exam, too. It was so great to hear his voice, especially on Valentine's Day! Sounded like they were doing very well down there. So proud of Alfa-181!

Unknown said...

My SR David Patnaude A181 was one of the recruits to score 100 on his midterm also. It was Hannah he called and I am happy he did since it was Valentines Day! What a nice surprise for her! Sounds like A181 is doing well. Looking forward to another phone call soon to hear more of how he is doing.

flywatt said...

Hello everybody. I look foward to meeting you at Alfa 181's graduation. We should be recieving phone calls and more frequent letters during these final weeks of bootcamp. In the last few weeks, the recruits will find they've learned many shortcuts and working together will buy them more time. In order to fill this extra time, the company commanders allow the recruits to write letters, shine boots, and if they're lucky, make phone calls. I've recieved about 3 letters from my brother, and it seems the company came together rather quickly and is acting as one. We will also be learning soon where our loved ones will be stationed. This can be nerve-racking for the recruits. Some may get where they want to go, and some may be disappointed. It's important that we encourage and support them, help them realize that their first station will be short (approx 1 year), before they are off to A-School to learn their specialty rate. See you in Cape May! Happy to answer and questions you may have.

flywatt,
im curious about your comment regarding stations. as i understand it, recruits first get sent to A-school prior to being stationed. My husband is scheduled to report to A-school in California on April 27th, but i have yet to hear where we will be stationed. His recruiter told me that we should know by june or july of this year. Perhaps i am mistaken. could you clarify things for me? Also, good luck to your brother. I am so proud of Alfa-181 and know that my husband wouldnt be doing so well if not for the support he receives from his fellow recruits.

charndeb said...

Hi Laurel, my husband retired from the Coast Guard and he went to a ship first to wait until the A school was available (a little over a year), and then was re-assigned after A school. My son enlisted with a food certification, he will be going straight to FS A school in Petaluma because that is the deal he made with the recruiter. Because FS (Food Service Specialist) is a shorter school (I think 12 weeks) anyone getting into that critical rate will normally get their name on a list and go when their name is up. Some schools only happen once a year, some schools are much longer. There are some rates that wait years til there are enough people to provide the training - it just depends.
I hope I was able to help answer your question
~Debbie

flywatt said...

Hi Laurel,
Chanrdeb summarized it up pretty well. Critical rates take recruits straight to A-school from bootcamp. However, this must be established on contract before the recruit goes to bootcamp through the recruiter. Sounds like your husband has the guarenteed A-School set up already. If his A-School is in California, you will be going to Petaluma, CA. Lots of wine country down there, and about an hour from San Fransicso. There's plenty to do! Near completion of A-School, the students will be given a list of avaliable units. The students will list thier top picks, and submit them to the instructor who will slot them into the unit. I hope this answers your question!

This blog wasn't avaliable when I went through boot-camp 5 years ago. Seems like this would be a good oportunity to set up a dinner at one of the local resturaunts in Cape May the evening before the graduation ceremony.

Thursday night Families of A-181 Meet n' Greet. Anybody interested? If I get enough replies, I'll look into resturaunt reservations. Email me with the number in your party. I'll keep you all updated with resturaunt and plans via email. flywatt@gmail.com

Im sure everyone else will be interested too. as for my mom and me, we will be getting into Jersey about 7 or so thursday, march 12. so, if we can make a dinner date around them, count us in!

I had a greeting card returned unopened. It had a USPO returned mail stamp marked "unable to forward". The mailing address was blacked out except for the recruits' name and company which was blank because I didn't know it yet. Does anyone know if greeting cards are allowed? Also, if I copy a picture onto a piece of paper and use it as the letter will they allow the picture. Someone said pictures of family are allowed.??

mari said...

Card should be allowed. I have sent at least 5 "funny" cards and 1 valentine card. I know my family also sent a few greeting cards as well, and that was over a span of a few weeks, nothing has come back returned. Not sure about the pictures. My boyfriend said in one of his letters no pictures...although in one of his other letters he said I could scan in a picture on plain paper and send it, so on that I am no so sure...

Hello Everyone,

Meet and greet dinner will be on March 12 (Thursday) at The Ugly Mug in Cape May, NJ at 7:00 pm. I've been to the resturaunt before, reasonably priced and it has a traditional bar and grill kind of feel to it. So far, I've got 12 people on the list of attendees. Once again, if your interested in attending, email me with the number in your party at flywatt@gmail.com. Hopefully I can reserve a section of tables for everybody. Look foward to seeing you all in Cape May.

Anyone in my family will laugh at the name and have no doubt who this is. :)
From what I have read here you can not send pictures? Glad I saw that or would have included those in his letter. LOL heck I have to rewrite it as some of the letter refers back to the pictures.
I am heartbroken that I will not be able to make his grad. next month :( can not get the time off work. We are real short handed right now.

3x5 photos should be allowed. Photos can be taken away from the recruits if they are inappropriate. When pictures are recieved, they can only be viewed during certain times. If the recruit is caught with photos during unauthorized times, will probably be taken away.

Flywatt

Couple of questions for you

What time are calls generally made home when they start to call home?

Is everyone allowed to call or do that have to earn calls?

Is there a list of names of graduates in the company (making a quilt for my son would like to add all the names of the guardians) and should I put SR or Seaman before each name?

We would love to meet all of you at the meet and greet on Thursday but we are picking up my son's girlfriend at 4 @ BWI then off to Jersey how long will you be there and is it an adult atmosphere. We have children we don't have to bring them though they are 14 and 12. We should be arriving and settled by 8 I hope. Sorry so many questiions.....

flywatt said...

What time are calls generally made home when they start to call home?
- Calls are generally made in the evening, anywhere from 8-10 pm.

Is everyone allowed to call or do that have to earn calls?
- Everyone should be allowed to make calls, unless they've lost their privledges as punishment. Keep in mind, recruits are also encouraged to use some of their call time to gather info about their next stations.

Is there a list of names of graduates in the company (making a quilt for my son would like to add all the names of the guardians) and should I put SR or Seaman before each name?
- I'm not aware of any published list of recruits. However, if you are able to find one, I would probably go with names only (without the SR, SA, or SN). Some graduates may be a Seaman Apprentice or a Seaman after graduation, depending on their contracts established by the recruiter.

The resturaunt is a family oriented place. I imagine the gathering will last a few hours. I'm sure everyone is going to want to be well rested for the graduation ceremony! Cape May is a slow moving place during the winter. It thrives in the summer, but is pretty quiet in the off-season.

Laurel - I'll add you to the list. Thanks! Shoot me an email so I can email you updates.

Hello All! Sorry to be so late to enter the conversation, but I just found this page. My son is in A-181SR Michael Sisti from Buffalo, NY. I've received a few letters and a post card, which go everywhere with me. Can you tell I'm proud of him? Many of you sound as though you have a military background or you've been through this before. But, this is my first time. All of my son's communications have been very positive which is such a relief for me, and he sounds very proud to be a member of A-181. I'm sure all of your sons and daughters have played an integral role in their development as a team and I look forward to meeting you on Thursday night, along with my 2 daughters flying in from San Diego, CA. and their dad, also coming from Buffalo. Take care and kudos to A-181!! Linda

flywatt,
got another question for ya. i was reviewing my flight times and realized i will be flying into Philidelphia at 5pm, march 12, meaning i dont think i will have enough time to get my bags, get my rental car, drive 2 hours to NJ and make it to dinner by 7pm. would it be possible(if everyone is alright with it) to push dinner back by 30 minutes? If not, my mom and i will most likely make it by 8ish. will you all still be there?

flywatt said...

I imagine people will still be around at the meet and greet when you arrive. The dinner isn't catered or anything like that. Dont want to make it too late, got an early and exciting day on Friday.

Deborah,

Victoria mentioned they get their orders today for where they will be stationed, but I'm not sure if they will be calling today. Also, she mentioned that they should find out Friday if they are graduating as seaman or fireman.

Deborah said...

Thanks OC. My son already has his orders to go to A school for FS in Petaluma. He is to spend 16 weeks out there until school starts the first week of April for him. He was a culinary student at JWU, Charlotte.

BTW, we had a total of 69 people donate blood on Friday!!! YEA!!! WE SUPPORTED OUR ALFA-181'S AWESOMELY!!!! Gonna try to post some pictures soon of the blood drive here in Texas..it was so kewl to know that that very same day, all 64 SR's and their commanders had done the same thing!! I'm sorry, I've never stayed at that hotel. I've only been to Cape May for bootcamp, and I really dont know which hotels to recommend. My parents stayed at a Bed and Breakfast, they enjoyed it very much. But the same place they stayed is closed for the off-season.

Hi everyone,
I got a phone call today from our son. He is doing fine. Said they got their orders today. He will be in Gloucester MA after A school. It was a quick call. We booked our rooms for graduation. Hopefully we will see some pictures again next week. Anxiously awaiting the graduation and getting to see our son.

flywatt said...

Gloucester? Nice. Are you all from the New England area? I was born and raised in Texas, and I'm stationed in Connecticut. I absolutly love it out here, he should look foward to it! Theres loads of stuff to do! Lots of history in this area.

Shenvalley said...

Our son is James Anderson of Staunton,VA. At 27, he might be the "Old Man" of the company.

The notes he sends are upbeat, and we got a quick call yesterday.

Does anyone know when we will see firm graduation dates for our recruits? There's always the possibility of being held back, and I'd hate to make travel and time off from work plans that are wrong.

flywatt said...

Most recruits that have made it this far and have passed their physical fitness assessment should be in good shape to graduate. They would have to slip up pretty significantly to get held back.

I called a hotel in Cape May, and they suggested to wait until a few days before the graduation to book a room. The informed me rooms should be readily avaliable during this season (slow season).

I booked plane tickets last week for my family. If worse comes to worse, we will have to pay the re-booking fee ($115 with delta airlines), plus the price difference in the plane ticket.

Hope this helps. Anybody else hear from their loved ones on where they are getting stationed?

OCMom said...

Got my call Saturday morning. Elizabeth City, NC. I am so excited. She is graduating as Fireman and working in law enforcement at a small boat station. I think this will be a perfect fit for her. I also got the letter with a note about graduation on Saturday. Hope it will be inside. Does anyone know what month they start holding the graduation outside?

flywatt said...

I'm not sure, but the outside graduations are breathtaking ceremonies. Other companies form and march onto the field, they render honors, all kinds of cool stuff, lots of fun to watch. The indoor ceremony is just the graduating company, I believe. Its fun to watch the companies march. I'm rootin for an outdoor ceremony! :)

Unknown said...

Hi flywatt,
Yes we are from the area, Gloucester is about 20 minutes from home. He was guaranted it when he signed up. Our other son graduated from Maine Maritime Academy and is a tug boat captain working in New York. They both love the water and hope to start a fishing charter business. We made our arrangement to stay at Le Mere Motor Inn. It is about a 1/4 mile from the base. Price was good and we have AAA so we got a discount. If for any reason graduation is postponed they won't refund the money but will put it towards a future date.

jorobby said...

So glad to see all the information in this blogsite. My husband and I just found it. Our son is Jason Ensor from Naples, Florida. We are from the tropical part of the U.S. so we are looking forward to an outdoor graduation ceremony in NJ which I am sure is gorgeous. We were also getting letters asking why we weren't writing, but this Sat finally got a letter that said he got the first package we sent with all kinds of items that I didn't know he wasn't allowed to receive, but he said thanks for sending the package and the pictures. Hmm?! Anyway we are so proud of him - I get teary eyed when I read his letters about his company and team and when I read these blog entries that you guys are sending. gotta few questions concerning on base liberty. as i understand it, liberty has already begun. what do they get to do the entire week? since its called on base liberty, i assume they must remain on base the entire time? how do the phone calls work. i wonder, do they have the right to call whenever they want? my husband told me he would call me back this coming saturday so i guess calls any other time this week arent permitted. also you mentioned the graduation possibly taking place outside. i could have sworn that outside ceremonies arent held until may or so. maybe im wrong on that one. it would be wonderful if it were possible to attend an outside graduation.

my husband gave me a list of his friends names. does anyone know these recruits: Valverde
Cory
Sisti
McNash

Shoshi- You're welcome ;) I always preach, the 378' High Endurance Cutters are the way to go! She's lucky! She'll have oportunities that no other boat class in the CG can offer! I was fortunate enough to circumnavigate the WORLD on the CGC Midgett. Amazing boats.

Laurel- In the Military, liberty refers to "time off". While in recruit training, trainees get 2 liberty days. Week 6 Saturday, and week 7 Saturday. Week 6 Saturday is on base liberty, week 7 is off base liberty.

I must apologize, I was a week ahead of myself when I said "we should be expecting calls this friday/saturday". This upcoming Saturday will be week 6 "on base liberty", the recruits should be able to make phone calls during this time.

flywatt said...

Laurel,

Second look at your post, I didn't answer all your questions. Liberty is only granted twice during the entire boot-camp experience (as mentioned in my last post). If the company is well organized, and there is time, the CC's may grant the company "phone time" in the evenings. Keep in mind, phone is a privledge in boot camp. Privledges can be lost for missing a whisker while shaving. . . (learned that one from experience).

As for the graduation ceremony, I'm not sure where it will be held. Like I said, I hope outdoors! The outdoor ceremonies are much more brilliant. I marched in 2 outdoor ceremonies, but my actual graduation ceremony was indoors because RAIN put a damper on it. So the ceremonies are subject to weather. . . If the weather is nice, I imagine the ceremony will be outdoors. Ultimately, its up to the command on the day of graduation.

Mcnash,

I did get an email from a parent who said their kid is going to a Polar Ice Breaker in Seattle. I was stationed in Seattle for 3 years. The base is in the heart of downtown, across the street from the Mariners and Seahawks fields... If he is single, he will probably live on the cutter. Not bad for a first unit! Remember the name of the cutter?

Okay, Flywatt, since you seem to be up to date on all the Coastie lingo, my grandson is one of those "jacked up echo ones", is it a good thing or a bad thing? Since I'm the optomist in the family, I'm sure it's good however, his grandfather is worried it may be a bad thing. HELP!

Unknown said...

"Jacked up echo ones" refers to their rank , E-1, and jacked up refers to poor behavior.

They hear this a lot, especially from their company commanders when they first arrive in boot camp.

At this point in their training, as they've already made it really far and are almost finished, this phrase is probably used more as comic relief than anything.

I don't think you have anything to be concerned about, "Jacked up" is a phrase they'll hear probably for the rest of their Coast Guard career, and for the most part, they'll use and hear it in a joking manner.

I hope this helps clear things up for you a bit, and like I said before, it probably isn't anything to worry about!

Also , I forgot to mention.. In Coast Guard boot camp, you can be the perfect recruit who never makes any mistakes, and they will STILL refer to you as a "jacked up echo one". Sort of a motivational tactic I suppose

Flywatt need a answer to a question regarding graduation. Our son's grandfather is a retired firefighter. Can he present the diploma (or whatever they get) at graduation if he has a uniform? Thanks

Patty can of worms!

flywatt said...

Patricia,

Honestly, I'm not sure about that. I'll see what I can figure out. I'm pretty sure we should be getting phone calls this Saturday. The recruits get on-base liberty. Might be a good oportunity to ask them.

Mina,

Justin pretty much nailed it. I wouldn't sweat it.

Hi. My son, SR Mike Sisti, is supposed to go on the CG Cutter Active which I believe is out of Seattle. But, with him being held back a week, I'm not sure if this effects his assignment. Flywatt?

flywatt said...

Not sure, sorry!

RI_Mom said...

Hi all, I'll jump in & say hello. My son wrote & said they've gained 5 recruits reverted from other companues to Alpha 181, so the total is more than 64. Hope that quilt has extra squares! Anyone being assigned in New England? My son will be reporting to the TYBEE, stationed at Wood's Hole, Mass.

Unknown said...

Linda, being held back a week will not affect his assignment. He'll still go to Cutter Active.

flywatt said...

CGC Active is in Port Angeles, WA. Thats a ways from Seattle. Few hours, maybe?

Thank you.

Got an email about the Star Inn (someone had asked previously). Rooms are small but nice and clean. There's a good breakfast joint called the Blue Pig Tavern across the street. Enjoy!

if anyone has yet to pick a place to stay, let me suggest the grand Hotel. i got a standard room for 2 at $83 per night. im struggling to stretch every penny right now and felt that the price was just right. hope this helps!

flywatt said...

Grand Hotel is where we're probably staying too. Waiting until a few days before the graduation to book a hotel room though.

Laurel said...

glad to know im not the only one staying at the grand hotel who is going to the training center the morning of the 13th. question: my mapquest directions are incomplete for some reason. do you know what street off of pennsylvania you turn onto before reaching munro street?

Laurel said...

hmmm, i dont know the left-most person in the last picture on the journal could be my husband, but who knows? glad to hear some of the guys are easily recognized by their loved ones, though. they all look great!

mari said...

We are also staying at The Grand!! Looks nice, good price as well. 1 bedroom with 2 beds, 83$ as well.

mari said...

The directions that come up for me in Google maps were, (from the hotel to the base) East on Beach Ave, Left at Pittsburg Ave, then a Right on Pennsylvania Ave. and the base should be on the right. Looking at the map, it looks right. We are getting a map from AAA, as well as using a GPS, so by using 3 forms of directions, I hope we get there!! Also, at the hotel I am sure they will be able to provide ample directions to the base. The base is about 2 miles away from The Grand. I booked our room about a week ago. I was looking into The Congress hotel, and it was all booked for that night, so I did not want to wait any longer!! Where are you coming from Laurel?

flywatt said...

Cape may is pretty small. There's signs to the training center. Shouldn't have any trouble finding it.

Hi all, I am looking forward to graduation, too. I am so proud of Alpha 181!
I am really intrigued about the quilt, Deborah. Can you post a photo when it’s done? I’d love to see it.
I’ve been knitting a lot lately, and there is a site that supports knitting for the various military troops (including U.S. Coast Guard) called the Ships Project. I also found another site that supports quilts, knitting, sewing Christmas stockings, writing letters, and other volunteer efforts called Citizen S.A.M. For anyone who does crafts or wants to help. I’m sure there’s more out there. These are just a few. See links below:

RI Mom,

Sure no problem, but I probably won't have it done until after he graduates because I am adding his graduation pic as the middle square. I have a embroidery machine so I am doing a basic quilt with lots of embroidery, downloaded alot of Coast Guard designs, my father(Navy Vet) says to add as much information as possible from Cape May. I think I am going to add the names of Alpha 181 in the sashings (which is the pieces that hold the blocks together). I am such a procrastinator but hopefully I will have by the time he heads out to A school or at least finishes LOL. Once I get the picture it shouldn't take me that long to put it together. I did quilt however for his girlfriend that he wanted me to do for her that was for Valentine's since he couldn't be with her. Here is the link of that quilt, http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e128/debestpav/IMG_0260-1.jpg Don't know if this will work but well see. Also I completed a towel for him Alpha 181 and the graduation date and his name I will try to post it on here as well again I don't know if it will work. Thanks for those links I will definitely check into them. You can email me though if you want with your email and I will send you the pics of the quilt when they are done. Just put Coast Guard Mom on the subject so I don't accidentally erase it. JUNK MAIL!! Well here is the towel link http://s38.photobucket.com/albums/e128/debestpav/?action=view&current=de3ec892.pbw

My Email address is Debestpav@comcast.net

I like the towel and quilt. The towel reminds me of the "terrible towels" that the Pittsburgh Steelers fans use during the games. A-181 terrible towels! haha.

Deborah said...
