Yankee 180

We’re in week two of training – the recruits have been making some mistakes, but they’re learning quickly. We are tough company commanders, but we’re fair. Our ultimate goal is to get them to graduation and make sure they’re trained Guardians.

They’re getting accustomed to military life style. The hardest thing for recruits is following orders willing and quickly and moving with a sense of urgency/meeting time objectives.

The biggest obstacle coming up in week three is seamanship and watch standing. Recruits will have to wake up one hour a night and stand a security/fire/podium watch.

It’s going to be a tough eight weeks – we’ll see you at graduation on Feb. 27, 2009.

Yankee Company Commanders
Lead:
Chief Petty Officer George Bou
Assistants:
Petty Officer 1st Class Eric Vedder
Petty Officer 1st Class David Wagner
Petty Officer 2nd Class Fred Chase

I don't blame you tammsman, being apart for the 2 months of boot camp is way more than long enough.

Stefanie said...

South Texas huh? I hope you guys get to go somewhere awesome after her A school is done. I agree with you J.R's Girl, 2 months is crappy enough.

Can someone fill me in on what "A" school is? Is it additional training in a specific area? or just a general term for the additional training? We are still waiting for a letter, a call, word from someone else that our son has contacted someone. Thanks for everyone's updates... I wonder if they are all sharing one phone! How ironic, when they all probably have their own cell phone locked up in a closet somewhere! Go Yankees!

J.R.'sGirl said...

I have my fiancé’s cell, he didn't want to risk brining it since it wasn't on the list. 'A' school is for after boot camp, once they have decided on the job they want, it is specific training for that job. Most graduates don't go strait to 'A' school, they go to their first unit. There are a few like Nikki's man and Tammsman's wife who get to go strait to 'A' school after graduation. Eventually every graduate goes to 'A' school at one point.

J.R.'sGirl said...

Also there are 'A' schools all over the U.S. depending on what job they chose, that decides where they have to go.

It's 3:46 in Ca. and we just got a call from our son. It was only about a minute and a half. Sounded very rushed and to the point. Has to talk to his yoeman about travel arrangements home. He'll be stationed in Alameda CA.

J.R.'sGirl said...

yay! more phone calls!!!

PasoJack said...

Have a piece of paper and pen handy for when they call. Write down any guick questions you have and what they say. It all happens so fast.

Leslie said...

We only got to talk maybe a minute, living in Maine we' d love to head to Florida for a visit. Our son took his cell, his recruiter told him he could, they just lock it up until the end.

PasoJack said...

ProudUSGCparents we were in Crestview last Easter to visit my parents and really liked it. My parents live on Bellridge Dr. Do you know that area? I loved Destin. I wonder if our sons have got to know each other? I have so many questions that I can't wait to hear the answers to. Our son will be stationed for now about 4 hours away. Hope you get a call soon.

My husband received a call from our son approximately one hour ago. He spoke very briefly with him. Lot of Yes Sir's...in the conversation! He will be stationed in Wilmington, NC on a Coast Guard Cutter. We are excited because we live in Savannah, GA and can drive to see him when he is in port! Joe said he sounded great, happy and strong!!! Looking forward to seeing everyone at graduation!

Well, we got a call from our son on our answering machine! I wish he would have called my cell phone but at least I got to hear his voice, we are in Oregon and he will be stationed in Portsmouth Virginia on Coast Guard Cutter Tampa... couldn't get much further from home! I really wanted him closer, but this is his dream so I am going to stay positive! I am so proud of him and can't wait until graduation to see him! I hope he will be able to call and actually get ahold of us.

Richmond Hill Real Estate said...

Dear US Coast Guard Mom, We have heard that Portsmouth Virginia is a great place with a lot of supportive military personnel. I'm so sorry your son is so far away. We are about seven hours which sounds like heaven to us at this time. I hope you get to talk to your son soon! I know he misses home as much as our son does!

I'm just curious as to what the first initial of the last name of the people that getting to make phone calls. My husbands last name starts with W and I haven't gotten a call yet so I was thinking that they were going by last names. THANKS!

Stefanie said...

You might be right BDENNING89 because I got a call last night and my husband and I have a G for the last name. Hopefully he will call. I heard sometimes the calls go into Monday. Their company is pretty big, so don't give up!!! :)

Keli said...

Mine and my husbands last name starts with an R and i got a call yesterday

Anonymous said...

Our last name starts with a P and he called yesterday at 3:51pm, I have been hoping he would call back because we were gone and he just left a message on the machine but it's not looking like he will. His last letter said that he might not get the 5 days off after graduation so I wonder if the cutter he will be on will leave sooner than that or why he would say that he might not get it off, if he is leaving before the 5 days we will just take him to where he will be stationed and just hang out there and visit until he leaves but without talking to him it's hard to know what to do....play it by ear I guess.

tammsman said...

our last name starts with an A so that is probably why i was the first one to geta call

J.R.'sGirl said...

His last name starts with an M. I have heard that sometimes they get less than 5 days of leave and sometimes you get more.

Joseph's Wifey said...

Well I got a call saturday and we start with a C!! JR's Girl we are moving to Baltimore Maryland also!! Trust me I know what you mean about the moving I have lived in a 3 mile range my whole life so this is totally new for me!! How do you know he on a cutter??

J.R.'sGirl said...

By the way Santana this is Andria from coastiechicks.net LOL

J.R.'sGirl said...

I don't, I thought that was because I thought he said Curtis May lol, but he's getting stationed at Curtis Bay, Baltimore, MD. Is your husband getting stationed at Curtis Bay also?

It's great to hear from our Yankee's. It would be nice to know why they can't allow at least 5 minutes though! (That is what we were told he would get to make travel arrangements). We would love for our son to be on the same flight with us coming home. Do I go ahead and book it or do I book ours and give him the flight # to see if he can get that same flight? The longer we wait the more it goes up. Any ideas or comments?

PasoJack said...

I found another informative site you all might be interested in for now and as long as you are in the Coast guard family. Here it is www.uscg.org Select bootcamp or family forum. We are getting closer to graduation. Looking forward to the journal on Tuesday, maybe they will post it early again :)

I read on the www.uscg.com website it says that they recommend that you book you flight and send your flight info to your loved one. Which is what I did, for that very reason of the prices going up and i wanted to make sure I got a flight. They said that the recruits can work with the SATO travel agent who is on site at boot camp to try and get the same flight as you.

Nikki said...

Well, I haven't gotten a call yet and his last name starts with a C so i dont know how they're doing it. I really hope i get a call soon though!!!

We finally got the 45 second phone call last night. My son's dad(who lives in Maine) called me around 9pm to say that our son(SR Walls) had just called. He told his dad to just listen because he only had 45 seconds !!! Said he was going to Toledo Ohio and would probably call later in the week, or weekend, when he could talk longer. We are hoping they can call so we will also get to talk with him (we live in Florida). Anyway...his dad said he sounded good and is doing OK :) Wish I could have heard his voice but my time will come :) We are just thankful he, and Yankee 180, is doing so well !!! We can't wait to see them all at graduation. Hopefully we will get to meet some of you also. We are flying into Philly on Wednesday and are staying at the La Mer. Thanks everyone for your "updates". These blogs, along with the journals and pictures, have sure made it a little easier to keep up on things.
Yankee 180 you're on the home stretch :) God bless you all

Yes if you read up on it they say they book their own flights thru the Coast Guard, you should provide ASAP your flight info and they will try for the same, no guarantee, but you are not supposed to buy it for them, tempting though.....

Richmond Hill Real Estate said...

We booked our flights a couple of weeks ago and sent copies of our flight arrangements to our son in two separate letters to be sure the letters would not get lost.
We did not book our son's flight.

This week I sent a form letter with
blanks for my son to fill in
such as should we begin to find him a place for him to stay in Wilmington or is there a military base/barracks where he will have to stay while he is not on the cutter? If anyone has information to share relating to duty aboard a cutter and living accommodations, please do so. Kindest Regards,

ProudUSCGParents, our son is also going to Portsmouth Virginia but he will be on cutter Tampa, he wrote in his last letter that he might not get the 5 days off so I am wondering if they need them sooner, it might be different since your son is on a different cutter... We are thinking about just driving him to Virginia after graduation and spending his 5 days off there with him if he does infact get 5 days off, I hate to book a flight home and find out that he can't come with us. Also thanks for the info. on housing there, that's good to know.... We are getting closer! Still counting down the days to graduation! It seems like it's been forever since I have seen him! I can't wait!!!

Not to much longer before we will see our love ones!!

As soon as the graduation ceremony is over they gather there personal items and are free to leave. For the recruits who don't have a ride to the airport, a bus picks them up at 1:00 and brings them there.

We got a graduation invitation in the mail today. Informal copy but it brings us closer to knowing graduation is near. We also got a letter! Apparently he is the Iron King in return for his boots getting shined. Says they have grown very close in the secondary squad. He said the weather has been nice on Fridays and hopes the trend continues for graduation day.

I GOT A CALL!!! And I didn't even miss this one, he just called to find out travel arrangements and said that he didn't have long but if they don't get liberty taken away then they should be able to call this weekend. He also said that he did have to have all four wisdom teeth pulled and did get his marksman at the shooting range. I added call forwarding to my home phone so I don't miss another call! Thanks for that idea ProudUSCGParents, I hadn't even thought of that. Over 300 posts on here for Yankee, we must be the most supportive family in the USCG! 15 days and counting! I am wondering when Y-180 will receive their first flag for their pole, sorry don't remember the correct terms. It sounds like getting them is a big deal. Looking forward to meeting all of you in person!

Thanks to all you blog writers. Its good to know that I am not the only ones with the questions and going crazy waiting for a letter or phone call. My son used his one call to let us know he was getting stationed in Hawaii to call his girlfriend and she called us, but he did call this morning to get our flight arrangements so it was great to get to hear his voice and to find out he gets to come home for a few days. Does anyone have any info on the Hawaii station? Like what island is it on... we don't even know yet if he is station there or on a cutter out of there. We will use the call forwarding idea on Saturday as well. Thanks for the idea.

That's a great idea. I wonder if they will get a military email address? The graduation letter we got yesterday said the newly minted Guardian is free to depart on five days of well-deserved leave before reporting to their new duty station. There will also be a professional produced video of the graduation made for purchase. We are also allowed with our Guardian's to shop at the store, maybe find some cool Coast Guard stuff.
